Spinal cord ischemia and injury pose significant challenges in spinal surgery and traumatic events. Cerebrospinal drains are considered a potential intervention to mitigate these risks, although their efficacy and safety are uncertain. We conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of cerebrospinal drains in preventing and managing spinal cord ischemia and injury.

Background: We previously identified the novel mechanism of pathological tau transfer via extracellular vesicles (EVs) in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Targeting EV secretion to mitigate tau transfer is therefore a promising therapeutic approach for AD. P2X purinoreceptor 7 (P2RX7), an ATP-gated cationic channel, regulates microvesicle shedding or secretion of multivesicular body-derived exosomes.

Introduction: The relationship between Alzheimer's disease (AD) plasma biomarkers, and physical functioning (PF) across diverse races and ethnicities remains unclear. This study aims to explore this association in an ethno-racially diverse sample of cognitively unimpaired community-dwelling adults.

Methods: Data clinical examinations, neuropsychological tests, blood draws, and PF exams (Timed Up and Go [TUG] and Short Physical Performance Battery [SPPB]) were analyzed.

Background: Gut dysbiosis, chronic diseases, and microbial recurrent infections concerns have driven the researchers to explore phytochemicals from medicinal and food homologous plants to modulate gut microbiota, mitigate diseases, and inhibit pathogens. Gingerols have attracted attention as therapeutic agents due to their diverse biological activities like gut microbiome regulation, gastro-protective, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-oxidative effects.

Purpose: This review aimed to summarize the gingerols health-promoting potential, specifically focusing on the regulation of gut microbiome, attenuation of disease symptoms, mechanisms of action, and signaling pathways involved.

Protein glycosylation, a vital post-translational modification, is pivotal in various biological processes and disease pathogenesis. Computational approaches, including protein language models and machine learning algorithms, have emerged as valuable tools for predicting O-GlcNAc sites, reducing experimental costs, and enhancing efficiency. However, the literature has not reported the prediction of O-GlcNAc sites through the evolutionary scale model (ESM).

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as promising tools in diagnostics and therapy for chronic diseases, including cancer and Alzheimer's. Small EVs, also called exosomes, are lipid-bound particles (≈30-150 nm) that play a role in healthy and pathophysiological interactions, including intercellular communication, by transporting bioactive molecules, including proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Their ability to cross biological barriers, such as the blood-brain barrier, makes them ideal candidates for targeted therapeutic interventions.

The present study aimed to determine the prevalence rate of intestinal protozoan infection among children in Duhok Province, North of Iraq, from October 2022 to May 2023. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 740 children attending Hevi Pediatric Hospital, Duhok Province, Iraq. Firstly, all collected stool samples were examined directly by preparing a wet stool smear for the detection of the vegetative stage (Trophozoite) of both and lamblia.

Background: The interplay of OGG1, 8-Oxoguanine, and oxidative stress triggers the exaggerated release of cytokines during malaria, which worsens the outcome of the disease. We aimed to investigate the involvement of OGG1 in malaria and assess the effect of modulating its activity on the cytokine environment and anemia during malaria in mice.

Methods: infection in ICR mice was used as a malaria model.

Introduction Spinal fusion surgery with pedicle screws is commonly performed to stabilize the spine of osteoporotic patients. However, securing a strong screw fixation in osteoporotic bone presents significant challenges due to the reduced bone density. This study aimed to compare the biomechanical performance in an osteoporotic bone model of pedicle screws inserted using two different techniques, the Jamshidi needle technique and the pedicle probe technique, as well as the influence of tapping on both these techniques.

The selection of the most effective surgical approach is a critical decision in major surgery. With several approaches available, it is important to select the one that will have the most beneficial effect on the patient's health. Multi criteria decision making techniques are essential for identifying the most effective surgical approach to optimize patient health.

Introduction: The emergence of mutations in the BCR::ABL1 kinase domain (KD) impairs imatinib mesylate (IM) binding capacity, thus contributing to IM resistance. Identification of these mutations is important for treatment decisions and precision medicine in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) patients. Our study aims to determine the frequency of BCR::ABL1 KD mutations in CML patients with IM resistance.

Determining the optimum application dosage of probiotic in biofloc system is often challenging because the microbial community seems to exert similar effects irrespective of their dosages. It is however noted that certain dosages promote higher yield in shrimp culture more effectively. Principal component analysis was adopted to identify these optimum dosages where 1-way ANOVA could not clearly identify due to the effects of microbial community.

Background: There is a global consensus that respiratory tract infections are the major causes of morbidity and mortality among children. In this study, we aimed to compare the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections among children admitted to hospital with acute respiratory infections. We also opted to identify the predictors of paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission.

Biological organisms engineer peptide sequences to fold into membrane pore proteins capable of performing a wide variety of transport functions. Synthetic de novo-designed membrane pores can mimic this approach to achieve a potentially even larger set of functions. Here we explore water, solute, and ion transport in three de novo designed β-barrel membrane channels in the 5-10 Å pore size range.
