Background: In this study it was aimed to determine the adherence of Pseudomonas and Candida to contact lens surfaces, and to determine the difference in adherence between five contact lens types. Biofilm-negative control strains were also used to emphasize the difference between biofilm-positive and biofilm-negative strains in adherence.
Methods: Five different soft contact lenses were used to investigate the adherence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans strains.
Microdilution method that determines the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of antifungal agents against Candida spp. is still the only method used in laboratories for both biofilm and planktonic forms. However, it was determined in several studies that there were susceptibility differences between the biofilm and planktonic forms of the same microorganism.

In this study, a new series of 2,5-disubstituted benzoxazoles was synthesized and their structures were elucidated by elemental analysis, MASS, (1)H-NMR, (13)C-NMR and IR spectral data. Newly and previously synthesized 2,5-disubstituted benzoxazole derivatives were evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activity against standard strains and their drug-resistant isolates. Microbiological results showed that the compounds presented a large spectrum of activity having MIC values of 250-7.

The variations of swelling percentages with time and pH were determined for these hydrogels at 37 degrees C. PAAmIA was found as the most swollen hydrogel at pH 4.

In a prior study we showed that the chloroform extract of Cistus laurifolius had a potent anti-ulcer activity. It has been known that there is a causal relationship between peptic ulcer and Helicobacter pylori infection.

It also aimed to determine the effect of particle size on the penetration properties of Famotidine when microsphere formulations were used. Famotidine was chosen as a model drug and Caco-2 cell culture model was used.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFungal infections are among the major causes of morbidity in cancer patients. In order to optimize the treatment of such patients, it is critical to determine the type of fungus causing infection as well as its susceptibility to antifungals. This study was undertaken to the study resistance of Candida spp.

The effect of sodium taurocholate as a penetration enhancer when it was added to the liposome formulation was also investigated. In vitro permeation experiments were performed in diffusion cells with the Caco-2 cell monolayer used as the membrane.

A series of 22 benzimidazoles, having several substituents on the azole and benzene nuclei, were prepared and evaluated in vitro for antimicrobial activity. At first 2-chloro or 2-chloromethyl-5(6)-substituted-1H-benzimidazoles were synthesized, which were then substituted at C-2 with several piperazine or piperidine derivatives. The antibacterial activity of these compounds against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Candida stellatoidea, Candida parapsilosis, and Candida pseudotropicalis were determined as the MIC values.

The effect of local irrigation of the gingival sulcus, which is considered an important source of bacteremia following dental procedures, with three different antiseptic solutions including hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine and povidone iodine, on the frequency of bacteremia after tooth extraction was determined, and the efficacies of the three antiseptics were compared. Although all the antiseptic solutions reduced the frequency of bacteremia to various degrees, povidone iodine was the most effective, and seemed to be the best choice since the decrease was statistically significant. Local administration of antiseptic solutions is therefore recommended as an adjuvant to systemic antibiotic prophylaxis.
