Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the link between JAK2 mutations and unusual venous thrombosis in young individuals living at high altitudes in Saudi Arabia, highlighting the significant health risks associated with myeloproliferative neoplasms.
  • Data was collected from two hospitals over three years, revealing that out of 208 JAK2 tests, only 40 were related to thrombotic events, with a low incidence of JAK2 mutations (5% of participants).
  • The findings suggest that while JAK2 mutations may be relevant for certain types of thrombosis, their routine testing for other cases, especially when blood counts are normal, may not be justified, indicating a need for further research.

Article Synopsis
  • Polycythemia is common and often related to secondary conditions like high-altitude hypoxia, while a rare condition called polycythemia vera (PV) requires a specialized treatment approach.
  • In a study analyzing lab records over three years, out of 208 JAK2 tests, 136 were specifically for polycythemia evaluation, with 22 (16.7%) testing positive for the PV mutation.
  • The findings suggest that many patients at high altitude might be incorrectly evaluated for PV based solely on hemoglobin/hematocrit levels; a distinct CBC pattern in PV patients could help streamline evaluations and reduce unnecessary tests.

Background: Early identification of a patient with infection who may develop sepsis is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, this remains elusive because no single clinical measure or test can reflect complex pathophysiological changes in patients with sepsis. However, multiple clinical and laboratory parameters indicate impending sepsis and organ dysfunction.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) treatment through Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) has an alternative form of video surveillance therapy (VOT) that utilizes the technological capabilities of smartphones to provide patients with low-cost access to doctors without impacting their work and personal life. We aimed to assess TB patients' drug compliance, perceptions, and feasibility towards smartphone-based video direct observed therapy (VDOT) in Jeddah, KSA.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a prospective non-randomized interventional study.

In this paper, a folded slot-based multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna design for Cube Satellite (CubeSat) applications is presented for the ultra-high frequency (UHF) band. A unique combination of a reactively loaded meandered slot with a folded structure is presented to achieve the antenna's miniaturization. The proposed antenna is able to operate over a wide frequency band from 430~510 MHz.

Background: Corneal abrasion is a common disorder frequently faced by ophthalmologists, emergency physicians, and primary care physicians. Ocular antibiotics are one of the management options for corneal abrasion. A comprehensive summary and synthesis of the evidence on antibiotic prophylaxis in traumatic corneal abrasion is thus far unavailable, therefore we conducted this review to evaluate the current evidence regarding this important issue.

There have been multiple reports of patients with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) testing positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) after discharge; however, information on the characteristics of such cases is limited. In this case report, we aimed to identify clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients who had a repeat positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for SARS-CoV-2. We analyzed data of 22 COVID-19 patients who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing after two consecutive negative PCR results following discharge from hospitals.

The infection rate of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in Saudi Arabia is among the lowest in the world. However, it is likely that poor knowledge and awareness of HCV infection could minimize the effectiveness of prevention and control programs in the kingdom. Thus, the study objective was to estimate the prevalence of HCV infection, and to assess current knowledge about it, in the targeted population.

Introduction: Despite solid preventive strategies to reduce the risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, recent reports about its prevalence and predictors are lacking in several Saudi cities at the community level. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of HBV and to identify the most important predictors among the Saudi population in Jeddah city, Saudi Arabia.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 5,584 Saudi people attending primary health-care centers in Jeddah city during 2012/2013.
