The experiences of oppression among transgender and gender expansive young people in Australia: An interpretative phenomenological study.

Transgender and gender expansive (TGE) people experience poorer mental health outcomes compared to their cisgender counterparts. There is limited research on understanding the experiences of TGE school-aged young people from an Australian perspective. Since each country and state has different cultures, laws, and access to gender-affirming care research considering these differences is imperative.

Longitudinal study evaluating post-ICU syndrome differences between acute care surgery and trauma SICU survivors.

Background: Post-intensive care unit (ICU) syndrome (PICS) occurs at an exorbitant rate in surgical ICU (SICU) survivors. It remains unknown if critical illness due to trauma versus acute care surgery (ACS) may represent different pathophysiologic entities. In this longitudinal study, we determined if admission criteria in a cohort of trauma and ACS patients were associated with differences in the occurrence of PICS.

The effect of phenytoin on embryonic heart rate in Vivo.

Phenytoin is a known human teratogen with unknown etiology. Several mechanisms have been proposed including disturbances in folate metabolism, induction of embryonic hypoxia following phenytoin-induced bradycardia, free radical formation following re-oxygenation and phenytoin-induced maternal hyperglycemia. Using high frequency ultrasound, we demonstrated that phenytoin induced a dramatic decrease in the heart rate of embryos.

Efficacy of manipulation under anesthesia beyond three months following total knee arthroplasty.

Background: Stiffness after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is often treated with manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) to improve range of motion (ROM). However, many authors recommend against MUA beyond 3 months after TKA. This study investigates the timing of MUA for stiffness after TKA, focusing on MUA performed at >12 weeks.

Assisted ultrasound applications for the production of safe foods.

Ultrasound requires high power and longer treatment times to inactivate micro-organisms when compared to ultrasound combined with other technologies. Previous reports have shown that the effectiveness of ultrasound as a decontamination technology can be increased by combining it with another treatment such as pressure, heat and antimicrobial solutions. Assisted ultrasound, the combination of ultrasound with another technology, is more energy efficient, and it has less impact on the food properties.

The effect of drugs with ion channel-blocking activity on the early embryonic rat heart.

This study investigated the effects of a range of pharmaceutical drugs with ion channel-blocking activity on the heart of gestation day 13 rat embryos in vitro. The general hypothesis was that the blockade of the I(Kr)/hERG channel, that is highly important for the normal functioning of the embryonic rat heart, would cause bradycardia and arrhythmia. Concomitant blockade of other channels was expected to modify the effects of hERG blockade.

The effect of hypoxia in development.

There is increasing evidence that the oxygen supply to the human embryo in the first trimester is tightly controlled, suggesting that too much oxygen may interfere with development. The use of hypoxia probes in mammalian embryos during the organogenic period indicates that the embryo is normally in a state of partial hypoxia, and this may be essential to control cardiovascular development, perhaps under the control of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF). A consequence of this state of partial hypoxia is that disturbances in the oxygen supply can more easily lead to a damaging degree of hypoxia.

Distinct spatial patterns of brain activity associated with memory storage and search.

The time it takes for a human participant to decide whether a given stimulus is an element of a remembered set increases approximately linearly with the number of elements in the set. Here we tested for and detected a spatial pattern of brain activity whose magnitude of expression during this memory search process correlates with set size. We then tested the idea that memory search simply involves a re-activation of neurons involved in remembering the set by statistically comparing the patterns of brain activity corresponding to memory search and set size dependent working memory maintenance.

Age-related changes in brain activation during a delayed item recognition task.

To test competing models of age-related changes in brain functioning (capacity limitation, neural efficiency, compensatory reorganization, and dedifferentiation), young (n=40; mean age=25.1 years) and elderly (n=18; mean age=74.4 years) subjects performed a delayed item recognition task for visually presented letters with three set sizes (1, 3, or 6 letters) while being scanned with BOLD fMRI.

The relationship between cleft lip, maxillary hypoplasia, hypoxia and phenytoin.

Cleft lip (CL) is a common malformation that has both genetic and exogenous causes. The main pharmaceutical cause is exposure to phenytoin during early facial development in the 5th to 6th weeks of gestation. Phenytoin also causes CL if administered to pregnant rats during the period of early facial development.

Behavioural effects of parafascicular thalamic lesions in an animal model of parkinsonism.

We recently reported that the centromedian-parafascicular thalamic complex (CM-Pf) degenerates in Parkinson's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy. The contribution of such thalamic pathology to disease symptoms has not yet been established. The present study therefore investigated the behavioural impact of lesioning the corresponding thalamic region (termed Pf) on a range of behaviours present in rodents.

Maternal antioxidant supplementation does not reduce the incidence of phenytoin-induced cleft lip and related malformations in rats.

There is considerable evidence that phenytoin-induced birth defects in the rat are a consequence of a period of bradycardia and hypoxia in the embryos. Experiments were designed to test the hypothesis that phenytoin-induced birth defects result from free-radical damage to the embryos during the reoxygenation period posthypoxia. Female rats (>9 per group) were fed either a control diet or a diet high in antioxidants (vitamins C and E and coenzyme Q(10)) both before and during pregnancy and were then given a teratogenic dose of phenytoin (180 mg/kg) on GD 11.

Positive evidence against human hippocampal involvement in working memory maintenance of familiar stimuli.

Subjects (n = 40) performed a delayed item recognition task for visually presented letters with three set sizes (1, 3 or 6 letters). Accuracy was close to ceiling at all set sizes, so we took set size as a proxy for WM load (i.e.
