Peripheral nerve injury has become an increasingly prevalent clinical concern, causing great morbidity in the community. Although there have been significant advancements in the treatment of peripheral nerve damage in recent years, the issue of long-term nerve regeneration remains. Furthermore, Wallerian degeneration has created an obstacle to long-term nerve regeneration.

Relative efficacy of five common weeds-of the kind that are either rooted in soil or which freely float over water-was assessed in rapid, effective and sustainable treatment of sewage at pilot plant scale in the recently developed and patented SHEFROL bioreactors. The plants were utilized in a unit of capacity 12,000 liters/day (LPD) which, after two years of use, was enlarged to handle 40,000 LPD of sewage. It was then further expanded after an year to treat 57,000 LPD.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how physical activity (PA) affects cardiovascular disease (CVD) and psychological health, particularly focusing on stress-related brain activity.
  • It found that increased PA is linked to lower stress-related neural activity and a reduction in CVD events, with these effects being more pronounced in individuals with depression.
  • The results suggest that engaging in PA may help decrease CVD risk partly by reducing stress impacts on the brain, especially for those suffering from depression.

Fire can be especially dangerous when it occurs in hospitals because many patients in any typical hospital are not physically fit enough to quickly respond to emergency measures, especially evacuation calls. The present paper reports an in-depth assessment of the factors which have led to major fire accidents in Indian hospitals. The study reveals that several building safety codes, acts and guidelines are available, not only to prevent accidental fires but also to minimize harm when such fires do take place.

Introduction: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the metacestode of Echinococcus granulosus. CE is a health problem in Middle Eastern countries, such as Iran. The purpose of this study was to purify subunit 8 KDa antigen B from crude sheep hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) and compare its sensitivity and specificity with a commercial human ELISA kit (PT-Hydatid-96).

Background: Epidural hematoma is one of the most common surgical emergencies encountered in neurosurgery. This study was conducted to determine the mortality and prognostic factors in patients operated for traumatic intracranial epidural hematoma in a resource-constrained setting from a developing country.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Neurosurgery at Ayub Teaching Hospital Abbottabad from 1st January 2019 to 31st Dec 2021.

Objectives: To investigate the associations between county-level proportions of adults not engaging in leisure-time physical activity (no LTPA) and age-adjusted cardiovascular mortality (AACVM) rates in the overall US population and across demographics.

Methods: Analysing 2900 US counties from 2011 to 2019, we used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) databases to obtain annual AACVM rates. No LTPA data were sourced from the CDC's Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System survey and county-specific rates were calculated using a validated multilevel regression and poststratification modelling approach.

Several cities in the developing world, of which the capital city of India, New Delhi, is an example, often experience air quality in which pollutant levels go way above the levels considered hazardous for human health. To bring down the air quality to within permissible limits quickly, the measures typically taken involve shutting down certain high-polluting activities for some time to enable the air quality to recover temporarily. This paper presents a first-ever model based on artificial neural networks to forecast the extent of reduction in air quality parameters that can be achieved and the time period within which a change can be experienced when the source of the emissions is cut off temporarily.

Background: Excessive bleeding is common and can be life-threatening in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Existing conventional methods for preventing bleeding are ineffective or impractical; thus, additional strategies are required. This study used the autologous platelet-rich plasma fibrin-glue (PRP-FG) as a topical hemostatic and tissue regenerative agent to evaluate its preventive effect in postoperative bleeding in off-pump CABG surgery anastomosis.

Background: Chronic stress associates with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) via increased stress-related neural network activity (SNA). Light/moderate alcohol consumption (AC) has been linked to lower MACE risk, but the mechanisms are unclear.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the association between AC and MACE is mediated by decreased SNA.

As reported recently by the present authors, vermicomposting by the epigeic earthworm transforms the highly ligninous and allelopathic aquatic weed salvinia () into a benign organic fertilizer. The present study was carried out with four other earthworm species, including three epigeic species of different sizes and phytophagic habits: and . One anecic species, with geophytophagous habits, was also explored for comparison: .

Background: Evidence on performance of Rapid Antigen Detection Tests to recognize SARS-CoV-2 symptomatic patients in our context is limited. This study was aimed to evaluate Panbio™ COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device (Abbott Diagnostics, Jena, Germany) in identifying SARS-CoV-2 infection in comparison with RT-PCR test.

Methods: This cross-sectional validation study was carried out at Margalla Hospital, Taxila from October, 2020 to March, 2021.

The paper describes the setting up and long-term continuous operation of the first real-life, pilot scale, sewage treatment plant based on the recently patented phytoremediation technology, trademarked as SHEFROL. The unit was about three times cheaper to install, operate and maintain than the least expensive of the other wetland-based technologies presently in vogue. Its semi-permanent version is 30 times cheaper.

Background: Air pollution and noise exposures individually associate with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) via a mechanism involving arterial inflammation (ArtI); however, their combined impact on ArtI and MACE remains unknown. We tested whether dual (vs. one or neither) exposure associates with greater ArtI and MACE risk and whether MACE risk is mediated via ArtI.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how different molecular subgroups of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), identified through tumor genomic data, may respond differently to PD-(L)1 immunotherapy using computational biological modeling (CBM).
  • Researchers analyzed data from 776 NSCLC patients, identifying eight molecular subgroups and evaluating their sensitivity to PD-(L)1 immunotherapy based on various genomic and immunological markers.
  • The findings indicate that CBM can predict immunotherapy responses and provide insights into the underlying mechanisms, with a strong correlation found between modeled survival data and actual patient outcomes in a small clinical cohort.

Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (RIRI) as a pathological process induces remote organ injury such as lung complications and it is regulated in a hormone-dependent manner. This study investigates the effect of estrogen on RIR-induced pulmonary injury in ovariectomized (OV) rats. A total of 60 female Wistar rats were divided into six groups: () intact sham, () OV sham, () OV sham + estradiol valerate (E), () intact ischemia, () OV ischemia, and () OV ischemia + E.

Aims: Activity in the amygdala, a brain centre involved in the perception of and response to stressors, associates with: (i) heightened sympathetic nervous system and inflammatory output and (ii) risk of cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that the amygdalar activity (AmygA) ratio is heightened among individuals who develop Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), a heart failure syndrome often triggered by acute stress. We tested the hypotheses that (i) heightened AmygA precedes development of TTS and (ii) those with the highest AmygA develop the syndrome earliest.
