Article Synopsis
  • A study aimed to determine the prevalence of arrhythmias in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) using data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 2012 to 2014.
  • It was found that patients with IBD were less likely to be hospitalized for dysrhythmias compared to those without IBD (9.7% vs 14.2%).
  • Contrary to previous beliefs about higher arrhythmia rates in IBD patients, this study indicates that IBD patients have lower hospitalization rates for arrhythmias in comparison to the general population.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is linked to a higher risk of atrial fibrillation (AF), and AF's impact on in-hospital outcomes among COPD patients is not fully understood.
  • A study analyzed data from 1,377,795 patients with COPD exacerbations, revealing that 16.6% had AF, with AF patients experiencing higher mortality rates (2.4% vs. 1%), longer hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs.
  • After adjusting for age and other risk factors, AF emerged as a significant independent predictor for worse outcomes in COPD patients, emphasizing the need for careful management in this population.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune multisystem disorder characterised by high incidence of arterial and venous thrombosis. Cardiovascular manifestations also include valvular heart disease, ventricular thrombi and higher risk for coronary artery disease (CAD). In this case report, we describe a 61-year-old woman who had no significant risk factors for CAD, and presented with aggressive disease in native and graft vessels that required multiple coronary interventions.
