In this study, we quantify the absolute levels of over 100 nutrients available across multiple tissues in mice and investigate how this relates to the ability of breast cancer cells to grow in different organs. Importance: Machine learning tools are increasingly deployed for risk prediction and clinical decision support in surgery. Class imbalance adversely impacts predictive performance, especially for low-incidence complications.
Objective: To evaluate risk-prediction model performance when trained on risk-specific cohorts.
Objectives: The study evaluated the feasibility of implementing Dementia Collaborative Coaching (DCC) into the routine workflow of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working in nursing homes (NHs). DCC is an intervention delivered by SLPs to train nursing assistants (CNAs) in communication strategies to support people living with dementia (PLWD).
Methods: We assessed the feasibility of identifying eligible PLWD; estimated intervention fidelity; evaluated suitability of outcome measures; and determined the preliminary impact on behavioral and psychological symptoms of distress (BPSD) among PLWD.

Method: PAL Cards provide at-a-glance information about a nursing home (NH) resident's background and important preferences for activities and leisure. As a quality improvement project, 11 NHs implemented use of PAL Cards in their communities and provided feedback ( = 91 feedback forms received) on their perceptions of impact of PAL Cards on care communication and delivery.
Mathematical models of biochemical reaction networks are an important and emerging tool for the study of cell signaling networks involved in disease processes. One promising potential application of such mathematical models is the study of how disease-causing mutations promote the signaling phenotype that contributes to the disease. It is commonly assumed that one must have a thorough characterization of the network readily available for mathematical modeling to be useful, but we hypothesized that mathematical modeling could be useful when there is incomplete knowledge and that it could be a tool for discovery that opens new areas for further exploration.

Methods: A retrospective population-wide observational study in Manitoba, Canada, was conducted using administrative claims data from the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy to examine the incidence and prevalence of OUD (methadone, buprenorphine-naloxone, buprenorphine) or AUD medications (naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram) per 10,000 individuals in each quarter between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2021.
Results: There were 1179 and 451 individuals who received at least one prescription for OUD and AUD, respectively, in the first quarter of 2020.
Background: The term vocal demand response refers to how speakers meet vocal demands. Vocal loading tasks with predetermined demand parameters (duration, pitch, loudness, etc) have been used in research to study the vocal demand response; these have historically consisted of loud sustained vowel and loud speech tasks. Tasks founded on laryngeal diadochokinesis (LDDK) may be viable alternatives, especially if demand parameters such as exercise-rest ratio and fluid back pressure are concurrently modulated.

Background: In a fair system, overtriage of low-acuity patients to intensive care units (ICUs) and undertriage of high-acuity patients to general wards would affect all sociodemographic subgroups equally.
Methods: This multicenter, longitudinal cohort study of hospital admissions immediately after major surgery compared hospital mortality and value of care (risk-adjusted mortality/total costs) across 4 cohorts: overtriage (N = 660), risk-matched overtriage controls admitted to general wards (N = 3077), undertriage (N = 2335), and risk-matched undertriage controls admitted to ICUs (N = 4774).
Person or patient-centered care (PCC) is touted as the gold standard in geriatric medical care across care settings. However, despite more than 3 decades of research and practice initiatives, it remains a challenge to consistently implement PCC that fully places the individual at the center of care planning and the delivery process. The lack of universal implementation of PCC, we argue, may be in large part due to the use of multiple terms and ideologies leading to an inability to coordinate efforts across medical settings.

Here, we find that nucleotide depletion and DNA replication stress drive differentiation in human and murine normal and transformed hematopoietic systems, including patient-derived acute myeloid leukemia (AML) xenografts. These cell state transitions begin during S phase and are independent of ATR/ATM checkpoint signaling, double-stranded DNA break formation, and changes in cell cycle length.
