Assessment of patients waiting and service times in the ophthalmology clinic of a public tertiary hospital in Nigeria.

Introduction: Long waiting time in the out-patient clinic is a major cause of dissatisfaction in Eye care services. This study aimed to assess patients' waiting and service times in the out-patient Ophthalmology clinic of UITH.

Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in March and April 2019.

Prevalence of minimal hepatic encephalopathy among patients with chronic liver disease in Ilorin, Nigeria.

Background: Minimal Hepatic encephalopathy is the mildest form of Hepatic Encephalopathy which presents with significant cognitive impairment and affectation of activities of daily living. The literature is scanty on the prevalence of minimal hepatic encephalopathy in Nigerians with chronic liver disease.

Aim: This study aimed at determining the prevalence of minimal hepatic encephalopathy among patients with chronic liver disease using neuro-psychometric tests.

Oesophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis: a rare endoscopic finding.

Unlabelled: Oesophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis is an uncommon condition, characterized by multiple small rounded cavities seen in the oesophageal wall during oesophagogastroduodenoscopy. It is often associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, achalasia, oesophageal candidiasis and diabetes mellitus. We report a 40 year old Nigerian man who presented with recurrent dysphagia and endoscopic findings typical of oesophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis.

Familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome with colorectal cancer in two Nigerians: a report of two cases and review of literature.

Familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome is a rare condition characterized by the presence of numerous adenomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract and associated with risk for colorectal cancer. The disease is scarcely reported in Nigeria and this is the index report in Ilorin. Two cases were clinically diagnosed in our facility.

Prevalence of antibody to hepatitis B core antigen among hepatitis B surface antigen-negative blood donors in Ilorin, Nigeria: A cross-sectional study.

Background: Post-transfusion hepatitis occurs even with stringent donor selection criteria and screening for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) in HBsAg-negative blood donors.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study in which 200 HBsAg-negative blood donors were recruited.

Endoscopic removal of impacted oesophageal foreign body: A case report and a review of literature.

Foreign body (FB) impaction in the oesophagus is fairly common in paediatric Gastroenterology practice. This study aims to describe a case of an unusually impacted button lithium battery, in the mid-oesophagus of a 7-year-old child that was confirmed, and removed during oesophagogastroduodenoscopy. A 7-year-old male child, presented at the Emergency Paediatric Unit of our hospital with a history of ingestion of a button-like metallic object.

That dyspepsia in the young could be cancer.

Malignant tumour of the stomach is not common in young adults. When it does occur, it is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. The objective of this report is to document our experience with three cases of gastric adenocarcinoma in young adult Nigerians seen over a period of 18 months in our centre.

Indications and findings at colonoscopy in Ilorin, Nigeria.

Background: Colonoscopy is a safe and effective means of visual inspection of the large bowel from the distal rectum to the caecum. It may be carried out for diagnostic and or therapeutic reasons. There is a paucity of data on this procedure in Nigeria.

As a result of this trend, it is fast becoming an epidemic in some countries of the world with the number of people affected expected to double in the next decade due to increase in ageing population, thereby adding to the already existing burden for healthcare providers, especially in poorly developed countries. Risk factors and clinical presentation of hepatitis C virus infection in Nigerians with chronic liver disease.

Chronic liver disease is becoming a major public health problem in Nigeria and hepatitis C virus is becoming a significant causative factor in its aetiology worldwide and in Nigeria. We determined the risk factors and clinical presentation of hepatitis C virus infection in Nigerians with chronic liver disease. A structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was administered in order to determine the risk factors for hepatitis C virus infection and a physical examination was carried out in order to determine the clinical presentation.

Factors associated with nocturnal, productive and dry cough in the young adult population of Nigeria.
