Background: Skin is regarded as an essential first line of defense against harmful pathogens and it hosts an ecosystem of microorganisms that create a widely diverse skin microbiome. In chronic wounds, alterations in the host-microbe interactions occur forming polymicrobial biofilms that hinder the process of wound healing. Ribavirin, an antiviral drug, possesses antimicrobial activity, especially against and , which are known as the main opportunistic pathogens in chronic wounds.

Assessment of non-syndromic orofacial cleft severity and associated environmental factors in Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between different environmental risk factors and the severity of cleft lip with/without palate (CL ± P) and cleft palate (CP) in Saudi Arabia.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional national study, of government hospitals in 10 cities distributed across major regions of Saudi Arabia, from June 2020 to June 2021. All newborns with CL ± P or CP were clinically examined and evaluated for cleft phenotype severity using the LAHSHAL classification system.

Maternal stress as a risk factor for non-syndromic orofacial clefts: Systematic review and -analysis.

Background: Non-syndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFC) are among the most common congenital malformations. Several studies have investigated the association between stress and NSOFC; however, they have reported different and heterogeneous results. Therefore, this systematic review was conducted to investigate the association between maternal periconceptional stress and non-syndromic orofacial clefts in infants.

Spanlastics as a Potential Platform for Enhancing the Brain Delivery of Flibanserin: In Vitro Response-Surface Optimization and In Vivo Pharmacokinetics Assessment.

Flibanserin was licensed by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an oral non-hormonal therapy for pre-menopausal women with inhibited sexual desire disorder. Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness, Antibiotics Prescription Errors and Dispensing Patterns by Community Pharmacists in Saudi Arabia.

Background: Antibiotic overuse and misuse have greatly facilitated the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of the countries that took a strategic approach, beginning with the prohibition of over-the-counter antibiotic dispensing, followed by the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs and various educational and awareness governmental activities and plans. However, the status of antibiotic prescriptions and dispensing in Saudi community pharmacies is still unclear.

Brain Gene Silencing with Cationic Amino-Capped Poly(ethylene glycol) Polyplexes.

Therapeutic gene silencing in the brain is usually achieved using highly invasive intracranial administration methods and/or comparatively toxic vectors. In this work, we use a relatively biocompatible vector: poly(ethylene glycol) star-shaped polymer capped with amine groups (4APPA) via the nose to brain route. 4APPA complexes anti- itchy E3 ubiquitin protein ligase (anti-ITCH) siRNA to form positively charged (zeta potential +15 ± 5 mV) 150 nm nanoparticles.

Transdermal Film Loaded with Avanafil Ultra-deformable Nanovesicles to Enhance its Percutaneous Absorption and Bioavailability.

The in vitro dissolution of Avanafil (AVA) is the rate-limiting step for its bioavailability. Also, it undergoes the first-pass metabolism, and its absorption is altered significantly in the presence of food. So, our study aimed to overcome the previous hurdles and improve the AVA bioavailability by its incorporation in the ultra-deformable nanovesicles, transfersomes (TRF), then loading these nanovesicles in transdermal films.

Investigating the Potential of Transdermal Delivery of Avanafil Using Vitamin E-TPGS Based Mixed Micelles Loaded Films.

To avoid the first-pass metabolism of avanafil (AVA) and its altered absorption in the presence of food after oral administration, this study aimed to investigate the potential of TPGS-based mixed micelle (MM)-loaded film for transdermal delivery and the enhancement of bioavailability. A Box-Behnken design was employed to optimize the permeation behavior of AVA from the transdermal film across the skin. The variables were the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) of the surfactant (X), the concentration of mixed micelles (MMs) in the film (X), and the concentration of the permeation enhancer (X).

Radiomics, aptamers and nanobodies: New insights in cancer diagnostics and imaging.

At present, cancer is a major health issue and the second leading cause of mortality worldwide. Researchers have been working hard on investigating not only improved therapeutics but also on early detection methods, both critical to increasing treatment efficacy and developing methods for disease prevention. Diagnosis of cancers at an early stage can promote timely medical intervention and effective treatment and will result in inhibiting tumor growth and development.

Improved Transmucosal Delivery of Glimepiride via Unidirectional Release Buccal Film Loaded With Vitamin E TPGS-Based Nanocarrier.

Glimepiride (GMD) is a hypoglycemic agent that has variation in bioavailability for its unexpected absorption. Glimepiride was formulated in a buccal film loaded with a nanobased formulation to enhance its absorption via buccal mucosa. Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) and d-α-tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate-based micelles enhance GMD solubility and improve its permeation through the buccal mucosa.

Reference intervals of thyroid hormones in a previously iodine-deficient area in Darfur, Sudan.

Background: Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), thyroxin (T4) and T3 levels are varied in the different settings with disorders of thyroid homeostasis. It is recommended that every setting has to establish its own reference intervals (RIs) for these hormones.

Methods: A multi-stage stratified sampling method was used to select a representative sample of a Sudanese adult (>20 years of age) in Nyala in western Sudan in the Darfur region during the period between January and June 2016 to establish RIs of thyroid-related hormones (TSH, T4 and T3).

Anterior versus posterior approaches for thoracic disc herniation: Association with postoperative complications.

Objective: Thoracic disc herniations (TDH) represent 1.5-4% of all intervertebral disc herniations. Surgical treatment can be divided into anterior, lateral and posterior approaches and is an area of contention in the literature.

Superiority of peginterferon α-2a and ribavirin combination over peginterferon α-2a monotherapy in the management of hemodialysis patients with chronic Hepatitis C virus infection.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a common infection affecting 15% of hemodialysis population in Saudi Arabia resulting in delay in transplantation and long-term complications. The use of peginterferon resulted in sustained virologic response (SVR) in 40%-85% of patients, especially if combined with ribavirin. The treatment is hampered by the high dropout due to anemia and requirement of blood transfusion resulting from this therapy.

Background/aims: Evidence-based medicine has established itself in the field of gastroenterology. In this study we aim to assess the types of study designs of gastroenterology-related articles published in Saudi scientific journals.

Patients And Methods: An online review using PubMed was carried out to review gastroenterology-related articles published in six Saudi medical journals in the time interval from 2003 to 2012.

Kidney transplant from sickle cell trait donor to sickle cell trait recipient.

There have been concerns about using kidneys from potential donors with sickle cell trait because kidneys from these donors may not concentrate urine properly. We report a case of living-related renal transplant, in which both the recipient and the donor had sickle cell trait, and the postoperative course for both was uneventful.

Multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis in a patient presenting with bilateral gluteal abscesses and right leg swelling with end-stage renal disease.

This is a 40-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). She received empirical treatment for presumed TB of the right knee joint. The arthritis and the constitutional symptoms resolved despite the patient's poor compliance.

Spontaneous singleton and twin pregnancy in two patients with polycystic ovary syndrome and type 2 diabetes following treatment with metformin combined with rosiglitazone.

Two women, a Saudi Arab and a Caucasian, aged 28 and 41 years, had a long history of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and primary infertility, which was refractory to various treatment modalities. Both later developed type 2 diabetes, managed initially with metformin; rosiglitazone was added later to improve glycaemic control. Both conceived spontaneously, resulting in singleton and twin pregnancies giving birth to healthy babies.
