Less is more? Ultra-low carbohydrate diet and working dogs' performance.

New Zealand farm working dogs are supreme athletes that are crucial to agriculture in the region. The effects that low or high dietary carbohydrate (CHO) content might have on their interstitial glucose (IG) and activity during work are unknown. The goals of the study were to determine if the concentration of IG and delta-g (a measurement of activity) will be lower in dogs fed an ultra-low CHO high fat diet in comparison to dogs fed a high CHO low fat diet, and to determine if low concentrations of IG are followed by reduced physical activity.

Sharing Ideas and Practice: Institutional Partnership Influences Change in Approaches to Teaching to Enhance Veterinary Education in Vietnam in Conjunction with an OIE Veterinary Education Twinning Project.

A World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Veterinary Education Twinning Project was established between the veterinary schools at Nong Lam University (NLU) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and the University of Queensland, Gatton, Australia, as part of the scheme established to promote high-quality veterinary services through improved veterinary education. Included in the partnership's primary aims were building the capacity of veterinary teaching staff with respect to general teaching practice and also in response to identified deficiency areas, and to develop outcome assessment processes. One challenge facing the project was the different approaches and experiences of teaching and learning for the faculty and students between the two widely different historical and cultural contexts of Australia and Vietnam.

Comparison of a continuous indwelling glucometer with a point-of-care device in healthy adult horses.

Background: Blood glucose is tightly regulated in horses; however, since hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia are associated with poor prognosis, close monitoring is warranted. This study aimed at evaluating a continuous indwelling glucometer (CIG) by comparing performance with a point-of-care glucometer (POC).

Methods: Ten horses were equipped with CIG and an intravenous catheter.

Cytokine Expression in Canine Lymphoma, Osteosarcoma, Mammary Gland Tumour and Melanoma: Comparative Aspects.

Cytokines released in the tumour microenvironment play a major role in cancer pathogenesis. In human cancers and corresponding animal models, cytokine expression contributes to tumour growth and progression, as well as regulation of the host anti-tumour response. The elucidation of the function and importance of cytokines in canine cancers is still in an early stage, although relevant data have been obtained in classical examples of comparative models of human cancers, such as osteosarcoma, melanoma, mammary tumour and lymphoma.

Morel-Lavallée lesions: a phenomenon in cats? Case report and review of the literature.

Case Summary: A 3-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat sustained a severe sacrococcygeal luxation post-motor vehicle trauma. Six days post-trauma, a fluid-filled swelling was noticed over the caudoventral abdomen and inguinal regions. Needle aspiration, closed suction drain placement and debridement with subcutaneous tacking were all attempted but failed to resolve the continued accumulation of serosanguinous lymphocyte-rich fluid in the subcutaneous pocket.

Testicular neoplasia in the retained testicles of an intersex male dog.

This case describes the presentation and management of an 8 yr old phenotypically female intersex male dog presented for evaluation of a mass in the right inguinal region. The right inguinal space was surgically explored, and a large irregular mass resembling a fully developed testicle was identified in the right vaginal tunic. A second mass resembling an atrophied, but anatomically mature testicle, was identified in the left tunic.
