Dieulafoy's Lesion of the Anal Canal: A Rare Cause of Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding.

BACKGROUND Dieulafoy's lesion of the anal canal is an uncommon cause of lower gastrointestinal bleeding due to rupture of a submucosal artery. This could be an under-recognized cause of hemorrhagic shock in rare cases. CASE REPORT We present 2 cases admitted with bleeding per rectum and hemorrhagic shock, and both were diagnosed as Dieulafoy's lesion of the anal canal on sigmoidoscopy.

Single Versus Multiple Solid Organ Injuries Following Blunt Abdominal Trauma.

Background: We aimed to describe the pattern of solid organ injuries (SOIs) and analyze the characteristics, management and outcomes based on the multiplicity of SOIs.

Methods: A retrospective study in a Level 1 trauma center was conducted and included patients admitted with blunt abdominal trauma between 2011 and 2014. Data were analyzed and compared for patients with single versus multiple SOIs.

Lipophilicity estimation of statins as a decisive physicochemical parameter for their hepato-selectivity using reversed-phase thin layer chromatography.

Lipophilicity plays a crucial role in determining the hepato-selectivity and hence, the biological activity and the associated side effects of statins. Herein, the employment of RP-TLC for estimation of lipophilicity of six statins namely; atorvastatin, simvastatin, pravastatin, lovastatin, rosuvastatin and fluvastatin is examined. A very good correlation between the chromatographically-determined retention parameters (relative lipophilicity (R) or lipophilic parameter (C)) and both experimental and computed log P values were obtained.

Association of IL-10 gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis in Egyptian children and adolescents: a case-control study.

Background: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic arthritis in children worldwide. Among anti-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-10 (IL-10) is a key immunosuppressive cytokine involved in the pathogenesis of JIA. To date, only a few studies concerned the association of interleukin-10 gene polymorphisms with JIA.

Aquaculture genomics, genetics and breeding in the United States: current status, challenges, and priorities for future research.

Advancing the production efficiency and profitability of aquaculture is dependent upon the ability to utilize a diverse array of genetic resources. The ultimate goals of aquaculture genomics, genetics and breeding research are to enhance aquaculture production efficiency, sustainability, product quality, and profitability in support of the commercial sector and for the benefit of consumers. In order to achieve these goals, it is important to understand the genomic structure and organization of aquaculture species, and their genomic and phenomic variations, as well as the genetic basis of traits and their interrelationships.

Vitamin D receptor gene BsmI polymorphisms in Egyptian children and adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus: A case-control study.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic autoimmune disease. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene is a candidate gene for susceptibility to autoimmune disorders. To date, only a few studies concerned the association of the VDR gene polymorphisms with childhood-onset SLE.

There is wide diversity in the description of liver segmentation with sometimes contradictory terminology between French and American literature. Attempts were made to create a unified nomenclature that simplifies the problem.

Polyarteritis nodosa presenting as a bladder outlet obstruction.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) of the urinary tract is rare. An unusual case of systemic PAN involving the bladder neck is described. A 27-year-old man, with known diastolic hypertension diagnosed 2 years earlier, was admitted with chronic urinary obstruction complicated by hydronephrosis.

Early and late intramedullary nailing of femur fracture: A single center experience.

Background: Femur fracture (FF) is a common injury, and intramedullary nailing (IMN) is the standard surgical fixation. However, the time of intervention remains controversial. We aimed to describe the reamed IMN (rIMN) timing and hospital outcomes in trauma patients presenting with FF.

Automated signal quality assessment of mobile phone-recorded heart sound signals.

Mobile phones, due to their audio processing capabilities, have the potential to facilitate the diagnosis of heart disease through automated auscultation. However, such a platform is likely to be used by non-experts, and hence, it is essential that such a device is able to automatically differentiate poor quality from diagnostically useful recordings since non-experts are more likely to make poor-quality recordings. This paper investigates the automated signal quality assessment of heart sound recordings performed using both mobile phone-based and commercial medical-grade electronic stethoscopes.

Background: Degloving soft tissue injuries (DSTIs) are serious surgical conditions. We aimed to evaluate the pattern, management and outcome of DSTIs in a single institute.

The association of PTPN22 (rs2476601) and IL2RA (rs11594656) polymorphisms with T1D in Egyptian children.

Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is a T cell-mediated autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of pancreatic β cells. PTPN22 and IL2RA polymorphisms have been found to be associated with several autoimmune diseases including T1D.

Aims: We aimed to elucidate the role of PTPN22 and IL2RA polymorphisms in predisposition of T1D in Egyptian children.

Impact of genotype on endocrinal complications in β-thalassemia patients.

In β-thalassemia, certain mutations cause a complete absence of β-globin chain synthesis, termed β-thalassemia, while others may allow certain β-globin production and are termed β- or β-thalassemia. The homozygous state results in severe anemia, which requires regular blood transfusion. By contrast, frequent blood transfusion can in turn lead to iron overload, which may result in several endocrinal complications.

Clinical Presentation and Time-Based Mortality in Patients With Chest Injuries Associated With Road Traffic Accidents.

Background: Blunt chest trauma (BCT) poses significant morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Objectives: We investigated the clinical presentation and outcome of BCT related to road traffic accidents (RTA).

Patients And Methods: A retrospective observational analysis for patients who sustained BCT secondary to RTA in terms of motor vehicle crash (MVC) and pedestrian-motor vehicle accidents (PMVA) who were admitted to the trauma center at Hamad general hospital, Doha, Qatar, between 2008 and 2011.

Design, Synthesis, Antimicrobial Evaluation and Molecular Modeling Study of 1,2,4-Triazole-Based 4-Thiazolidinones.

A series of 3-(2H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl)-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one derivatives (7c-l) was designed and synthesized. Their structures have been elucidated based on analytical and spectral data. They were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities.

Portomesenteric Vein Thrombosis After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: 3 Case Reports and a Literature Review.

Background: Porto-mesenteric venous thrombosis (PMVT) is an infrequent but severe surgical complication developing in patients who underwent laparoscopic bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectomy). Herein, we describe the clinical presentation, management, and outcome of 3 rare cases of PMVT after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), successfully treated at our center.

Case Report: All patients developed PMVT post-LSG and presented with diffused abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Association between Duffy antigen receptor expression and disease severity in sickle cell disease patients.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with a pro-inflammatory state, characterized by an elevated baseline leukocyte count and inflammatory cytokines. Inflammation, white blood cell (WBC) adhesion to vascular endothelium with subsequent endothelial injury, and repeated ischemia-reperfusion injury contribute to disease pathogenesis. Identification of genetic polymorphisms that may modulate disease severity in SCD is becoming a field of interest.

Trauma research in Qatar: a literature review and discussion of progress after establishment of a trauma research centre.

A structured research programme is one of the main pillars of a trauma care system. Despite the high rate of injury-related mortalities, especially road traffic accidents, in Qatar, little consideration has been given to research in trauma. This review aimed to analyse research publications on the subject of trauma published from Qatar and to discuss the progress of clinical research in Qatar and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries with special emphasis on trauma research.

Design and Synthesis of Substituted Pyridazinone-1-Acetylhydrazones as Novel Phosphodiesterase 4 Inhibitors.

A series of novel pyridazin-6-one-1-acetylhydrazone hybrids were rationally designed to inhibit phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4B). The prepared compounds were evaluated for their in vitro ability to inhibit the PDE4B enzyme; several of these compounds showed moderate activity compared to the reference drug, rolipram. Compounds 6, 12, and 14 emerged as the most potent inhibitors in this series.

Frequency, causes and pattern of abdominal trauma: A 4-year descriptive analysis.

Background: The incidence of abdominal trauma is still underreported from the Arab Middle-East. We aimed to evaluate the incidence, causes, clinical presentation, and outcome of the abdominal trauma patients in a newly established trauma center.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted at the only level I trauma center in Qatar for the patients admitted with abdominal trauma (2008-2011).

ADAM33 and ADAM12 genetic polymorphisms and their expression in Egyptian children with asthma.

Background: The ADAM family is involved in some pathologic processes, such as inflammation and asthma.

Objectives: To assess the association between ADAM33 and ADAM12 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with asthma risk and severity and to investigate the effect of ADAM33 and ADAM12 polymorphisms on expression of these proteases in sputum.

Methods: Two SNPs of the ADAM33 gene, F+1 (rs511898) G/A and ST+4 (rs44707) A/C, and 2 SNPs of the ADAM12 gene, rs3740199 and rs1871054, were analyzed in 400 asthma cases and 200 controls aged 3 to 14 years using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method.
