Coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) is a rare form of coronary artery disease characterized by abnormal dilation of a coronary artery segment. While CAAs can present with various symptoms, syncope is notably uncommon, with limited documented cases. We present the case of a 24-year-old woman with a 2-month history of recurrent syncope, occurring in the absence of other symptoms.

Ageing is an inevitable biological process accompanied by various physiological changes, and researchers have long sought interventions to promote healthy ageing. This article explores the effects of four natural compounds – omega-3 fatty acids, coenzyme Q10, gingerol and curcumin – on the ageing process. We delve into the scientific literature to examine the potential benefits and mechanisms behind these substances in mitigating age-related conditions.

Background: Inhibitor eradication to restore factor (F)VIII efficacy is the treatment goal for persons with severe hemophilia A (HA) and inhibitors. Immune tolerance induction (ITI) is demanding and successful in about 70% of people. Until now, it has remained difficult to quantify the probability of ITI success or failure, complicating the decision to initiate or not initiate ITI.

The search for sustainable, cost-effective and environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors for hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution in industrial applications has garnered increasing interest in plant extracts and their refined metabolites. In this research, L. (CA) extract, found in the Algerian Sahara, was considered due to its low cost compared to other studied plants and higher content of active compounds, thereby emerging as a promising candidate and offering the potential to promote a circular economy model.

Background: The radial approach is now recommended as the default strategy in diagnostic coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention. Radial artery occlusion (RAO) is the most common complication that limits subsequent angiographic procedures through this access. Recently, distal radial access (DRA) has been recommended as an alternative access site.

Background: Electrolyte abnormalities (EAs) worsen the clinical course of patients with heart failure (HF). The patterns of EAs vary among patients with HF. This study investigated patterns and factors associated with EAs among patients with HF admitted to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital (HRRH) in western Uganda.

Background: Carbon monoxide (CO), influences ovarian function, pregnancy, and placental health. Heme oxygenase (HO)-1 and its products, including CO, exhibit protective and anti-inflammatory properties.

Objective: This study investigates the protective effects of CO released by the carbon dioxide-releasing molecule (CORM)-2 against oxidative stress, functional and structural changes of the ovaries, and HO-1 expressions in female rats suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how effective machine learning models are in predicting the need for permanent ventricular shunt placement in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) requiring emergency CSF diversion.
  • A total of 578 patients were reviewed, finding that 20.9% developed shunt-dependent hydrocephalus, with significant predictors identified as the Graeb Score, duration of external ventricular drain, and elevated intracranial pressure over 30 mm Hg.
  • Among the machine learning models assessed, the random forest (RF) model showed the best performance, achieving the highest accuracy of 0.921, along with superior sensitivity and specificity compared to the other models.

Background: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) is a form of gender-based violence that has negative health consequences. The decision to perform FGM/C is often made collectively and a variety of actors influence the decision. There is inconsistent and inconclusive evidence that health education interventions lead behavioural changes related to FGM/C among key decision-makers.

T follicular regulatory (TFR) cells are found in the germinal center (GC) response and, along with T follicular helper (TFH) cells, help to control the development of high-affinity antibodies (Ab). Although TFR cells are generally thought to repress GC B cells and the Ab response, we have previously shown that in a mouse food allergy model, TFR cells produce IL-10 and play an essential helper role such that in the absence of TFR cells, IgE responses are diminished. Here we show that in this food allergy response, TFR cells produced IL-4 that promotes the generation of antigen-specific IgE.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of death globally, with low- and middle-income countries disproportionately affected. Somalia, a nation grappling with persistent humanitarian crises and a rising burden of non-communicable diseases, has limited data on CVD prevalence and its risk factors. This study, the first of its kind in Somalia, leverages data from the inaugural nationally representative demographic health survey to examine the prevalence and associated factors of CVD among Somali adults.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) causes disease outbreaks in livestock and humans; however, its inter-epidemic circulation is poorly understood, similar to other arboviruses affecting cattle such as bluetongue virus (BTV) and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV). Serum samples were collected in Baringo County, Kenya from 400 cattle, accompanied by a risk factor questionnaire. Serological tests were then conducted to determine the exposure of cattle to RVFV, BTV, and EHDV.

Objectives: Acquisition of antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum variant surface antigens (VSA) expressed on infected red blood cells (iRBCs) is associated with naturally acquired immunity to malaria. We have previously shown that antibodies to VSA on iRBCs are associated with protection against parasite growth in the context of controlled human malaria infection (CHMI). This study explored whether antibodies to recombinant antigens derived from PfEMP1 domains were independently associated with protection during CHMI in semi-immune Kenyan adults.
