Background: Thyroid hormones have an effect on every organ system, in particular, the heart responds to minimal changes in serum thyroid hormone level. Thyroid hormone causes a lot of changes in the cardiovascular system, such as increased heart rate, contractility, systolic hypertension, changes in peripheral vascular resistance, atrial fibrillation (AF), and hypercoagulability from the direct effect of thyroid hormone on cardiac myocyte and /or due to increased metabolic state. However, the magnitude of such heart abnormalities and its associated factors were not well studied in Ethiopia.

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) pose a significant global health challenge, constituting over 80% of mortality and morbidity. This burden is particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Ethiopia. Despite this, there's limited research on this issue in Africa.

Background: Infectious diseases are among the leading causes of death in many low-income countries, such as Ethiopia. Without reliable local data concerning causative pathogens and antimicrobial resistance, empiric treatment is suboptimal. The objective of this study was to characterize gram-negative bacteria (GNB) as pathogens and their resistance pattern in hospitalized patients with infections in central Ethiopia.

Background: Despite the necessity of early recognition for an optimal outcome, sepsis often remains unrecognized. Available tools for early recognition are rarely evaluated in low- and middle-income countries. In this study, we analyzed the spectrum, treatment and outcome of sepsis at an Ethiopian tertiary hospital and evaluated recommended sepsis scores.

Background: Local data from the Asella Teaching and Referral Hospital in the town of Asella, Ethiopia reveal a high prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase- (ESBL) producing Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) in clinical isolates. To investigate a possible route of transmission, we determined the proportions ESBL-producing GNB in isolates from flies caught in the hospital and in the town of Asella.

Methods: Flies were collected in August 2019 from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), the orthopedic ward, the hospital's waste disposal area, and from a butchery situated 1.

Introduction: heart failure (HF) is a major complication following ischemic heart disease (IHD) and it adversely affects the outcome. The objective of this study was to identify predictors of HF in patients with IHD.

Methods: this is a 24-month longitudinal retrospective study of all consecutive patients diagnosed with IHD.

Background: In population studies of heart failure (HF), diabetes has been shown to be an independent risk factor. However, the evidence evaluating diabetes mellitus (DM) as an independent risk factor in incident HF in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) is scarce. Our study aimed to assess the incidence of HF in diabetic IHD patients compared to non-diabetic IHD patients in Ethiopia.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is one of the major public health emergencies worldwide, and this trend didn't spare developing countries like Ethiopia. The objective of this study was to evaluate patterns of bacterial isolates and local antimicrobial susceptibility patterns in neonatal sepsis.

Methods: A hospital based observational study was conducted from April 2016 to May 2017 in Asella teaching and referral hospital (ATRH).

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses the significant issue of HIV/AIDS among military personnel in Africa, specifically focusing on Ethiopia, where evidence about prevention practices is lacking.
  • Approximately 24.6% of military members reported having multiple sexual partners, with a worrying 24.7% not using condoms regularly with non-regular partners.
  • The findings indicate that military personnel with multiple partners are 6.3 times more likely to not participate in prevention programs, highlighting the need for improved health initiatives and education to address misconceptions about HIV/AIDS.

Background: Female genital tuberculosis (FGTB) is known to cause severe tubal disease leading to infertility and its incidence closely parallels with the overall prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) in a community. Its magnitude is underreported because diagnosis is difficult and requires invasive techniques. In this study we determined the prevalence of endometrial tuberculosis and characterized isolates among women who underwent endometrial biopsy for evaluation of various conditions at a Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TAHS), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Background: There are few contemporary data on the mortality and morbidity associated with rheumatic heart disease or information on their predictors. We report the 2-year follow-up of individuals with rheumatic heart disease from 14 low- and middle-income countries in Africa and Asia.

Methods: Between January 2010 and November 2012, we enrolled 3343 patients from 25 centers in 14 countries and followed them for 2 years to assess mortality, congestive heart failure, stroke or transient ischemic attack, recurrent acute rheumatic fever, and infective endocarditis.

Tricuspid valve infective endocarditis is a known complication of injecting drug use (IVDU) and is said to be rare in Africa. The most common etiological microbial agent of infective endocarditis (IE) in IVDU is Methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus. Antibiotic treatment should start immediately after blood cultures have been obtained once IE is diagnosed.

Aims: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) accounts for over a million premature deaths annually; however, there is little contemporary information on presentation, complications, and treatment.

Methods And Results: This prospective registry enrolled 3343 patients (median age 28 years, 66.2% female) presenting with RHD at 25 hospitals in 12 African countries, India, and Yemen between January 2010 and November 2012.
