Therapeutic efficacy of sorafenib and plant-derived phytochemicals in human colorectal cancer cells.

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the sequence-dependent anticancer effects of combined treatment with sorafenib (Sora), a Food and Drug Administration-approved multikinase inhibitor drug, and plant-derived phytochemicals (PPCs) on human colorectal cancer (CRC) cell growth, and proteins associated with the control of cell cycle and apoptosis.

Methods: The cytotoxic effects of 14 PPCs on CRL1554 fibroblast cells were determined using an MTT assay. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of Sora, PPCs, and a combination of both on CRC cells were also investigated.

Objectives: Palpation of the extrinsic laryngeal muscles is a common part of examination performed by otolaryngologists and speech-language pathologists on individuals presenting with voice complaints, thought to aid in diagnosis and treatment planning. While research has identified a significant relationship between thyrohyoid tension and hyperfunctional voice disorders, we are not aware of any studies exploring correlations between thyrohyoid posture during palpation and the full spectrum of voice disorders. This study aims to identify whether patterns in thyrohyoid posture at rest and during phonation can be related to stroboscopic findings and voice disorder diagnoses.

The primary goals of this cross-sectional study were to screen various food/water, and human samples for the presence of Salmonella species, and to assess the phenotypic and genetic relationship between resistances found in food and human Salmonella isolates to critically important antibiotics. Between November 2019 and May 2021, 501 samples were randomly collected for Salmonella isolation and identification using standard culturing methods, biochemical, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and PCR techniques. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed on confirmed Salmonella species, and PCR was used to investigate the genetic components that confer these resistance traits.

Inferior epigastric artery (IEA) injury is a rare clinical entity that is usually associated with abdominal wall procedures and injuries though can also be spontaneous, particularly in individuals with coagulopathy. Of all described mechanisms of injury, percutaneous peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter insertion is a rarely encountered, particularly in instances where insertion is performed under imaging guidance. While this injury is self-limited, it can be associated with hemodynamic instability and acute blood loss anemia, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Endovascular embolization for managing a massive shoulder arteriovenous malformation.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are congenital high flow pathologic linkages between arteries and veins of different sizes that may occur in any part of the body. The clinical presentation is largely dependent on the size and location of AVMs and can range from an asymptomatic birthmark to congestive heart failure in extreme cases. In this report, we describe a 20-year-old male who presented with a large AVM of the right shoulder that resulted in significant cosmetic and physical impairment and treated with several sessions of endovascular embolization with good clinical outcomes.
