Background: The Mobility Scale for Acute Stroke Patients (MSAS) was developed to discriminate between the lower levels of mobility in acute stroke patients in the first two weeks post-onset.

Objective: The present study aims to develop and validate an Italian version of the MSAS.

Methods: The English version of the MSAS was translated into Italian according to international guidelines.

Analysis of sarcopenic obesity prevalence and diagnostic agreement according to the 2022 ESPEN and EASO Consensus in hospitalized older adults with severe obesity.

Background: Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is a clinical disorder characterized by increased adiposity and decreased muscle mass and function, commonly observed in older adults. However, most of the studies that investigated SO prevalence rates were not based on current standardized diagnostic methods. Thus, this study aims to estimate the prevalence rates of SO and their level of agreement using different instruments proposed by the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) Consensus, in a sample of hospitalized older adults with severe obesity.

Cognitive profile in a young woman with Susac syndrome: a case report.

Susac syndrome is a rare immune-mediated endotheliopathy affecting the microvasculature. It presents three main symptoms: encephalopathy, branch retinal artery occlusions, and hearing loss . Here we present a new case report focusing on the evolution of the cognitive profile.

Brain imaging studies have recently provided some evidence in favor of covert cognitive processes that are ongoing in patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) (e.g., a minimally conscious state and vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome) when engaged in passive sensory stimulation or active tasks such as motor imagery.

Psychological Distress in Patients Who Needed Invasive versus Non-Invasive Ventilation Following SARS-CoV-2 Viral Infection.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the mental health of those who survived the illness but underwent long treatment and hospitalization. Much research has highlighted signs of emotional distress in those who experienced intensive care, and the procedures implemented to fight the infection. The present study investigated the effects of the illness experience in 40 subjects admitted to a rehabilitation unit after discharge from intensive care by focusing on the possibility of differences in emotional well-being depending on the type of ventilation.

"Communicative competence assessment of the person with aphasia caregiver: Standardization of the ACCA-CHECKLIST".

Aphasia constitutes a very complex clinical entity that requires a "competent" caregiver to interact with the person with aphasia (PWA). The literature lacks a valid and reliable set of standardized tools which can offer objective and quantifiable data of a caregiver's communicative competence. The aim of the study was to develop, standardize and validate an evaluation tool suited to measur the caregivers' competence in communicating with family members affected by aphasic disorders.

Development and Feasibility of an Adolescent Dancer Screen.

Background: Adolescent dancers are at high risk for injuries due to the physical demands of dance training and the physiological changes that occur during adolescence. Though studies report high injury rates, there are few standardized screening tools available for adolescent dancers.

Hypothesis/purpose: To develop and describe a standardized, feasible, evidence-based, and clinically relevant screen for adolescent dancers.

Prediction of resting energy expenditure in Italian older adults with severe obesity.

Background: In the last decade a large number of studies proposed and/or validated equations to estimate the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) in adults and/or older adults, however, no equation currently available showed good accuracy for older adults with severe obesity. Thus, this study aimed to develop and validate new predictive equations for REE, based on data from the indirect calorimetry, in Italian older adults with severe obesity.

Methods: A retrospective study was as conducted with 764 Caucasian older adults with severe obesity (age range: 60-74 years and BMI ≥ 35 kg/m/²).

This study aimed to investigate the effects of combined training (COMB, a combination of moderate-intensity continuous training-MICT and high-intensity interval training-HIIT) vs. continuous MICT administered during a 3-week in-hospital body weight reduction program (BWRP) on body composition, physical capacities, and substrate oxidation in adolescents with obesity. The 3-week in-hospital BWRP entailed moderate energy restriction, nutritional education, psychological counseling, and two different protocols of physical exercise.

Persistent dysexecutive syndrome after pneumococcal meningitis complicated by recurrent ischemic strokes: A case report.

Background: Meningitis is a possible complication of pneumococcal infection concerning acute otitis media and sinusitis. It might compromise cognitive function, both for the infection itself and the vascular events that sometimes follow the acute phase.

Case Summary: Here we describe the case of a 32-year-old female patient admitted to the emergency room due to extensive pneumococcal meningitis as a consequence of sinus outbreak.

Differences in spinal posture and mobility between adults with obesity and normal weight individuals.

The aim of this study was to cross-sectionally investigate the relationships between obesity and spinal posture as well as mobility by comparing the spinal parameters between adults with obesity and normal-weight individuals. The spinal parameters were measured in 71 adults with obesity and 142 normal-weight individuals using a radiation-free back scan, the Idiag M360. Differences in spinal posture and movements between the two groups were determined using a two-way analysis of variance.

Measured vs estimated resting energy expenditure in children and adolescents with obesity.

Pediatric obesity requires early targeted interventions consisting mainly of a low-calorie diet prescribed based on resting energy expenditure (REE), often estimated through predictive equations. The aim of this study was to define the prevalence of "hypo-", "normo-" and "hypermetabolic" in a large cohort of children and adolescents with obesity by comparing measured and estimated REE and to evaluate the characteristics related to these metabolic statuses in both males and females. The study population was divided into the three subgroups by comparing REE measured using indirect calorimetry and estimated using the Molnar equation, and subsequently analyzed.

Survey on the usage of therapeutic erythrocytapheresis in transfusion services in Italy for the treatment of polycythemia vera, secondary erythrocytosis and hemochromatosis.

Introduction: Erythrocytapheresis, an apheresis treatment which selectively removes red blood cells, is an alternative to therapeutic phlebotomy, over which it has several advantages. Actually there is a high degree of variability in the use of this treatment. This prompted SIdEM (Italian Society of Hemapheresis and Cell Manipulation) to conduct a survey on the use of erythrocytapheresis in the Italian Transfusion Services.

Background: Actinic cystitis is a severe complication after radiotherapy for prostate cancer. It is a chronic inflammatory process that leads to an alteration of bladder mucosa with formation of petechiae and subsequently hematuria. Actinic cystitis responds poorly to medical treatment, with a heavy burden on patients' quality of life.

The impact of cognitive function deficits and their recovery on functional outcome in subjects affected by ischemic subacute stroke: results from the Italian multicenter longitudinal study CogniReMo.

Background: The recovery of independence in activities of daily living is a fundamental goal of rehabilitation programs in subjects affected by subacute stroke. Rehabilitation is focused both on motor and cognitive aspects, and some evidence has reported cognitive deficits as prognostic factors of motor recovery. However, rehabilitation is a dynamic process during which executive functions and motor functions should be improved.

Physical Therapist Management of Glenohumeral Joint Osteoarthritis: A Clinical Practice Guideline from the American Physical Therapy Association.

A clinical practice guideline on glenohumeral joint osteoarthritis was developed by an American Physical Therapy Association volunteer guideline development group that consisted of physical therapists, an occupational therapist, and a physician. The guideline was based on systematic reviews of current scientific and clinical information and accepted approaches for physical therapist management of glenohumeral joint osteoarthritis. This clinical practice guideline is available in Spanish; see Supplementary Appendix 8.

Cognition in COVID-19 infected patients undergoing invasive ventilation: results from a multicenter retrospective study.

A growing number of scientific contributions suggest that COVID-19 infection can lead to impairment of cognition, mainly in executive functions and memory domains, even in the absence of frank neurological pathologies.The primary objective of this retrospective study is to evaluate the frequency and type of inefficiencies in a selection of cognitive tests administered to a sample of subjects who, following infection, required invasive assisted ventilation and were admitted to rehabilitation wards for the treatment of functional impairment.Fifty-seven subjects were enrolled.

Effect of a 3-Week Multidisciplinary Body Weight Reduction Program on the Epigenetic Age Acceleration in Obese Adults.

Obesity and aging share common molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which occur frequently in both conditions. DNA methylation (DNAm) age, a biomarker of the epigenetic clock, has been proposed as a more accurate predictor of biological aging than chronological age. A positive difference between an individual’s chronological age and DNAm age is referred to as epigenetic age acceleration.

Principal Component Analysis of Oxford Cognitive Screen in Patients With Stroke.

Cognitive deficits occur in most patients with stroke and are the important predictors of adverse long-term outcome. Early identification is fundamental to plan the most appropriate care, including rehabilitation and discharge decisions. The Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS) is a simple, valid, and reliable tool for the assessment of cognitive deficits in patients with stroke.

A literature search was performed on four online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science) for articles published from January 1st 2001 till March 20th 2021, using a combination of free words and Medical Subject Headings (MESH) terms: "Composite Resins" AND "Color Stability" OR "Staining.

Becoming an anti-racist interprofessional healthcare organization: Our journey.

The COVID-19 pandemic amplified the egregious disproportionate burden of disease based on race, ethnicity, and failure of organizations to address structural racism. This paper describes a journey by members of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) who came together to address diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Through collaborative efforts, a virtual, interactive workshop was designed and delivered at NAP's 2021 Virtual Forum to facilitate discussions about DEI priorities across professions and to initiate a sustainable action plan toward achieving inclusive excellence.
