Objectives: To examine female representation in US News and World Report (USNWR) top 25 US Urology departments and identify trends of female representation in institutional roles.

Methods: Using the 2022 USNWR, we collected data from each institution's websites along with a compared geographically local cohort to evaluate the presence of female residents, female attendings, and professorial levels. First or last author faculty publications numbers were found using PubMed and Scopus in fiscal year 2022.

The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had widespread implications on various aspects of life; however, there is a paucity of longitudinal data regarding its impact on sexual behavior. To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on changes in frequency of sexual activity and partner dynamics in the United States, we utilized data from the General Social Survey (GSS). This biannual survey of adults in the United States, provided responses from 12,791 participants, enabling a comparative analysis of sexual behaviors between pre-COVID-19 (2016 and 2018, n = 5215 respondents) and COVID-19 periods (2021 and 2022, n = 7576 respondents).

Bibliometric analyses serve to identify influential articles that have shaped medical practice and fostered new research ideas. Over the past decade, research in andrology has witnessed exponential growth, with an increasing number of academic publications, collaborations, and research innovations. However, there is a lack of literature that has identified the top-cited andrology articles.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to investigate the association between major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and clinical factors of patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC) for bladder cancer.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis using the 2015-2020 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was performed on patients who underwent RC for bladder cancer. MACE was defined as any report of cerebrovascular accident, myocardial infarction, or thromboembolic events (pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis).

Objective: To characterize prevalence and severity of pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) in various health care settings and to examine unmet health-related social needs (HRSN) among minority women.

Materials And Methods: Minority women with PFDs were recruited from our academic urogynecology clinic, a general urology clinic at our institution's safety net hospital, and a community outreach mobile clinic. Questions from the Urinary Distress Index-6, Pelvic Organ Prolapse Distress Inventory-6, and Female Genitourinary Pain Index were used to identify patients with stress urinary incontinence, overactive bladder (OAB), and chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS).

Objective: Seasonal variations in testosterone levels have been reported in some studies, but the results are inconsistent. In this study, we aimed to determine if clinically relevant seasonal variability in testosterone levels exists using a large cohort of men from 2 different institutions, 1 located in an area with seasons (Pittsburgh, Pa) and 1 without seasons (Miami, Fla).

Methods: Using 2 institutional databases, testosterone levels were obtained for men ages 18-99 from 2010 to 2021 who had at least 2 morning testosterone levels drawn within a 2-year period.

Objective: To utilize a large cohort of healthy sperm bank donors to evaluate the association between body mass index and individual sperm parameters.

Methods: Sperm parameters from donors across the United States were obtained between 2013 and 2022. Donors were healthy men aged 18-46years old.

Introduction And Objective: The long-term outcomes of varicocelectomy in adolescents is debated. The aim of this study was to evaluate symptom improvement, hypogonadism, and paternity in those who underwent adolescent sub-inguinal microscopic varicocelectomy.

Material And Methods: A retrospective chart review was done of adolescents (median=19, interquartile range (IQR)=16-19.

Objective: To investigate clinical risk factors associated with postoperative deep incisional or organ/space surgical site infections (SSI) following radical cystectomy (RC) in a well characterized and large contemporary cohort.

Methods: We used the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database to identify adult patients who underwent RC for bladder cancer between 2015 and 2020 (n = 13,081). We conducted multivariable-adjusted logistic regression and Cox adjusted proportional hazards regression analysis to identify clinical predictors of deep incisional or organ/space SSI in the 30-day postoperative-period following RC.

Introduction: Iodine-125 brachytherapy is an effective eye-sparing treatment for uveal melanoma. Previous work has shown that uveal melanomas cluster into distinct molecular classes based on gene expression profiles - discriminating low-grade from high-grade tumors. Our objective was to identify clinical and molecular predictors of local recurrence (LR) and progression-free survival (PFS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates high attrition rates among female and underrepresented minorities (URM) in Urology residency programs, expecting similar trends as seen in General Surgery.
  • Data from the Association of American Medical Colleges covering 2001-2016 was analyzed, showing that female residents have significantly higher odds of leaving the program compared to males, as well as older residents.
  • The findings emphasize the need for systemic changes in Urology training to create more inclusive environments and improve retention of diverse residents.

Purpose Of Review: Semen analysis serves as the initial step in the evaluation of male infertility. However, given the difficulty in interpreting abnormal findings, physicians and patients often struggle with understanding the results. In this review, we aim to review the normal physiology of ejaculation and create an accessible resource for interpreting abnormal semen volume, viscosity, liquefaction, pH, appearance, and color.

Background: Previous cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have described decreasing testosterone levels with age in men, without consideration of acquired comorbidities in aging males.

Aim: We evaluated the longitudinal association between age and testosterone levels as well as the impact of several comorbidities on this relationship using multivariate panel regression analysis.

Methods: Participants were selected from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.

Purpose: We sought to determine the association between socioeconomic factors, procedural costs, and postoperative complications among patients who underwent sacrocolpopexy.

Methods: The 2016-2017 US National Inpatient Sample from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project was used to identify females > 18 years of age with an ICD10 diagnosis code of apical prolapse who received open or laparoscopic/robotic sacrocolpopexy. We analyzed relationships between socioeconomic factors, procedural costs, and postoperative complications in these patients.

Prescriptions for testosterone therapy (TT) to treat testosterone deficiency have increased in recent years. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the risks of several treatment modalities to better counsel patients. Both short-acting and long-acting TT has been shown to restore normal serum testosterone levels and improve symptoms of testosterone deficiency.

Purpose: To evaluate the risk of urinary incontinence (UI) after various prostate enucleation procedures (PEP).

Methods: PubMed was searched from January 2000 to July 2021 for studies investigating UI after PEP. The articles were divided into 5 subgroups: holmium, thulium, greenlight laser, electrocautery, and simple prostatectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines the effects of brachytherapy, a treatment for medium-sized uveal melanomas, focusing on identifying factors that predict radiation toxicities (RTT) such as radiation maculopathy and optic neuropathy.
  • A retrospective review of 258 patients treated between 2011 and 2019 revealed significant associations between RTT and factors like shorter distance to fovea, exudative retinal detachment, and vitreous hemorrhage.
  • The research highlights that female patients and those with higher tumor height are at greater risk for specific complications, providing valuable prognostic information for counseling patients undergoing treatment.

The prevalence of both obesity and hypogonadism in the United States has increased over the past two decades. While prior studies have shown an association between obesity and secondary hypogonadism-low testosterone and luteinizing hormone-few have used a large enough sample size to determine prevalence at each body mass index class. We aimed to compare rates of secondary hypogonadism among body mass index classes by constructing a retrospective database with men who had their body mass index, morning testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels measured during a visit to a urology clinic at a tertiary academic medical center between 2011-2020.
