Purpose: To present our clinical outcomes in the management of anuria in adult patients caused by ureteral calculi by using of ureteroscopy and holmium laser.

Materials And Methods: Nineteen patients presented with calcular anuria with ages between 19 and 48 years. The presentation was anuria with serum creatinine levels of 2-5.

Impact of short term use of interdialytic 60% ethanol lock solution on tunneled silicone catheter dysfunction.

Introduction: Ethanol lock (EL) is used to reduce catheter infections, but its impact on dialysis catheter dysfunction has not been studied.

Methods: We analyzed the rate of dialysis silicone catheter dysfunction after an interdialytic 60% EL in an open prospective controlled non crossover cohort study, with each patient being his or her own control. The study was divided into three consecutive 2-week periods: the pre- and post-intervention periods, in which interdialytic standard locks (SL) were used, and the intervention period, in which one EL was instilled during the first week, and two consecutively in the second week.

Multifocal electroretinogram in retinal vein occlusion.

Purpose: To determine the effects of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) on multifocal electroretinogram (MF-ERG) parameters, to correlate MF-ERG and standard electroretinogram (ERG) and to correlate MF-ERG with findings of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in cases of RVO.

Methods: Both eyes of 50 patients with RVO and 50 eyes of 25 normal subjects were examined using MF-ERG, standard ERG, fluorescein angiography and OCT. The latency in millisecond (ms) and response density in nanovolt (nv/degenerations) were measured for each of four quadrant areas and central area.

Uptake of nicotine from suspension culture of Nicotiana tabacum by molecularly imprinted polymers.

Objectives: The aim was to use molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for the selective recovery of nicotine in plant cell cultures. MIPs can selectively uptake nicotine from suspension cultures of N. tabacum, and therefore may be useful for improving levels of secondary metabolites in plant cell cultures.

Terpenes and flavonoids from an Egyptian collection of Cleome droserifolia.

Four new sesquiterpene derivatives have been isolated from the aerial parts of Cleome droserifolia. Their structures were established as 6-di(7-hydroxy, 1, 5-epoxy germacrane) (2), 4(15)-guaiane-6-ol (3), 7alpha-germacra-1(10), 4(15)-diene-5beta, 6alpha-diol (4) and 4,7,8-eudesma-triol (5). In addition, a new dolabellane diterpene derivative with the naturally rare peroxy function was identified as methyl ester of 2,18-O-diacetyl-16-O-(3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl)-7-hydroperoxydolabella-3,8(17)diene-2,16,18 triol (7).

Preliminary pharmacological study of the pterocarpans macckian and trifolirhizin isolated from the roots of Ononis vaginalis.

Preliminary pharmacological study was conducted for the pterocarpans macckian (Mac) and trifolirhizin (Trif). Dry hot air: is it a reliable method of disinfection for urological endoscopes? Preliminary study.

Objectives: To evaluate dry hot air effect as a reliable method of disinfection of urological endoscopes.

Methods: Two groups of urological endoscopic instruments (2 cystoscopic sheaths, 2 bridges, and 2 working elements of resectoscope and urethrotome for each group), after being sterilized by full immersion in 2% glutaraldehyde solution for 10 hours, were contaminated by immersion in suspensions of Staphylococcus saprophyticus (3 x 10(3) CFU/mL), Escherichia coli (28 x 10(2) CFU/mL), and Candida albicans (27 x 10(2) CFU/mL). Group I was exposed to disinfection by full immersion in 2% glutaraldehyde solution for 20 minutes.

Hepatoprotective constituents from Cleome droserifolia.

The effect of ethanol extract from aerial parts of Cleome droserifolia was investigated against carbon tetrachloride induced liver injury. The hepatoprotective activity was evaluated through the quantification of biochemical parameters and confirmed using histopathology analysis. Efficient hepatoprotective effect was achieved by crude extract, fractions and some pure compounds.

A new 3-arylcoumarin from the roots of an Egyptian collection of Lotus polyphyllos.

Further investigation of different fractions from Lotus polyphyllos Clarke roots resulted in the isolation of the new 3-arylcoumarin derivative; 4',6'-dihydroxy-7, 2'-dimethoxy-3-arylcoumarin (5). In addition, the known compounds beta-sitosterol, 1-hexacosanol (1), n-tetracosyl p-coumarate (2), 4'-O-methylderrone (4), and quercetin (6) were identified. The structures were determined from spectroscopic data including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments.

Study of factor VII, tissue factor pathway inhibitor and monocyte tissue factor in noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

Changes in plasma tissue factor (TF)-activated factor VII (FVIIa) and plasma tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) in type II diabetes mellitus are assessed, vascular complicated and noncomplicated patients compared, and whether these novel hemostatic activity markers predict vascular complications in diabetic patients, improving risk assessment, is determined. Fifty type II diabetic patients and 20 healthy controls (age, sex and body mass matched) underwent medical history and examination, fasting plasma glucose level, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid profile, hemostatic parameters, plasma TF activity, and TFPI and TF expression on blood monocytes. Mean TF, TF activity, TFPI, and FVIIa significantly increased among hyperlipidemic compared with normolipidemic diabetic patients, and normolipidemic diabetic patients compared with controls.

Changes in nasal aesthetics following nasal bone manipulation.

Nasal bone fractures are the commonest type of bony facial injury causing aesthetic deformity. The aim of this study was to identify the effect of nasal trauma and fracture manipulation on the aesthetic proportions of the nose, by comparing pre- and post-treatment nasal aesthetics. Thirty-two patients (26 men and 6 women) underwent aesthetic assessment prior to treatment of the injury by closed nasal manipulation, 7 to 10 days after the initial injury.

Endoscopic control of the sphenopalatine artery for epistaxis: long-term results.

The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate post-operative cessation of bleeding and late recurrence of epistaxis in a cohort of patients treated by endoscopic ligation of the sphenopalatine artery. Participants comprised patients undergoing sphenopalatine artery ligation for posterior epistaxis at three east Scotland hospitals. Main outcome measures were recurrence of epistaxis in the immediate post-operative period and at long-term follow up (minimum nine months).

Purpose: Bladder neck preservation during radical prostatectomy has been advocated for improving urinary continence. We evaluate bladder neck preservation looking at continence rates, surgical cancer control and bladder neck contracture.

Materials And Methods: A total of 40 patients underwent retropubic radical prostatectomy for clinically localized carcinoma of the prostate.

Two new isoflavone derivatives from the roots of an Egyptian collection of Lotus polyphyllos.

Investigation of the roots of Lotus polyphyllos Clarke resulted in the isolation of two new isoflavone derivatives; 4'-O-methylerythrinin C (3) and 4'-O-methyl-2''-hydroxydihydroalpinumisoflavone (4). In addition, the three known isoflavone derivatives 4'-O-methylalpinumisoflavone (1) lupinalbin F (5), 4',7-dimethoxy-5-hydroxyisoflavone (6), and the phenylpropanoid ester tetracosyl p-coumarate (2) were also identified. The structures were determined from spectroscopic data.

Iridoid glucosides from Kickxia abhaica D.A. Sutton from Scrophulariaceae.

Two iridoid glucosides namely; 6-acetylantirrinoside (1), 6'-O-p-hydroxybenzoylantirrinoside (2) were isolated from the aerial parts of Kickxia abhaica. Beside that, three known iridoid glucosides, antirrinoside (3), antirride (4) and mussaenosidic acid (5), one flavone glycoside (6) and a hexitol, d-mannitol (7) were isolated. The structures of the iridoid glucosides 1-2 were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectral data, including COSY, HMQC and HMBC experiments, as well as HRMS.

Aesthetic proportions of the nasal aperture in 3 different racial groups of men.

Objective: To define baseline aesthetic dimensions of the nasal aperture in 3 different racial groups.

Methods: Healthy volunteers from 3 different racial groups (15 white, 15 Chinese, and 15 Indian men) were enrolled in the study at the Department of Otolaryngology, University of Dundee, Dundee, Scotland. Those with a history of nasal or facial surgery or trauma were excluded from the study.

Prospective evaluation of the value of direct referral hearing aid clinic in management of young patients with bilateral hearing loss.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the value and effectiveness of a direct referral hearing aid clinic (DRHAC) in providing appropriate hearing aids to young patients aged 18-60 years while at the same time identifying patients with significant ear disease who need an otologist's opinion. The patients were referred to a tertiary referral hearing assessment clinic. A total of 137 patients (18-60 years) met the criteria to be included in the study to be assessed in the clinic by both an audiometrician and an otologist.

Study of solar photosensitization processes on dermatophytic fungi.

The antifungal activity of solar simulator was evaluated in presence of haematoporphyrin derivative (HPD), methylene blue (MB) and toluidine blue O (TBO) as photosensitizers. Seven dermatophytes were used as test fungi. The solar simulator at fluence rate 400 W/m2 for 30 minutes induced marked inhibition for spore germination of the photosensitized fungi.

Three prenylated flavonoid derivatives; 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-8-(3"'-methylbut-2"'-enyl)-6-(2"-hydroxy-3"-methylbut-3"enyl) isoflavone (isoerysenegalensein E), 5,7,2'-trihydroxy-4'-methoxy-5'-(3"-methylbut-2"-enyl) isoflavanone (lysisteisoflavanone), 5, 4'-dihydroxy-6-(3"'-methylbut-2"'-enyl)-2"-hydroxyisopropyl dihydrofurano [4",5":8,7] isoflavone (isosenegalensin), together with the four known flavonoids abyssinone V-4'-methylether, alpinumisoflavone, wighteone and burttinone were isolated from the stem bark of Erythrina lysistemon Hutch. (Leguminosae). Structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods.

Early discharge following nasal pack removal: is it feasible?

A prospective study of 50 consecutive patients admitted for nasal packing for epistaxis reveals that only 20% re-bled after removal of packs and that 96% of those recurrences occurred during the first 4 h after pack removal. No patients required repacking or blood transfusion. The need for a 24-h observation period following nasal pack removal therefore appears not to be required, and the implementation of an early discharge policy for patients treated for epistaxis by nasal packing is therefore potentially feasible, and would result in significant cost savings.
