Effect of bee pollen on growth performance, carcass traits, blood parameters, and the levels of metabolic hormones in New Zealand White and Rex rabbits.

The aim was to evaluate the effect of bee pollen (BP) on performance, blood parameters, and metabolic hormones in New Zealand White (NZW) and Rex (RX) rabbits. A total of 60 six-week-old rabbits were allotted into a completely randomized design in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement (two breeds and three levels of BP: 0, 250, and 350 mg/kg body weight). The effects of breed × BP supplementation level were non-significant for all growth performance and carcass traits, as well as the concentrations of metabolic hormones in the plasma.

Serum adipokines and vitamin D levels in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Introduction: Adiponectin, leptin and resistin are adipokines that play important roles in the regulation of lipid and carbohydrate metabolism in type 2 diabetes (T2DM). However, their influence in type 1 diabetes mellitus is still unknown. The aim of this study was to measure serum adiponectin, leptin and resistin levels and to investigate their relationships with vitamin D and other clinical and laboratory parameters in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Effect of supplementing broiler chicken diets with green tea extract on the growth performance, lipid profile, antioxidant status and immune response.

A trial was conducted to explore the effect of feeding graded concentrations of green tea extract (GTE; 125, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg) on the growth performance, serum lipid profile, liver glutathione-reduced, thigh muscle malondialdehyde and humoral immune response against Newcastle disease virus vaccines of broiler chickens from hatching to 42 d of age. The results of broilers fed on GTE were contrasted to those fed on butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT; 125 mg/kg) or unsupplemented controls. The obtained results revealed no significant difference among treatments in the measured growth performance parameters (body weight, average daily gain, average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio), per cent liveability and serum lipid profile (total lipid, total cholesterol, high-density, low-density and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterols).

Chicken growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is a receptor for ghrelin (GHRL), a peptide hormone produced by chicken proventriculus, which stimulates growth hormone (GH) release and food intake. The purpose of this study was to search for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in exon 2 of GHSR gene and to analyze their effect on the appetite, growth traits and expression levels of GHSR, GHRL, and GH genes as well as serum levels of GH and GHRL in Mandara chicken. Two adjacent SNPs, A239G and G244A, were detected in exon 2 of GHSR gene.

Background: Vitamin D3 (VD3 ) levels have been recently found to be responsible for a number of immunological, anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious roles. Some studies reported that some forms of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS), occurs more commonly in patients who are more susceptible to VD3 deficiency. The aim of this work was to measure VD3 levels in patients with AFRS and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).

Introduction: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a highly heterogeneous disease, with biologically and prognostically different subtypes.

Aim: To study the impact of p53, p21, and mdm2 gene polymorphisms on the clinical outcome in adult AML patients treated at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) - Cairo University.

Methods: Forty-eight adult AML patients presented to the Medical Oncology Department, NCI, from April 2010 till November 2011.

Prognostic significance of WT1 expression at diagnosis and end of induction in Egyptian adult acute myeloid leukemia patients.

Background: Wilms' tumor (WT1) gene overexpression has been reported in the majority of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients at diagnosis and has been evaluated as prognostic and minimal residual disease (MRD) marker.

Patients And Methods: WT1 overexpression was evaluated in 68 adult AML patients at diagnosis and at the end of induction using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Results: No significant associations were encountered between WT1 overexpression at diagnosis and other prognostic factors.

Background: Following gene expression profiling which compared the two well established prognostic markers in CLL, ZAP-70 and CD38 with unmutated and mutated IgVH, ZAP-70 has emerged as the most promising surrogate marker for the IgVH mutation status. CD38 expression has also been suggested as a surrogate marker for the IgVH mutation status.

Prognostic factors of Hodgkin's lymphoma and their impact on response to chemotherapy and survival.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the standard prognostic factors of Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) in relation to response to first line chemotherapy, disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS).

Patients And Methods: The study was performed on a group of 100 adult patients diagnosed as HL and who were treated and followed-up in the years 1999 to 2001, in the Medical Oncology Department at National Cancer Institute (NCI), Cairo. The first line chemotherapy was COPP in 40%, ABVD in 35% and COPP/ABV hybrid in 25%.

Exercise and diet in obesity treatment: an integrative system dynamics perspective.

Purpose: Demonstrate the utility of System Dynamics computer modeling to study and gain insight into the impacts of physical activity and diet on weight gain and loss.

Methods: A holistic System Dynamics computer model is presented that integrates the processes of human metabolism, hormonal regulation, body composition, nutrition, and physical activity. These processes are not independent of one another, and the model captures the complex interdependencies between them in the regulation of body weight and energy metabolism.

Antibodies to certain arboviruses in humans from a flooded village in Egypt.

A study was carried out on 180 sera collected from inhabitants of a seepage flooded village (Begiram) in a Nile Delta governorate in Egypt. The aim of the study was to monitor the prevalence of certain arboviruses; some of them are known to be endemic in Egypt. Sera were screened by ELISA except for the HTN by IF, and the results indicated that WN and SFS exhibited the highest prevalence 45.

In vitro interaction between clindamycin and trimethoprim in combination on staphylococci.

The in-vitro interaction between clindamycin and trimethoprim was tested on 10 staphylococcal clinical isolates by the checkerboard technique and by the time-kill curve. Indifference was demonstrated against seven of these strains and antagonism against three. The clindamycin/trimethoprim combination is of no value if the purpose of the combination is to obtain synergy against staphylococci.

Re-evaluation of the value of ascitic fluid pH lactate dehydrogenase and total proteins in the diagnosis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP).

In view of high mortality, variable clinical presentation, and late results of bacterial culture, early diagnosis of SBP and treatment are based on indirect parameters of infection. Forty-two patients with ascites and liver cirrhosis were studied. Ascitic fluid (AF) was examined for total protein content, pH, lactate dehydrogenase, amylase, absolute polymorphonuclear cell count (PMN) and for presence of bacteria by examining a fresh smear of the deposit and culture of the fluid under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
