The objectives of these studies were to identify associations between udder half defects (hard or lump) and bacteria isolated from milk or mammary tissue swabs, to compare with samples from normal udder halves at different physiological time points and to compare bacterial species isolated via milk and swabs of mammary tissue from within the same udder halves. A total of 1054 samples were aseptically collected from each udder half of 199 non-dairy breed (Romney) ewes from three different studies (Study A, = 77; Study B, = 74; and Study C, = 48). Conventional bacterial culture and MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry were used for bacterial identification.

There has been a recent upsurge in human cases of leptospirosis in New Zealand, with wildlife a suspected emerging source, but up-to-date knowledge on this topic is lacking. We conducted a cross-sectional study in two farm environments to estimate Leptospira seroprevalence in wildlife and sympatric livestock, PCR/culture prevalence in wildlife, and compare seroprevalence and prevalence between species, sex, and age groups. Traps targeting house mice (Mus musculus), black rats (Rattus rattus), hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) and brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) were set for 10 trap-nights in March-April 2017 on a dairy (A) and a beef and sheep (B) farm.

A total of 1039 non-dairy breed (Romney) ewes were enrolled in two studies to assess the changes in udder half defect status (hard, lump, or normal) over time and to predict the risk of future udder half defect occurrence. In the first study (study A), udder halves of 991 ewes were assessed utilizing a standardized udder palpation method and scored four times a year, for two successive years (pre-mating, pre-lambing, docking, and weaning). The second study (study B) assessed the udder halves at pre-mating, and at six weekly intervals in the first six weeks of lactation in 46 ewes that had defective and normal udder halves.

Aims: To evaluate the proportions of canine mammary gland lesions submitted to a New Zealand diagnostic laboratory, that were neoplastic non-neoplastic and, among neoplasms, malignant benign, and to determine whether age, reproductive status or breed of dog, or size of the mammary mass were associated with the histological diagnosis.

Methods: Canine mammary gland biopsies submitted between the start of 2012 and the end of 2016 were selected from the surgical biopsy database of IDEXX Laboratories, NZ. For each case, details on age, breed, and reproductive status of the patient were registered as reported by the submitting veterinarians, along with the size (classified as small, medium or large) of the lesion and the histological diagnosis reported by the pathologists.

In New Zealand (NZ), leptospirosis is a mostly occupational zoonosis, with >66% of the recently notified cases being farm or abattoir workers. Livestock species independently maintain serovar Hardjo and serovar Pomona, and both are included in livestock vaccines. The increasing importance in human cases of Ballum, a serovar associated with wildlife, suggests that wildlife may be an overlooked source of infection.

In non-dairy ewes, udder defects hinder the survival and weight gain of their pre-weaned lambs. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of palpable udder defects on milk yield, somatic cell count (SCC), and milk composition in non-dairy Romney ewes. Ewes with a history of udder defects or normal udders were selected for the study.

Aberrant expression of immune check point molecules, programmed death ligand (PD-L1) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) has been reported in many human cancers with increased protein and gene expression correlated with an aggressive behaviour in some neoplasms. Additionally, PD-L1 blockade has been shown to be an effective therapy for some human cancers. Canine mammary gland tumours have previously been shown to produce PD-L1 protein, but there are no previous studies investigating CTLA-4 in these common canine neoplasms.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate liver changes in sheep 8 months after exposure to sporidesmin, focusing on gross and histological alterations and their correlation with serum gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) levels.
  • Fifty Romney ewes were exposed to sporidesmin while grazing, with some showing photosensitization; liver conditions were assessed after they were slaughtered 8 months later.
  • Results showed high serum GGT levels, with most sheep exhibiting liver shape changes and significant fibrosis and biliary hyperplasia, especially in the left lobe, indicating a clear link between the initial GGT activity and later liver damage.

Chemokines are signaling proteins secreted by immune cells which regulate leukocyte trafficking. The aberrant expression of chemokines and their receptors by neoplastic cells influences the behaviour of many human cancers. This study evaluated gene-expression of the chemokines: CCL5, CXCL10, CXCL12 and the chemokine receptors: CXCR3, CXCR4, CXCR7, CCR4, CCR9 in 41 histologically-malignant, outcome-known, canine mammary tumours.

Endometritis, diagnosed either by assessing the proportion of nucleated cells that are neutrophils (PMN%) following cytology of the endometrium or by assessing the degree of purulent material within the vagina (purulent vaginal discharge or PVD score), is prevalent among dairy cows. However, limited data exist as to the degree of variation among herds in the prevalence of endometritis diagnosed by these 2 methods. Thus, we undertook a study involving uterine cytological and vaginal sampling at a median of 41 d in milk of 1,807 cows from 100 seasonally breeding dairy herds in New Zealand.

Tumour histological classification and grade are frequently used to predict the prognosis of canine mammary gland tumours. While these techniques provide some information about tumour behaviour, it is currently difficult to predict which tumours will metastasize. Mast cell density has been shown to predict metastasis in human breast cancer.

Feline panleukopenia (FPL), a frequently fatal disease of cats, is caused by feline parvovirus (FPV) or canine parvovirus (CPV). We investigated simultaneous outbreaks of FPL between 2014 and 2018 in Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where FPL outbreaks had not been reported for several decades. Case data from 989 cats and clinical samples from additional 113 cats were obtained to determine the cause of the outbreaks and epidemiological factors involved.

Papillomaviruses (PVs) cause around 5% of all human cancers, including most cervical cancers and around a quarter of all oral cancers. Additionally, some studies have suggested that PVs could cause a proportion of human lung, breast, and bladder cancers. As PVs have been associated with skin cancer in cats and, more rarely, dogs, it was hypothesized that these viruses could also contribute to epithelial cancers of the lung, mammary gland, and bladder of dogs and cats.

Although oral squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are common in cats there are currently few prognostic markers for these cancers. This study used 52 feline oral SCCs to determine if prognosis can be predicted by the age or sex of the cat, the presence of bone within the diagnostic sample, or the anatomic location of the SCC. Additionally, as p16 protein (p16) and p53 are prognostic for human oral SCCs, p16 and p53 immunostaining was evaluated.
