Article Synopsis
  • - Fetal growth restriction, or intrauterine growth restriction, involves decreased growth of a fetus and is linked to higher risks of problems after birth.
  • - Current guidelines recommend delivering the baby once signs of fetal distress appear, as the primary cause is usually uteroplacental insufficiency.
  • - Researchers are exploring the use of artificial ex utero systems to provide better nutrition and replicate the uterine conditions for affected fetuses, with successful studies in sheep suggesting potential benefits, though more research is needed before testing in humans.

: We sought to identify in which clinical scenarios 3D printed models are used to plan for fetal surgeries as well as the main purpose and the imaging method utilized for the models. In addition, we describe benefits and shortcomings of the models, as well as potential future improvements. : In this scoping review, data were collected retrospectively from scientific databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINAHL, Scopus, and the Web of Science platform) and screened by title, abstract, and full text against strict criteria.

Background: Previous studies have shown improved survival for patients treated at American College of Surgeons (ACS)-verified level I trauma centers compared with level II, level III, and undesignated centers. This mortality difference is more pronounced in severely injured patients. However, a survival benefit for severely injured trauma patients has not been established at teaching institutions compared with nonteaching centers.

Objective: To investigate the mechanical properties of 23-, 25-, and 27-gauge vitrectomy vitrectors across 3 different vitrectomy systems to inform surgical techniques.

Design: An experimental study that did not involve any human subjects.

Methods: Nine vitrectors (3 each of 23-, 25-, and 27 gauge) from Alcon, Dutch Ophthalmic Research Center (DORC), and Bausch & Lomb (B/L) were measured.

Objectives (a) Update previous descriptions of trends in ASSB; (b) determine if factors previously associated with ASSB are replicated by updated data; and (c) generate new hypotheses about the occurrence of ASSB and racial inequalities in ASSB mortality. Methods National Center for Health Statistics files (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Edition) Code W75 to describe race-ethnicity-specific ASSB occurrence. Results (a) ASSB mortality continues to increase significantly; for 1999-2016, 4.
