Article Synopsis
  • Hereditary myopathies involve several hundred genetic variants, with Limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMDs) being a diverse group of disorders linked to more than 30 genes, characterized primarily by limb weakness.
  • The study analyzed 2,372 patients across 21 countries to assess the prevalence of LGMD and Pompe disease through next-generation sequencing (NGS), finding that 11% had pathogenic genetic variants, with a high diagnostic effectiveness for LGMD (86.2%).
  • The findings emphasize the importance of including specific genes in NGS panels for diagnosing LGMW, contributing to a better understanding of LGMD and aiding in the identification of late-onset Pompe disease.

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is an immune-mediated condition with variable clinical characteristics and different treatment modalities. We aim to present different clinical and demographic features of all patients with CIDP presented to the neuromuscular clinic within four years and their follow-up results. A retrospective study from a hospital database of 23 patients met the European Federation of Neurological Societies/Peripheral Nerve Society (EFNS/PNS) diagnostic criteria for CIPD.

Introduction: The clinical, social, and economic burden of epilepsy is undeniable. Local guidance on epilepsy management is limited and needed to address the both use of anti-seizure medication (ASM) and switching practices which influence clinical outcomes.

Areas Covered: An expert panel composed of practicing neurologists and epileptologists from countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) met in 2022 to discuss local challenges in the management of epilepsy and formulate recommendations for clinical practice.

Pompe disease is a rare, metabolic, autosomal recessive disorder. Early diagnosis is critical for progressive Pompe disease as delays can significantly alter the clinical course of the disease. Diagnostic modalities, including dried blood spot testing and genetic testing, are available and are effective for diagnosing patients with late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD).

Background: The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) has been changing not only globally but also in individual countries. We aim to estimate the prevalence of MS in the Omani population over the period from 2006-2019 as well as the incidence between 2015-2018.

Methods: This is a retrospective observational hospital-based study.

Objective: Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an acute autoimmune-mediated peripheral nervous system disease. Different studies from various geographical regions have reported considerable variability regarding its epidemiology, clinical features, and outcome. Our study aimed to document demographics, clinical features, and outcomes among GBS patients admitted to a single tertiary care hospital in Muscat, Oman.

Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) represents an evolving spectrum of inflammatory demyelinating central nervous system-based autoimmune diseases; while anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is another severe immune-mediated syndrome that occurs in association with IgG antibodies against the GluN1 subunit of the NMDAR and has been predominantly reported in young females (Dalmau et al., 2008 Dec). Although It has been recognized that anti-NMDAR encephalitis can coexist in the same patient who has serological markers of another autoimmune disease (e.

Background: Few studies have assessed the performance of stroke prevention clinics. In particular, limited information exists on patient compliance, achievement of therapeutic targets, and related occurrence of vascular events.

Methods: We compared our clinical practice to recommendations from published guidelines in newly referred patients for transient ischemic attack (TIA) or ischemic stroke between 2008 and 2010.
