Cross sectional study was done on a total 100 individuals; 50 patients diagnosed with NAFLD (based on ultrasound imaging) crossed-matched with 50 individuals without NAFLD based on age, sex and body mass index.

Background: Macrophage activation syndrome is classified as a secondary form of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. It is a hyperinflammatory complication observed to be comorbid with a variety of autoimmune diseases, including adult-onset Still's disease and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Macrophage activation syndrome is less commonly detected in adult patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, which, if untreated, can be fatal, though determining the optimum treatment strategy is still a challenge.

Hearing impairment is a reported complication of sickle cell disease, yet inner ear pathology is not fully understood. The study purpose was to examine the patterns of inner ear involvement in patients with sickle cell disease by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to assess its association with auditory functions. A cross-sectional study included 22 children with sickle cell disease examined for inner ear pathology by audiogram, MRI inner ear and transcranial Doppler (TCD) with revision of their hospital records for transfusion, chelation and hydroxyurea (HU) therapy.

Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma presenting as a metastasis to the brain.

The brain is a particularly rare site of metastasis from papillary microcarcinoma, with only few cases described in the literature. We present a case of 59-year-old man who presented with seizures and dysphasia due to left frontal lobe cystic mass, which was excised and turned out on histopathology to be of thyroid origin. Total thyroidectomy was performed and histology showed multifocal papillary microcarcinoma with the largest focus of 3mm with no other adverse features.

Influence of common clinical variables on intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring during surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism.

Background: Intraoperative monitoring of parathyroid hormone (IOPTH) is a reliable method of predicting the cure of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). The aim of this study is to assess whether common clinical variables (CCV) frequently encountered in patients with PHPT may affect the magnitude of PTH drop or the likelihood of patients meeting the intraoperative cure criterion.

Design: Patients who were surgically cured from PHPT caused by single gland disease (SGD) and had full IOPTH protocol (4 measurements) were stratified according to age, gland weight, renal function, vitamin D status and severity of hypercalcemia.

Absent pericardium and lung hypoplasia in a child with severe mitral regurgitation.

An 8-year-old girl with severe mitral regurgitation presented with symptoms of heart failure. Clinical investigations did not raise suspicion of an absent left pericardium. Congenital defects of the pericardium are rare and frequently associated with other cardiac lesions.
