Tumours of the sternum can be either primary or secondary with malignancy being the most common etiology. Wide local excision of these tumours results in a midline defect which pose a unique challenge for reconstruction. As limited data on the management of these tumours exists in the literature, we hereby report 14 consecutive patients who were treated at our institute between January 2009 to December 2020.

Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma (PSP) is a rare and interesting pulmonary tumour that presents a diagnostic challenge to the surgeon due to its bland symptomatology, indolent course, non-specific radiological features and ambiguous histopathological findings, which could lead to errors in management and prognostication. Herein, we present a series of 4 patients with PSP who were managed in our institution over a period of 8 years and briefly discuss relevant literature.

Article Synopsis
  • Metastatic hydatid disease occurs when a hydatid cyst ruptures and releases contents into the bloodstream, leading to embolization in the lungs.
  • A patient who had surgery for a hydatid cyst in the right ventricular wall in 2014 developed multiple embolised cysts in pulmonary artery branches by 2017.
  • Despite medical treatment following surgery, the patient's condition only partially improved, suggesting current treatments may not be fully effective.

Bacterial sternal wound infections following cardiac surgery are not uncommon. However, sternal wound infection by a fungus is a rarity, and it warrants a correct diagnosis followed by specific treatment. We report a case of sternal wound infection with costochondritis following cardiac surgery, and briefly review the relevant literature.

  • The study aimed to compare the performance and agreement of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values measured by different certified analyzers.
  • Conducted at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology with 100 patients, the study used three methods: turbidimetric inhibitory immunoassay (TINIA), electrophoresis, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • Results showed that the HbA1c values from all three methods were very similar and displayed strong correlations, suggesting they can be used interchangeably in clinical settings.

Post-traumatic portal venous thrombosis is a rare event, and is usually seen in association with penetrating injuries. Portal venous thrombosis following blunt abdominal trauma is extremely rare with only few reports in the literature, some associated with underlying coagulation disorders. We report multidetector computed tomography findings in a case of blunt abdominal trauma with otherwise normal coagulation profile, which showed shattered spleen and MDCT evidence of acute thrombosis in the right branch of the portal vein.
