Article Synopsis
  • Proteins are filtered from blood by the glomerular filtration barrier and then reabsorbed by proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs), which create tubular protein reabsorption droplets (TPRDs) from these proteins.
  • A study analyzing 109 kidney biopsies found a negative correlation between albumin TPRDs and proteinuria, while positive correlations were observed between proteinuria and IgG TPRDs and acute tubular necrosis (ATN).
  • The findings suggest that healthy PTECs are crucial for managing protein levels in urine, as their effectiveness declines with conditions like ATN, leading to increased proteinuria.

Computational pathology has witnessed considerable progress in the development of both task-specific predictive models and task-agnostic self-supervised vision encoders. However, despite the explosive growth of generative artificial intelligence (AI), there have been few studies on building general-purpose multimodal AI assistants and copilots tailored to pathology. Here we present PathChat, a vision-language generalist AI assistant for human pathology.

Background: Appropriate host-microbe interactions are essential for enteric glial development and subsequent gastrointestinal function, but the potential mechanisms of microbe-glial communication are unclear. Here, we tested the hypothesis that enteric glia express the pattern recognition receptor stimulator of interferon genes (STING) and communicate with the microbiome through this pathway to modulate gastrointestinal inflammation.

Methods: In situ transcriptional labeling and immunohistochemistry were used to examine STING and IFNβ expression in enteric neurons and glia.

Background & Aims: Enteric glial cells express type II major histocompatibility complex (MHC-II) molecules in Crohn's disease and Chagas disease, but it is unclear whether the expressed molecules are functional. We examined the capabilities of enteric glia to act as an antigen-presenting cell in vivo and whether glial MHC-II has immunomodulatory effects.

Methods: We generated Sox10;IAB mice to ablate MHC-II in enteric glia after exposure to tamoxifen.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a network of neurons and glia that controls ongoing gastrointestinal (GI) functions. Damage or injury to the ENS can lead to functional GI disorders. Current data support the conclusion that many functional GI disorders are caused by an imbalance between gut microbes and the immune system, but how the ENS is involved in these interactions is less understood.

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is activated in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) by hypoxia and regulates genes important for tissue repair. Whether HIF-1α is activated in HSCs after acute injury and contributes to liver regeneration, however, is not known. To investigate this, mice were generated with reduced levels of HIF-1α in HSCs by crossing HIF-1α floxed mice with mice that express Cre recombinase under control of the glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) promoter (i.

We have carried out the second phase of field studies to determine the effectiveness of a coflow injector which mixes liquid CO2 and ambient seawater to produce a hydrate slurry as a possible CO2 delivery method for ocean carbon sequestration. The experiments were carried out at ocean depths of 1000-1300 m in Monterey Bay, CA, using a larger injector than that initially employed under remotely operated vehicle control and imaging of the product. Solidlike composite particles comprised of water, solid CO2 hydrate, and liquid CO2 were produced in both studies.
