There is a paucity of information on neonatal behaviour of tropical livestock species despite its adaptive value. One hundred and ninety West African Dwarf (WAD) kids and their mothers were studied to establish the influence of neonatal and maternal factors on neonatal behaviour. Environmental temperatures and relative humidity (RH) at birth were also recorded.

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) have been widely used by young people to enhance performance and increase muscle mass. The use of AAS can affect the kidneys and lead to a myriad of presentations, ranging from mildly elevated serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen to irreversible chronic kidney disease and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). To the best of our knowledge, the coexistence of interstitial nephritis and the cellular variant of FSGS [Immunoglobulin M (IgM)] secondary to AAS abuse has not been previously reported in the literature.

Introduction: PD catheter tip migration is a common complication and a significant cause of catheter malfunction. Background: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in the setting of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has important prognostic and therapeutic consequences. We estimated the prevalence of PAH among patients with ESRD treated with automated peritoneal dialysis (APD), investigated the effect of different variables and compared pulmonary artery pressure and cardiac function at the beginning and end of the study.

Methods: This is a 5-year study in which 31 ESRD patients on APD were recruited after fulfilling inclusion criteria.

SimCOVID: Open-Source Simulation Programs for the COVID-19 Outbreak.

This paper presents open-source computer simulation programs developed for simulating, tracking, and estimating the COVID-19 outbreak. The programs consist of two separate parts: one set of programs built in Simulink with a block diagram display, and another one coded in MATLAB as scripts. The mathematical model used in this package is the SIR, SEIR, SEIRD, and SEIRV models represented by a set of differential-algebraic equations.

The influence of eroding Djallonke genotype on the incidence of diseases and mortalities in Sahelian x Djallonke cross-bred sheep.

Despite cross-breeding of Djallonke and Sahelian sheep due to the higher growth rate and final body weight of the Sahelian breeds over time, little scientific evidence exists on the ability of the crosses to withstand diseases compared to their Djallonke parents. A study involving 700 Djallonke and two crosses of the Djallonke and Sahelian breeds (50% Sahel × 50% Djallonke, 75% Sahel × 25% Djallonke) was conducted, and documented incidence of diseases, parasites and mortalities in these animals. Enteritis, Ehrlichia ruminantium and orf were more prevalent in 25% Djallonke than both 100% and 50% Djallonkes.

Background: Ultrafiltration is an alternative strategy to diuretic therapy for the treatment of patients with acute decompensated heart failure. Little is known about the efficacy and safety of peritoneal dialysis in patients with acute decompensated heart failure complicated by acute cardiorenal syndrome.

Methods: We randomly assigned a total of 88 patients with type 1 acute cardiorenal syndrome to a strategy of ultrafiltration therapy (44 patients) or tidal peritoneal dialysis (44 patients).

Sarcoidosis with multiple organ involvement associated with necrotizing crescentic glomerulonephritis.

We report a case of a young Saudi male who presented with generalized body weakness and easy fatigability associated with fever, night sweating, loss of weight and appetite, and renal impairment. He was diagnosed as a case of sarcoidosis, and renal biopsy report was consistent with necrotizing crescentic glomerulonephritis (GN). Immunosuppressive medication was started to help halting the progression to renal failure and stabilize renal function.

Owing to the paucity of information on the reproductive biology of guinea fowls, a study involving a total of 132 birds was conducted, and this documented the developmental changes in the gross anatomy of the reproductive organs of males and females from hatching until 32 weeks of age (WOA), and associated steroid hormone changes. Testicular anatomical biometric traits increased significantly ( < 0.0001) from 8 WOA, and stabilised between 16 and 20 WOA, while peripheral testosterone concentration peaked at 20 WOA.

Peritoneal Dialysis in Adult Patients with Permanent Suprapubic Catheter: A Single-Center Experience and Literature Review.

Background: The aim of this paper was to review the feasibility of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in the presence of a permanent suprapubic catheter over a long follow-up period.

Methods: Twelve patients with automated PD and permanent suprapubic catheters were studied for complications over a period of 10 years.

Results: In all 12 patients, PD went smoothly.

Acute Kidney Injury in Critically Ill Patients: A Prospective Randomized Study of Tidal Peritoneal Dialysis Versus Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy.

Few studies have discussed the role of peritoneal dialysis (PD) in managing acute kidney injury (AKI) in critically ill patients. The present study compares the outcome of AKI in intensive care unit (ICU) patients randomized to treatment with tidal PD (TPD) or continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF). One hundred and twenty-five ICU patients with AKI were randomly allotted to CVVHDF, (Group A, N = 62) or TPD, (group B, N = 63).

As little information is available on the reproductive system of guinea fowl a study was conducted on 49 male guinea fowl to document the histological structure and developmental changes in the luminal diameter of the ducts within the excurrent duct system and associated changes in concentrations of testosterone. Age-related changes were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and medians separated by the Mann-Whitney U-test. Tubuli recti were clearly visible in the guinea fowl and the rete testes were both intracapsular and extracapsular.

Milk-Alkali syndrome induced by H1N1 influenza vaccine.

Milk-Alkali syndrome (MAS) consists of a triad of hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, and acute renal failure. We hereby report a 75-year-old Indian gentleman who presented to our emergency department with a history of generalized weakness and easy fatigability. Investigations were consistent with MAS secondary to calcium carbonate and calcitriol treatment to prevent osteoporosis, aggravated by H1N1 influenza vaccine.

Changes in testosterone synthesis during sexual development were also determined. Age-related changes were analysed using univariate analysis for completely randomised design and means separated using Tukey's test/Kruskal-Wallis test and medians separated by Mann-Whitney U test.

Objective: To evaluate the need for prophylactic antibiotics in automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) patients undergoing flexible colonoscopy.

Patients And Methods: A total of 93 patients on automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) undergoing diagnostic colonoscopy were enrolled in a prospective, randomized study. Patients were randomized into 2 age- and sex-matched groups; group A (46 patients) with intraperitoneal (IP) ceftazidime prior to colonoscopy and group B (47 patients) without prophylactic antibiotics.

One hundred and fifty West African Dwarf (WAD) kids were tested at the National Goats Breeding Station to determine the effects of some neonatal factors on their vigour levels within the first 24 h post-partum. The kids were also tested to establish the relationship between maternal weight, rectal temperature, times of first standing and sucking, sucking period and vigour. The distance covered (in meters) by a kid towards its mother during a 5-min test period was considered as vigour trait.
