The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of salicylic acid (SA) on wheat subjected to cadmium (Cd) stress. The experiments were conducted during the winter season of 2022-2023 (November to February) at the University of the Punjab in Lahore, Pakistan. The study involved four wheat varieties: Akbar-2019, Galaxy-2013, Ujala-16, and Chakwal-86.

Article Synopsis
  • - Lung and colon cancer (LCC) is a serious disease that requires accurate and timely diagnosis, as conventional methods often face challenges in efficiency and accuracy, impacting early detection and treatment outcomes.
  • - The study introduces a new approach called Lung and Colon Cancer using a Swin Transformer with an Ensemble Model on Histopathological Images (LCCST-EMHI), which combines deep learning techniques and image processing to enhance the diagnosis and classification of LCC.
  • - The LCCST-EMHI method uses various advanced techniques like bilateral filtering for noise reduction, Swin Transformer for feature extraction, and an ensemble of three deep learning classifiers, showing promising results through extensive simulations on benchmark datasets.

Cadmium, a hazardous heavy metal prevalent in plants and soil, poses a significant threat to human health, particularly as approximately 60% of the global population consumes wheat, which can accumulate high levels of Cd through its roots. This uptake leads to the translocation of Cd to the shoots and grains, exacerbating the potential health risks. However, promising results have been observed with the use of moringa leaf extract (MLE) foliar spray in mitigating the adverse effects of Cd stress.

Article Synopsis
  • The increasing instances of acute poisoning from multiple drug exposures can lead to more severe toxicity than individual drugs alone, yet research on drug-drug interactions (DDIs) is limited and generally inconclusive.* -
  • This study analyzed 169 adult patients who were treated for acute drug poisoning, finding that 40.8% had taken multiple drugs, resulting in 726 potential DDIs, over half of which were significant, predominantly involving antidepressants and psychotropics.* -
  • Patients with multiple drug ingestions tended to be older and presented with more severe symptoms, leading to increased chances of needing mechanical ventilation, ICU admission, and longer hospital stays.*

Article Synopsis
  • Wheat is a super important crop for food, but its production has been going down because of drought and water problems.
  • Researchers tested a plant hormone called abscisic acid (ABA) to see if it could help wheat grow better during tough stages when drought makes it hard for the plants to survive.
  • They found that using ABA made the wheat plants taller and healthier, increasing yields and improving many growth factors, which helped the plants deal with the drought better.

This investigation portrays the phytochemical screening, green synthesis, characterization of Fe and Zn nanoparticles, their antibacterial, anti-inflammation, cytotoxicity, and anti-thrombolytic activities. Four dissimilar solvents such as, -hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and -butanol were used to prepare the extracts of Royle ex Benth. This is valued medicinal plant (Family Lamiaceae), native to mountains of Afghanistan and Kashmir.

Drought stress (DS) is a significant abiotic stress that limits agricultural productivity worldwide. In semi-arid climates, one potential solution to alleviate the deleterious effects of drought is the use of soil amendments such as nanoparticles. The current research was conducted out to probe the sway of drought at critical growth stages (CGS) of wheat crop (D: Control, D: Drought at tillering stage, and D: Drought at anthesis stage) and the application of Cu-nanoparticles (T: 0 mg L, T: 300 mg L, T: 700 mg L, and T: 950 mg L) in order to improve drought resilience.

Large amount of wastes are burnt or left to decompose on site or at landfills where they cause air pollution and nutrient leaching to groundwater. Waste management strategies that return these food wastes to agricultural soils recover the carbon and nutrients that would otherwise have been lost, enrich soils and improve crop productivity. The incorporation of liming materials can neutralize the protons released, hence reducing soil acidity and its adverse impacts to the soil environment, food security, and human health.

Irrigation of crops with domestic wastewater (DW) is a common practice in developing countries like India. However, domestic wastewater irrigation poses a risk of migration of toxic heavy metals to edible parts of crops, which requires serious measures to prevent their uptake. In this study, the effect of DW irrigation in comparison with Sarbal Lake water (SLW) and borewell water (BW) on soil characteristics and cultivated saffron ( L.

Cadmium (Cd) accumulates in the vegetative tissues of rice and wheat crops, posing a serious threat in the food chain. A long-term field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of rice husk biochar (RHB), farm manure (FM), press mud (PrM), and poultry manure (PM) on the growth, yield, and economics of wheat and rice crops grown with sewage water. The results showed that RHB increased wheat plant height (27%, 66%, 70%), spike-length (33%, 99%, 56%), straw yield (21%, 51%, 49%), and grain yield (42%, 63%, 65%) in year-1, year-2, and year-3, than respective controls.

Dynamic shifts in climatic patterns increase soil salinity and boron levels, which are the major abiotic factors that affect plant growth and secondary metabolism. The present study assessed the role of growth regulators, including biochar (5 g kg) and gallic acid (GA, 2 mM), in altering leaf morpho-anatomical and physiological responses of L. exposed to boron (25 mg kg) and salinity stresses (150 mM NaCl).

Most bacterial disinfectants contain high levels of extremely toxic and environmental hazardous chemicals, which pose a significant threat to the ecosystem. Semiconductor photocatalysis exhibits attractive prospects as an emerging greener technology for waste water disinfection. However, the fast recombination of charge carriers limits its practical application.

Background: The mountainous region of Kashmir is a biodiversity hotspot, with diverse local communities and a rich cultural history linked to nature. Mountain ecosystems are highly vulnerable to climate change. This study emphasises the need to record the indigenous ethnoecological knowledge of wild plants used for the treatment of various ailments at higher elevations in remote areas where globalisation poses a threat to this traditional knowledge.

Background: The quality of life (QoL) of patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) who undergo dialysis is a reliable predictor of their long-term survival. Hemodialysis is the most common form of kidney replacement therapy for ESKD, followed by peritoneal dialysis. This study aimed to identify the factors affecting QoL in ESKD patients treated with peritoneal dialysis (PD) or hemodialysis (HD) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Background: The ABO, Rh, and Kell blood group antigens are clinically significant. Knowledge of antigen frequencies is important to assess the risk of alloimmunization and to guide the probability of finding antigen-negative donor blood. Patients that lack such antigens may produce antibodies that may cause transfusion reaction.

The Emergency Departments (EDs), in hospitals located in a few important areas in Saudi Arabia, experience a heavy inflow of patients due to viral illnesses, pandemics, and even on a few special occasions events such as Hajj or Umrah, when pilgrims travel from one region to another with severe disease conditions. Apart from the EDs, it is critical to monitor the movements of patients from EDs to other wards inside the hospital or in the region. This is to track the spread of viral illnesses that require more attention.
