Traditional versus virtual interviews: A perspective of paediatric dentistry program directors and residents.

Background: COVID-19 pandemic restrictions necessitated changes in conduct of the interview process for the selection of candidates in paediatric dentistry residency programs.

Aims: To examine the experiences and attitudes of paediatric dentistry program directors and residents regarding the virtual interview process during the 2020/2021 application cycle.

Design: A survey was sent to 82 directors and 416 postdoctoral members of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry with data collected from individuals interviewed during the 2020/2021 cycle.

Cognitive flexibility training for chronic pain: a randomized clinical study.

Introduction: Previous studies suggest an association between cognitive flexibility and development of chronic pain after surgery. It is not known whether cognitive flexibility can be improved in patients with chronic pain.

Objectives: This study tested whether a neurocognitive training program results in improved cognitive flexibility and pain in patients with chronic pain.

Ascertaining Design and Implementation Requirements for a Perioperative Neurocognitive Training Intervention for the Prevention of Persistent Pain After Surgery.

Background: Persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP) is a common complication that impacts quality of life, often necessitating long-term opioid treatment. Certain neurocognitive factors, including reduced performance on cognitive flexibility tasks, are associated with increased risk of PPSP. We examine the perceptions of surgical patients and clinicians with regard to perioperative pain management activities and needs; patient acceptance and use of a perioperative neurocognitive training intervention; and implementation feasibility.

Building a Collaborative Culture: Focus on Psychological Safety and Error Reporting.

Background: At a Midwestern academic medical center, we introduced a structured teamwork training program to cardiothoracic operating room members with a goal of greater than or equal to 90% reporting positive psychological safety after the program.

Methods: We conducted teamwork training over 3 months. We distributed confidential questionnaires before the training, and then at 6 months and 12 months after the training.

Cognitive flexibility and persistent post-surgical pain: the FLEXCAPP prospective observational study.

Background: Impaired performance on tasks assessing executive function has been linked to chronic pain. We hypothesised that poor performance on tests assessing the ability to adjust thinking in response to changing environmental stimuli (cognitive flexibility) would be associated with persistent post-surgical pain.

Methods: We conducted a single-centre prospective observational study in two perioperative cohorts: patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty or noncardiac chest surgical procedures.

Introduction: The importance of effective communication, a key component of teamwork, is well recognised in the healthcare setting. Establishing a culture that encourages and empowers team members to speak openly in the cardiothoracic (CT) operating room (OR) is necessary to improve patient safety in this high-risk environment.
