Background There is ongoing debate regarding the impact of direct-acting antiviral drugs (DAAs) on the occurrence of de novo hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays a crucial role in the development and angiogenesis of HCC. Aim This study aims to evaluate dynamic changes in vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels at different point times during and after treatment of HCV to evaluate the risk of de novo HCC in DAAs-treated HCV patients.

Coumarins, a group of naturally occurring compounds, have been reported to demonstrate anticancer potential. These substances, distinguished by their combined benzene and α-pyrone rings, have been demonstrated to impact multiple cellular mechanisms essential for the initiation and advancement of cancer. These agents work in different ways that prevent different tumor cells from growing, spreading, and increasing.

Background: In a global effort to assess expert perspectives on the use of recombinant gonadotropins, recombinant human luteinizing hormone (r-hLH) and recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone (r-hFSH), a consensus meeting was held in Dubai. The key aim was to address three critical questions: What are the factors that influence follicle response to gonadotropins? Which categories of patients are most likely to benefit from LH supplementation? And what are the optimal management strategies for these patients?

Methods: A panel of thirty-six experts reviewed and refined the initial statements and references proposed by the Scientific Coordinator. Consensus was defined as agreement or disagreement by more than two-thirds (66%) of the panel members for each statement.

Folate receptor alpha (FRα) has emerged as a promising target in the treatment of ovarian cancer, with farletuzumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting FRα, showing potential in clinical settings. This systematic review and single-arm meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of farletuzumab in patients with solid tumors, particularly ovarian cancer. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a thorough search across PubMed, the Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) for clinical trials assessing farletuzumab in solid tumors.

The purpose of this study is to characterize the dynamic response of fluid flow in microchannels, which can show significant delay times before reaching steady flow conditions. Two main sources of these delays are numerically and experimentally investigated, the hydraulic compliance which originates from the flexibility of the system components (microchannel, tubing, syringe, etc.), and the compressibility of the liquid dead volume in the setup, also known as the "bottleneck effect".

Background: Prostate cancer patients undergoing long-term (Androgen deprivation therapy) ADT will tend to have metabolic changes. Metabolic syndrome represents the accumulation of several medical conditions that significantly increase the risk of developing severe diseases like cardiovascular disorders, insulin resistance, and hyperglycemia. We are conducting this systematic review and meta-analysis to fill up the gap and to resolve the debate regarding the effectiveness of metformin in reducing metabolic syndrome associated with ADT in prostate cancer patients.

Objectives: We conducted this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to compare the efficacy of adding metformin to lifestyle interventions versus lifestyle interventions alone in individuals with prediabetes.

Materials And Methods: We searched four databases from inception until March 20, 2024. Our primary outcomes included the incidence of type 2 diabetes, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG).

Article Synopsis
  • Mangiferin is a powerful bioactive compound mainly found in mangoes, known for its potential to prevent and treat various cancers, such as prostate, ovarian, and lung cancer.
  • It works by regulating key signaling pathways and triggering processes that lead to cancer cell death and stopping the cell cycle, which helps control cancer proliferation.
  • Although studies show promising effects against multiple cancer types, more clinical trials are needed to fully understand its benefits and establish its role in cancer prevention and treatment.

It is imperative to explore new biocompatible drugs with low toxicity for use in medicinal fields such as fighting tumors. Bovine lactoperoxidase (BLPO) stems from the most important enzymes in the bovine whey that provide a proper pattern for nano-formulation with nanomaterials. LPO is a suitable protein to be coated or adsorbed to alginate modified graphene oxide (GO-SA), which forms the modified GO-SA-LPO hybrid structure.

A total of 18 heterocyclic derived conjugated dienones (CD1-CD18) were evaluated for their potential monoamine oxidase (MAO)-A/-B inhibitory activity. Among the analyzed molecules, CD11 and CD14 showed notable inhibitory potentials against MAO-B, with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC) values of 0.063 ± 0.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how heavy metals and trace elements (HMTE) contribute to bladder cancer (BC), focusing on mechanisms such as mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and specific protein kinases.
  • - Researchers analyzed samples from 125 BC patients and 72 controls, measuring various heavy metals and assessing genetic markers related to mitochondrial function and oxidative stress using advanced laboratory techniques.
  • - Results revealed that elevated levels of several heavy metals in BC tissues correlated with increased expression of certain genes and markers associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, highlighting the need to reduce exposure to these toxic elements to potentially lower BC risk.

  • - Dipyrone, a strong pain reliever and fever reducer, is still used in many countries despite being banned in some due to serious side effects, and its effectiveness in treating fevers in children compared to ibuprofen is unclear.
  • - The research examined existing studies comparing oral dipyrone and ibuprofen for managing fever in children, using various medical databases to find relevant randomized controlled trials.
  • - The results indicated that there was no significant difference in the effectiveness of dipyrone and ibuprofen for reducing fever in children, showing both medications work similarly in this context.

In autoimmune illnesses like Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), the synovium is constantly inflamed, and joints are ruptured. It is becoming increasingly clear that stem cells, especially notably mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and microRNAs (miRNAs), play important roles in the onset and amelioration of RA. There is mounting evidence from both animal and human studies that suggests a potentially safe and effective method to treat RA and other intractable diseases by reducing chronic inflammation and spurring tissue regeneration through the transplantation of multipotent adult stem cells, such as mesenchymal stromal/stem cells.

Background: Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder that manifests primarily with jaundice and pruritus and can progresses from persistent cholestasis to cirrhosis and late childhood liver failure. Classically, progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis is classified into three subtypes: 1, 2, and 3 and results from a defect in a biliary protein responsible for bile formation and circulation in the liver. In the last decade and with the increased use of genetic testing, more types have been known.

  • Patient-ventilator asynchrony (PVA) is a common issue in mechanically ventilated patients, occurring when their breathing efforts don't align with the ventilator's settings, making effective detection challenging.
  • A study in Alexandria, Egypt, revealed that out of 137 critical care nurses surveyed, most showed poor knowledge (88.1%) and negative attitudes (93.1%) towards using ventilator waveform monitoring for PVA detection.
  • Findings indicated that previous training and education levels significantly influenced nurses' knowledge and attitudes, emphasizing the need for enhanced training in ventilator monitoring techniques.
