Breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in the United States, with an increasing incidence in recent years. Paraneoplastic syndromes are uncommon but increasingly recognized complications of many types of cancer, including breast cancer. Here, we describe a case of a patient presenting with confounding symptoms, who was diagnosed with breast cancer and believed to have a paraneoplastic syndrome despite a negative paraneoplastic panel.

Simple and novel nuclease models have been synthesized. These involve metal-binding ligand 1,4,7,10-tetraazlcyclododecane (cyclen) tethered to an acridine ring (a DNA-binding group) by amide linkers of various lengths. Binding of these probes to DNA was studied by monitoring changes in their UV-visible spectra affected by the presence of DNA.

Three structurally related sets of hydroisobenzofuran analogs of sclerophytin A were prepared in three or four steps from (S)-(+)-carvone via an aldol-cycloaldol sequence. The most potent members of each set of analogs exhibited IC(50)'s of 1-3 microM in growth inhibitory assays against KB3 cells. The NCI 60-cell line 5-dose assay for analog 6h revealed a GI(50)=0.

A combination of (ROMP) ring-opening metathesis polymerization and diradical (diyl) cross-linking provides a new access to hard biomaterials and potential artificial bone replacements. ROMP was used to construct soft and pliable linear polymers bearing photolabile diazene functions. After treatment with light, a nitrogen aerosol is released throughout the polymer to create desirable porosity, cross-linking, and hardening in a single step.
