Are EU member states ready for the European Health Data Space? Lessons learnt on the secondary use of health data from the TEHDAS Joint Action.

The proposal for a regulation on the European Health Data Space (EHDS) contains provisions that would significantly change health data management systems in European member states (MS). This article presents results of a country mapping exercise conducted during the Joint Action 'Towards the European Health Data Space' (TEHDAS) in 2022. It presents the state-of-play of health data management systems in 12 MS and their preparedness to comply with the EHDS provisions.

Assessing European national health information systems in peer review format: lessons learnt.

Background: Systematic assessments of a country's health information system (HIS) help identify strengths and weaknesses and may stimulate actions for improvement. They represent a capacity-building process for the country assessed as well as for the assessor. The joint action on HISs (InfAct) developed a peer-to-peer assessment methodology adapting an established WHO support tool.

Surgical rhinoplasty after prior hyaluronic acid based nose remodeling.

Background: Medical rhinoplasty by hyaluronic acid injection (HA) has become nowadays a common practice. The number of patients requesting surgical rhinoplasty and having already undergone one or more injections of HA is increasing. However, the literature lacks publications regarding the management of these patients.

The emergence of subjects in Lebanese two-year-olds.

In Lebanese Arabic, lexical subjects may occur before or after verbs, but only before non-verbal predicates. Analysis of spontaneous language samples from 19 two-year-old children shows that postverbal (VS) and preverbal (SV) subjects emerge simultaneously. The youngest children displayed no VS-SV difference in frequency.

Socioeconomic profile, animal care, sanitary practices, and knowledge about parasites among owners of domestic dogs and cats treated in Rio de Janeiro city.

Urban canine and feline populations are expanding worldwide, a fact that can boost the transmission of zoonotic parasites. Thus, it is necessary understanding dog and cat owners' profile, as well as their perceptions about zoonoses, to develop preventive strategies based on the One Health approach. The aim of the current study is to compare the profile of dog and cat owners, whose domestic pets were treated at Jorge Vaitsman Veterinary Medicine Center, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The InfAct proposal for a sustainable European health information infrastructure on population health: the Distributed Infrastructure on Population Health (DIPoH).

Background: In Europe, data on population health is fragmented, difficult to access, project-based and prone to health information inequalities in terms of availability, accessibility and especially in quality between and within countries. This situation is further exacerbated and exposed by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The Joint Action on Health Information (InfAct) that builds on previous works of the BRIDGE Health project, carried out collaborative action to set up a sustainable infrastructure for health information in the European Union (EU).

EU health information progress: the harvest of policy supporting projects and networks.

Background: The European Commission supports the initiation of health information related projects and networks serving comparative population health monitoring and health system performance assessment. Many of these projects and networks have produced relevant data, standards, methods, indicators and knowledge that may be lost as these networks become inactive. The aim of this project retrieval and review was to identify health information projects and networks and their produced output; and subsequently facilitate systematic access to this information for policy makers, researchers and interested others via a web-based repository.

Integrating technical and political views for a sustainable European Distributed Infrastructure on Population Health.

Background: Non-Communicable diseases (NCD) are the main contributors to mortality and burden of disease. There is no infrastructure in Europe that could provide health information (HI) on Public Health monitoring and Health Systems Performance (HSP) for research and evidence-informed decision-making. Moreover, there was no EU and European Economic Area Member States (EU/EEA MSs) general consensus, on developing this initiative and guarantee its sustainability.

Mapping European research networks providing health data: results from the InfAct Joint Action on health information.

Background: Research networks offer multidisciplinary expertise and promote information exchange between researchers across Europe. They are essential for the European Union's (EU) health information system as providers of health information and data. The aim of this mapping exercise was to identify and analyze EU research networks in terms of health data collection methods, quality assessment, availability and accessibility procedures.

Intestinal parasites and risk factors in dogs and cats from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The urban populations of pets, mainly dogs and cats, have been growing in recent years and, consequently, human-animal relationships have become increasingly closer. However, pets are vulnerable to infection by various parasites, as well are their owners due to the zoonotic potential of these agents. This study aimed to assess the frequency and risk factors of intestinal parasites in dogs and cats attended at the Municipal Institute of Veterinary Medicine Jorge Vaitsman, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as well as georeferencing the parasitized animals.

Making the case for strong health information systems during a pandemic and beyond.

Background: The Sars-CoV-2 pandemic exacerbates existing inequalities across health care systems globally, both within countries and between countries. It also highlights, like no other crisis before, existing weaknesses in health information systems (HIS). This article summarizes these key challenges for HIS in times of a pandemic and beyond, with a focus on European countries.

Mandibular neurofibroma: Case report of a rare tumor.

Neural tumors localized in jaw bone are relatively rare. This article presents a case of intraosseous neurofibroma of the mandible in a 37-year-old female patient. A review of clinical, radiographic, histological features and surgical management of the patient are discussed along with a review of the literature.

How can we monitor the impact of national health information systems? Results from a scoping review.

Background: National health information (HI) systems provide data on population health, the determinants of health and health system performance within countries. The evaluation of these systems has traditionally focused on statistical practices and procedures, and not on data use or reuse for policy and practice. This limits the capacity to assess the impact of HI systems on healthcare provision, management and policy-making.

Age of acquisition of 299 words in seven languages: American English, Czech, Gaelic, Lebanese Arabic, Malay, Persian and Western Armenian.

We present a new set of subjective Age of Acquisition (AoA) ratings for 299 words (158 nouns, 141 verbs) in seven languages from various language families and cultural settings: American English, Czech, Scottish Gaelic, Lebanese Arabic, Malaysian Malay, Persian, and Western Armenian. The ratings were collected from a total of 173 participants and were highly reliable in each language. We applied the same method of data collection as used in a previous study on 25 languages which allowed us to create a database of fully comparable AoA ratings of 299 words in 32 languages.

Cost-effectiveness of routine and campaign use of typhoid Vi-conjugate vaccine in Gavi-eligible countries: a modelling study.

Background: Typhoid fever is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in low-income and middle-income countries. In 2017, WHO recommended the programmatic use of typhoid Vi-conjugate vaccine (TCV) in endemic settings, and Gavi, The Vaccine Alliance, has pledged support for vaccine introduction in these countries. Country-level health economic evaluations are now needed to inform decision-making.

Thermal burn in a 30-minute-old newborn: report on the youngest patient with iatrogenic burn injury.

Burns in infants are rare. The majority of neonatal burns occur in the hospital setting. The immaturity of their immune system, their fragile and thin skin, difficulties in resuscitation, engraftment paucity limited by donor sites, and long-term complications make taking care of burned newborns extremely difficult.

Case report and review of literature: coronary artery fistulae.

Coronary artery fistula (CAF) is a rare disease. In more than 90 percent of cases, a single fistula drains into the right heart chambers or into the pulmonary artery. Fistulae draining into the left ventricle are uncommon; further, multiple CAF involving the three major coronary artery vessels are very rare.

The utility of dynamic magnetic resonance venography in the setting of pelvic venous pathology.

The standard initial noninvasive imaging modality for diagnosing May-Thurner syndrome is duplex ultrasound, but this modality provides only indirect measures and is frequently limited, necessitating further imaging to make the diagnosis. Other noninvasive imaging modalities (computed tomographic venography, time of flight, magnetic resonance venography) allow for direct visualization but lack hemodynamic and anatomic information about what is occurring throughout the cardiac cycle. Intravascular ultrasound is the invasive tool of choice in the setting of iliac vein compression syndrome, but quality, noninvasive imaging modalities have yet to be described.

Reducing the volume of antibiotic prescriptions: a peer group intervention among physicians serving a community with special ethnic characteristics.

Background: Antibiotics are a front-line weapon against many infectious diseases. However, antibiotic overuse is the key driver of drug resistance. Previously published studies have suggested benefits of using peer-to-peer education, working with group leaders to build trust and maintain confidentiality within a quality initiative.
