During preparation for action, the presentation of loud acoustic stimuli (LAS) can trigger movements at very short latencies in a phenomenon called the StartReact effect. It was initially proposed that a special, separate subcortical mechanism that bypasses slower cortical areas could be involved. We sought to examine the evidence for a separate mechanism against the alternative that responses to LAS can be explained by a combination of stimulus intensity effects and preparatory states.

Several studies have reported an association between certain human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles and carbamazepine (CBZ)-induced hypersensitivity reactions in patients with epilepsy. Here, the relationship between the clinical spectrum and the HLA allele profiles in patients with CBZ-induced hypersensitivity reactions was investigated using next-generation sequence (NGS) data obtained from 65 Vietnamese patients with epilepsy, including 33 with CBZ-tolerance and 32 patients with CBZ-hypersensitivity, in which only 8 with severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions and 24 were mild-hypersensitive patients. Three loci of HLA class I (HLA-A, -B, and -C) and two loci of HLA class II (HLA-DQA1 and -DRB1) were included in our analysis.

Methods: We used data from the Young Asian American Health Survey (YAAHS), an online-recruited sample of AA adolescents (ages 13-17) and young adults (ages 18-29 years) conducted during May 2021 to March 2022. We presented descriptive statistics examining the univariate distribution and bivariate relationships of depression severity, sociodemographic characteristics, and experiences and perceptions of anti-Asian violence.
Objectives: Single-sided deafness (SSD) is characterized by a profoundly deaf ear and normal hearing in the contralateral ear. A cochlear implant (CI) is the only method to restore functional hearing in a profoundly deaf ear. In a previous study, we identified that the cortical processing of a CI signal differs from the normal-hearing ear (NHE) when directly compared using an auditory oddball paradigm consisting of pure tones.

Biofilms are complex three-dimensional microbial communities that adhere to a variety of surfaces and interact with their surroundings. Because of the dynamic nature of biofilm formation, establishing a uniform technique for quantifying and monitoring biofilm volume, shape, and features in real-time is challenging. Herein, we describe a noninvasive electrochemical impedance approach for real-time monitoring of dental plaque-derived multispecies biofilm growth on a range of substrates.

In immunocompromised patients, CMV disease corresponds to reactivation of the virus with tissue damage responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. In immunocompetent adults, primary CMV infection is usually asymptomatic but may rarely result in severe organ damage.

Examination of postmortem brains of participants with antemortem plasma p-tau levels remains critical to understanding comorbid and AD-specific contribution to these biomarker changes.
Methods: We analyzed 35 population-based Mayo Clinic Study of Aging participants with plasma p-tau at threonine 181 and threonine 217 (p-tau181, p-tau217) available within 3 years of death.
Chronic pain is associated with abnormal cortical excitability and increased pain intensity. Research investigating the potential for transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to modulate motor cortex excitability and reduce pain in individuals with chronic lower back pain (CLBP) yield mixed results. The present randomised, placebo-controlled study examined the impact of anodal-tDCS over left-dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (left-DLPFC) on motor cortex excitability and pain in those with CLBP.

Background: The promoter is extensively used as a smooth muscle cell (SMC) Cre-driver and is regarded as the most restrictive and specific promoter available to study SMCs. Unfortunately, in the existing mouse, the transgene was inserted on the Y chromosome precluding the study of female mice. Given the importance of including sex as a biological variable and that numerous SMC-based diseases have a sex-dependent bias, the field has been tremendously limited by the lack of a model to study both sexes.

We investigated whether TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) was contributing to this volume-uptake mismatch.
Methods: Seventy-seven participants with flortaucipir-PET and volumetric magnetic resonance imaging underwent postmortem AD and TDP-43 pathology assessments.
Purpose: Whether prostate brachytherapy (BT) results in opportunistic biological changes that can improve clinical outcomes is not well studied. We sought to investigate the impact of prostate BT on the immune system.
Materials And Methods: A scoping review was performed using PubMed/Scopus for papers published between 2011-2021.
Problem/condition: CDC conducts abortion surveillance to document the number and characteristics of women obtaining legal induced abortions and number of abortion-related deaths in the United States.
Period Covered: 2020.
Description Of System: Each year, CDC requests abortion data from the central health agencies for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City.
Objective: To investigate whether support vector machine (SVM) trained with radiomics features based on breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could predict the upgrade of ductal carcinoma (DCIS) diagnosed by core needle biopsy (CNB) after surgical excision.
Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included a total of 349 lesions from 346 female patients (mean age, 54 years) diagnosed with DCIS by CNB between January 2011 and December 2017. Based on histological confirmation after surgery, the patients were divided into pure (n = 198, 56.
Introduction: Harm reduction services, including methadone maintenance therapy (MMT), have been decentralized to Vietnam's community health care settings. This study aims to pilot test an intervention to facilitate decentralized harm reduction service delivery in Vietnam.
Methods: The research team conducted an intervention pilot between August 2020 and May 2021 with six community MMT distribution sites in Thai Nguyen Province of Vietnam.
Introduction: The incidence of pediatric hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism (HA-VTE) has increased over time. Congenital heart disease (CHD) as a co-morbidity has been demonstrated to significantly increase HA-VTE risk among hospitalized children.
Objective: To identify specific risks factors for the development of HA-VTE in hospitalized children with CHD.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the vulnerability of healthcare services worldwide, raising the need to develop novel tools to provide rapid and cost-effective screening and diagnosis. Clinical reports indicated that COVID-19 infection may cause cardiac injury, and electrocardiograms (ECG) may serve as a diagnostic biomarker for COVID-19. This study aims to utilize ECG signals to detect COVID-19 automatically.

While the COVID-19 pandemic sparked public interest in eliminating the wildlife trade, a better understanding is needed of the economic repercussions of COVID-19 on those who rely on wildlife farming for their livelihoods. Using the case studies of Ba Ria Vung Tau and Binh Duong provinces in Vietnam - a country seen as Asia's wildlife trade hotspot - this paper explores COVID-19's impacts on wildlife farms and their owners.

As such, this study examines how neural signals associated with discrimination and evaluation-processes (P3b) from semantic stimuli compare with those elicited by tones and speech tokens. This study comprises of two experiments, both containing thirteen adults with normal hearing in both ears (PTA ≤ 20 dB HL).

This hospital-based, cross-sectional study was conducted at the National Geriatric Hospital, Hanoi, Vietnam, from June 2019 to August 2020. Face-to-face interviews were performed to gather the following information: socio-demographic characteristics, heart failure classification, and clinical characteristics (comorbidities, polypharmacy, pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), symptom burden, and depression).
