Despite global commitments to achieving gender equality and improving health and wellbeing for all, quantitative data and methods to precisely estimate the effect of gender norms on health inequities are underdeveloped. Nonetheless, existing global, national, and subnational data provide some key opportunities for testing associations between gender norms and health. Using innovative approaches to analysing proxies for gender norms, we generated evidence that gender norms impact the health of women and men across life stages, health sectors, and world regions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares perioperative characteristics and outcomes between primary ileocolonic resection (PICR) and iterative ileocolonic resection (IICR) in patients with Crohn's disease from 2013 to 2015, analyzing data from 567 patients.
  • It was found that patients undergoing IICR were less malnourished and presented with more stricturing forms of the disease but had a higher rate of non-infectious complications like postoperative ileus.
  • Despite a slight increase in non-infectious morbidity for IICR patients, the overall severe complications were similar between IICR and PICR, indicating that IICR remains a viable option for recurrent Crohn's disease.

Biomedical advances in the past decade have aimed to capitalize on two movements that have dominated the research conversation: precision medicine and the ascent of big data. These emerging shifts have resulted in growing confidence that we can better characterize health, predict who will get ill and with what, develop new treatments which exploit genetic, metabolic, and other vulnerabilities in cancers and infectious agents, and tailor some of these treatments to match characteristics of the individual patient and their specific disease. However, we suggest that there are important cautions.

Preeclampsia is the most frequent pregnancy-related complication worldwide with no cure. While a number of molecular features have emerged, the underlying causal mechanisms behind the disorder remain obscure. Here, we find that increased complex formation between angiotensin II AT1 and bradykinin B2, two G protein-coupled receptors with opposing effects on blood vessel constriction, triggers symptoms of preeclampsia in pregnant mice.

A common post-operative complication of many operations is seroma formation, which, while generally considered to be relatively minor, can be problematic for patients and a drain on healthcare resources due to the need for frequent outpatient reviews and repeated aspirations. Several mechanisms have been implicated in the development of seromas, and drains have traditionally been used as a preventative strategy. However, drains are falling out of favour, not least because the evidence to support their use is limited and conflicting.

Article Synopsis
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis involves abnormal collagen buildup in the lungs, causing serious breathing issues and death, with oxidative stress thought to contribute to its development.
  • The study investigated the role of glutaredoxin-1 (GLRX) and protein S-glutathionylation (PSSG) in lung fibrosis using human and mouse models, revealing decreased GLRX activity and increased PSSG levels in fibrotic lungs.
  • Results showed that enhancing GLRX activity, either by inhibiting oxidative inactivation or through administration of GLRX, reduced fibrosis and suggests that GLRX could be a promising treatment for this lung disease.
