A pilot-scale assessment of five common weeds in the sustainable treatment of sewage utilizing SHEFROL, with prospects of a closed-loop biorefinery.

Relative efficacy of five common weeds-of the kind that are either rooted in soil or which freely float over water-was assessed in rapid, effective and sustainable treatment of sewage at pilot plant scale in the recently developed and patented SHEFROL bioreactors. The plants were utilized in a unit of capacity 12,000 liters/day (LPD) which, after two years of use, was enlarged to handle 40,000 LPD of sewage. It was then further expanded after an year to treat 57,000 LPD.

An Analysis of Failures Leading to Fire Accidents in Hospitals; with Specific Reference to India.

Fire can be especially dangerous when it occurs in hospitals because many patients in any typical hospital are not physically fit enough to quickly respond to emergency measures, especially evacuation calls. The present paper reports an in-depth assessment of the factors which have led to major fire accidents in Indian hospitals. The study reveals that several building safety codes, acts and guidelines are available, not only to prevent accidental fires but also to minimize harm when such fires do take place.

Introduction: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the metacestode of Echinococcus granulosus. CE is a health problem in Middle Eastern countries, such as Iran. The purpose of this study was to purify subunit 8 KDa antigen B from crude sheep hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) and compare its sensitivity and specificity with a commercial human ELISA kit (PT-Hydatid-96).

Mortality And Prognostic Factors In Patients Operated For Acute Epidural Hematoma.

Background: Epidural hematoma is one of the most common surgical emergencies encountered in neurosurgery. This study was conducted to determine the mortality and prognostic factors in patients operated for traumatic intracranial epidural hematoma in a resource-constrained setting from a developing country.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Neurosurgery at Ayub Teaching Hospital Abbottabad from 1st January 2019 to 31st Dec 2021.

Lack of leisure time physical activity and variations in cardiovascular mortality across US communities: a comprehensive county-level analysis (2011-2019).

Objectives: To investigate the associations between county-level proportions of adults not engaging in leisure-time physical activity (no LTPA) and age-adjusted cardiovascular mortality (AACVM) rates in the overall US population and across demographics.

Methods: Analysing 2900 US counties from 2011 to 2019, we used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) databases to obtain annual AACVM rates. No LTPA data were sourced from the CDC's Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System survey and county-specific rates were calculated using a validated multilevel regression and poststratification modelling approach.

AI-based prediction of the improvement in air quality induced by emergency measures.

Several cities in the developing world, of which the capital city of India, New Delhi, is an example, often experience air quality in which pollutant levels go way above the levels considered hazardous for human health. To bring down the air quality to within permissible limits quickly, the measures typically taken involve shutting down certain high-polluting activities for some time to enable the air quality to recover temporarily. This paper presents a first-ever model based on artificial neural networks to forecast the extent of reduction in air quality parameters that can be achieved and the time period within which a change can be experienced when the source of the emissions is cut off temporarily.

Autologous platelet-rich plasma fibrin-glue reduces bleeding after coronary artery bypass grafting, a randomized clinical study.

Background: Excessive bleeding is common and can be life-threatening in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. Existing conventional methods for preventing bleeding are ineffective or impractical; thus, additional strategies are required. This study used the autologous platelet-rich plasma fibrin-glue (PRP-FG) as a topical hemostatic and tissue regenerative agent to evaluate its preventive effect in postoperative bleeding in off-pump CABG surgery anastomosis.

Renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (RIRI) as a pathological process induces remote organ injury such as lung complications and it is regulated in a hormone-dependent manner. This study investigates the effect of estrogen on RIR-induced pulmonary injury in ovariectomized (OV) rats. Aims: Activity in the amygdala, a brain centre involved in the perception of and response to stressors, associates with: (i) heightened sympathetic nervous system and inflammatory output and (ii) risk of cardiovascular disease. We hypothesized that the amygdalar activity (AmygA) ratio is heightened among individuals who develop Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), a heart failure syndrome often triggered by acute stress. We tested the hypotheses that (i) heightened AmygA precedes development of TTS and (ii) those with the highest AmygA develop the syndrome earliest.
