Catalytic Scanning Probe Nanolithography (cSPL): Control of the AFM Parameters in Order to Achieve Sub-100-nm Spatially Resolved Epoxidation of Alkenes Grafted onto a Surface.

Scanning probe lithography (SPL) appears to be a reliable alternative to the use of masks in traditional lithography techniques as it offers the possibility of directly producing specific chemical functionalities with nanoscale spatial control. We have recently extend the range of applications of catalytic SPL (cSPL) by introducing a homogeneous catalyst immobilized on the apex of a scanning probe. Here we investigate the importance of atomic force microscopy (AFM) physical parameters (applied force, writing speed, and interline distance) on the resultant chemical activity in this cSPL methodology through the direct topographic observation of nanostructured surfaces.

Purpose: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is characterized by a strong heterogeneity with regard to tumour biology as well as in the clinical course of the disease. Effects of Lumbosacral Manipulation on Isokinetic Strength of the Knee Extensors and Flexors in Healthy Subjects: A Randomized, Controlled, Single-Blind Crossover Trial.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of manual manipulations targeting the lumbar spine and/or sacroiliac joint on concentric knee extension and flexion forces. Torque production was measured during isometric and isokinetic contractions.

Methods: This was a randomized, controlled, single-blind crossover design with 21 asymptomatic, college-aged subjects who had never received spinal manipulation.

Hypercoagulant Abdominal Swabs in Cardiac Surgery: Potential Problems and Background.

 During cardiac surgery with heart-lung-machine support, abdominal swabs are routinely used to adsorb blood from the operation field. In part, abdominal swabs exhibit procoagulant activity, which is usually considered harmless. However, coagulation induction and abnormal clot formation on the surface of abdominal swabs in the operation field may, if the blood is retransfused into the extracorporeal circuit, lead to severe thromboembolic complications.

With this special setup, a two-dimensional fluid can be realized experimentally. The physics of the system involves a complex interplay of thermal convection and interface and gravitational forces.

Mitral stenosis and hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy: An unusual combination.

Objective: Systolic anterior motion of mitral valve (MV) leaflets is a main pathophysiologic feature of left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Thus, restricted leaflet motion that occurs with MV stenosis might be expected to minimize outflow tract obstruction related to systolic anterior motion.

Methods: From January 1993 through February 2015, we performed MV replacement and septal myectomy in 12 patients with mitral stenosis and hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy at Mayo Clinic Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Introduction: High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an ablative treatment undergoing assessment for the treatment of benign and malignant disease. We describe the first reported intracavitary HIFU ablation for recurrent, unresectable and symptomatic cervical cancer.

Case Description: A 38 year old woman receiving palliative chemotherapy for metastatic cervical adenocarcinoma was offered ablative treatment from an intracavitary trans-rectal HIFU device (Sonablate® 500).

Introduction: Cerebral palsy (CP) is associated with reduced muscle volumes, but previous studies have reported deficits in only a small number of muscles. The extent of volume deficits across lower limb muscles is not known. This study presents an imaging-based assessment of muscle volume and length deficits in 35 lower limb muscles.

Managing the risk of noncardiac surgery in patients with aortic stenosis is a problem that is frequently confronted in clinical practice. Traditionally, patients with severe aortic stenosis were considered to be at substantial risk during noncardiac surgery, and as such, elective procedures were avoided before intervention on the aortic valve in most patients other than those who were ineligible or refused aortic valve replacement. Recent data suggest that with contemporary anesthesia and surgical techniques, the risk of noncardiac surgery is substantially lower than previously believed.

Evidence for the effectiveness of a national school-based mental health program in Chile.

Objective: Skills for Life (SFL) is the largest school-based mental health program in the world, screening and providing services to more than 1,000,000 students in Chile over the past decade. This is the first external evaluation of the program.

Method: Of the 8,372 primary schools in Chile in 2010 that received public funding, one-fifth (1,637) elected to participate in SFL.
