Microbial confrontation is ubiquitously present in nature, such as mycoparasitism, competition and antibiosis between biocontrol agents and microbial pathogens. However, the internal metabolic responses of fungal pathogens under microbial interaction scenario have been scarcely investigated. In this study, we set up an integrated mycotoxin analysis and non-targeted metabolomics workflow to decipher metabolic changes of Alternaria pathogens when confronted with selected Trichoderma strains, as well as mycotoxin metabolization in the Trichoderma spp.

Background & Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an emerging epidemic; it is a negative diagnosis that depends mainly on the presence of hepatic steatosis with or without inflammation after the exclusion of other chronic liver diseases and excess alcohol intake. However, the new definition of MAFLD is a shift towards a diagnosis of inclusion based on the presence of metabolic dysfunction, regardless of alcohol consumption or other concomitant liver diseases. Given the growing relevance of the disease, data on hepatologists' views and understanding of NAFLD are limited, we aimed to determine hepatologists' awareness and expertise of NAFLD screening, diagnosis, and therapeutic options as well as the influence of changing the NAFLD name to MAFLD on awareness of the fatty liver disease (FLD).

Dietary lipids, highly lipophilic drugs, antigens and immune cells are transported from the intestine to the mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) via mesenteric lymphatic vessels. Recently our lab reported that the mesenteric lymphatic vessels become highly branched and leak lymph to the surrounding mesenteric adipose tissue (MAT) in mice and humans with obesity, promoting insulin resistance. This study aimed to investigate the impact of obesity-associated mesenteric lymph leakage on the trafficking of a dietary lipid (oleic acid), lipophilic drug (cyclosporin A) and antigen (ovalbumin) from the intestine to MLNs.

Precise quantification of microcystins (MCs) in freshwater is crucial for environmental monitoring and human health. However, the preparation of traditional multi-sample external calibration curve (MSCC) is time consuming and prone to error. Here, a novel one-point calibration strategy including one sample multi-point calibration curve (OSCC) and in sample calibration curve (ISCC) is proposed for the quantitation of eight MCs in freshwater lakes using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed patients who underwent top-down HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) for recurrent benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), comparing outcomes between those with prior surgeries (group I) and without (group II).
  • A total of 269 patients were included, with no significant differences in the preoperative characteristics or operative outcomes between the two groups.
  • Postoperative follow-up showed significant improvements in urinary function for both groups over 12 months, and the procedure was deemed safe, indicating prior prostate surgery does not negatively impact outcomes with HoLEP.

The functional luminal imaging probe (FLIP) utilizes high-resolution planimetry to provide information regarding esophagogastric junction (EGJ) diameter, EGJ distensibility, and reactive contractile patterns of the esophageal body. This is an FDA-approved measurement tool utilized to both diagnose and measure various upper gastrointestinal disorders. While patients are sedated during FLIP panometry, significant respiratory variations can affect the quality of FLIP panometry results.

Despite available technology and the knowledge that chemical pollution damages human and ecosystem health, chemical pollution remains rampant, ineffectively monitored, rarely prevented, and only occasionally mitigated. We present a framework that helps address current major challenges in the monitoring and assessment of chemical pollution by broadening the use of the sentinel species as a diagnostic agent of water pollution. And where prevention has failed, we propose the application of as a bioremediation agent to help reduce hazards from chemical mixtures in the environment.

During the pandemic, the rate of healthcare facility-onset methicillin-resistant (MRSA) bacteremia was 5 times greater in patients admitted with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The presence of central lines and mechanical ventilation likely contribute to this increased rate. The number of central-line-associated bacteremia cases may be underestimated in patients with COVID-19.
