Objective: To determine the percentage occurrence, demographic and clinical features of psoriasis in adult patients at King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al-Khobar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Methods: The medical records of all the adult patients with psoriasis were analyzed from January 1991 to December 1994 at the dermatology clinic, King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al-Khobar, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The prenylated Rab acceptor (PRA) 1 is a protein that binds prenylated Rab GTPases and inhibits their removal from the membrane by GDI. We describe here the isolation of a second isoform that can also bind Rab GTPases in a guanine nucleotide-independent manner. The two PRA isoforms showed distinct intracellular localization with PRA1 localized primarily to the Golgi complex and PRA2 to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) compartment.

Analysis of current fluctuations during after-hyperpolarization current in dentate granule neurones of the rat hippocampus.

1. We have studied macroscopic current fluctuations associated with the after-hyperpolarization current (IAHP) that follows a 200 ms voltage-clamp step to 0 mV in dentate granule (DG) neurones of the rat hippocampus. This maximally effective stimulus produced a peak IAHP of 205 +/- 20 pA.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors enhance a Ca(2+)-activated K+ current (IAHP) and reduce IAHP suppression by a metabotropic glutamate receptor agonist in rat dentate granule neurones.

Activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) inhibits a transient Ca(2+)-activated K+ current (IAHP) responsible for the slow after-hyperpolarization that follows depolarizations of dentate granule neurones in rat hippocampal brain slices. Here we show for the first time that this physiological consequence of mGluR stimulation is selectively attenuated by blockers of protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs).

Metabotropic glutamate receptors coupled to IP3 production mediate inhibition of IAHP in rat dentate granule neurons.

Whole cell recordings from dentate granule neurons in the hippocampal slice preparation reveal that (1 S, 3R)-1-aminocyclopentane-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (ACPD), a selective agonist at metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), inhibits a calcium-activated potassium current (IAHP) responsible for the postspike after-hyperpolarization. Inclusion of 1 mM of the Ca2+ chelator ethylene glycol-bis (beta-aminoethyl ether)-N,N,N',N'-tetraacetic acid in the patch pipette reduced the inhibitory action of ACPD on IAHP while having no effect on a similar action of serotonin (5-HT).

To test the hypothesis that continual phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of protein components of nerve terminals might be important determinants of synaptic efficacy, the effect of okadaic acid, a potent natural inhibitor of two serine threonine protein phosphatases (phosphatase 1 and phosphatase 2A), was examined on synaptic transmission at frog (cholinergic) and lobster (glutamatergic and GABAergic) neuromuscular junctions. The use of well developed and adequately distributed Primary Health Care (PHC) centers for the control of schistosomiasis in the infested areas in the Central Province of Saudi Arabia around the capital city of Riyadh has proven feasible producing satisfactory results. Vasopressin produces long-lasting increase in transmitter release.

Arginine-vasopressin has a widespread distribution in the nervous system, and has been implicated in cellular and behavioral functions. Its effect on the neuromuscular synapse reveals that it produces long-lasting augmentation in synaptic transmission due to an increase in spontaneous and nerve stimulation evoked quantal transmitter release. No significant postsynaptic effect was detected.
