The effects of pentoxifylline on renal function and free radical production in unilateral ureteral obstruction.

There is an ongoing discussion about ureteral obstruction-related renal dysfunction. In this study, we aimed to test the effect of pentoxifylline (PTX) on both kidneys in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO), and to determine its interaction of with prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and diclofenac sodium (DIS). A sham operation was performed in group 1.

Reperfusion injury of the rat bladder is worse than ischemia.

Purpose: Previous studies have demonstrated that in vivo and in vitro ischemia of the bladder results in decreased contractile responses. However, to our knowledge the effect of reperfusion following ischemia of the bladder is not known.

Materials And Methods: Adult male rats were subjected to bilateral bladder ischemia and varying periods of reperfusion.

Height improvement by L-thyroxine treatment in subclinical hypothyroidism.

Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism(SH) is most commonly an early stage of hypothyroidism. Although the condition may resolve or remain unchanged, within a few years in some patients overt hypothyroidism develops, with low free T4 levels as well as a raised thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level. Patients with SH may have subtle hypothyroid symptoms with mild abnormalities of serum lipoproteins and cardiac functions.

Sacrococcygeal teratoma showing organoid differentiation: report of a case.

We present the case of a neonate with a sacrococcygeal teratoma showing organoid differentiation. A 5-day-old baby girl was transferred to our hospital with a large sacrococcygeal mass. Ultrasonography revealed a few well-limited fluid-filled lesions, indicating that the teratoma had cystic components.

Anti-inflammatory and antiulcerogenic effects of the aqueous extract of Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm.

An aqeuous extract of Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm., from which a tea is prepared and consumed as treatment for various diseases in northeastern Turkey, was tested for its anti-inflammatory and antiulcerogenic effects in rats.

Unlabelled: Total colonic aganglionosis (TCA) extended to the ileum is seen quite rare among infants with Hirschsprung's disease. Type and timing of definitive surgery in these patients are controversial. This report was presented to discuss the management of two siblings with TCA.

Omentum pediculed musculo-peritoneal flap (OPMP) for growing intestinal neomucosa in a rat model.

Background/purpose: To construct a musculo-peritoneal flap adequately vascularised through attached omentum and to evaluate whether this flap is functional for growing new intestinal mucosa.

Methods: 24 rats underwent two surgical procedures. 1) A musculo-peritoneal flap was prepared, omentum was fixed onto the muscular side and a silicon graft was placed on the peritoneal side.

Detection of leptospiral antigens in kidney and liver of cattle.

This study was designed to investigate the presence of leptospiral antigens in kidney and liver of naturally infected cattle using an immunoperoxidase (IP) staining and Levaditi's staining methods. A total of 39 cattle suspected from leptospirosis were examined histologically and immunohistochemically for the presence of leptospiral antigens. The leptospiral antigens were detected in 16 out of 39 cases (seven kidneys, three livers, and six kidneys and livers) when IP staining method was used, whereas leptospiral antigens were detected in 6 out of 39 cases (four kidneys and two livers) when Levaditi's staining method was used.

A case of intestinal obstruction due to phytobezoar--an alternative surgical approach.

We report a 5-year-old patient with phytobezoar mimicking acute appendicitis preoperatively. During laparotomy, it was detected that terminal ileum was obstructed by several fragments of rubbery material. Bezoar was milked into the large bowel, and phytobezoar including tangerine residues was evacuated via appendix stump because of severe distended cecum, and high risk of the anastomotic leakage and intraperitoneal contamination following enterotomy of the inflamated and ischemic ileum.

Serologic examinations of hepatitis, cytomegalovirus, and rubella in patients with Bell's palsy.

Objective: The aim of this retrospective case review was to investigate serologic evidence of cytomegalovirus, rubella virus, and hepatitis A, B, and C viruses in patients with Bell's palsy.

Design: A total of 24 patients with idiopathic facial paralysis, without a history of trauma, any evidence of a tumor on high-resolution computed tomographic imaging, or any otologic disease, and 33 healthy individuals as a control group were included in this study. Facial paralysis of the patient was evaluated with the House-Brackmann grading scale.

Preeclampsia disrupts the normal physiology of leptin.

This study was designed to examine the leptin levels of preeclamptic women and their offspring, to compare them with those of normal pregnant women and to search for a correlation between maternal and fetal plasma leptin levels and their anthropometric characteristics. Twenty-one preeclamptic women and their babies were enrolled into the study. Control group consisted of 21 normal pregnant women and their babies, whose birth weights, gestational ages, and genders match with those of babies born to preeclamptic women.

Study Design: Twenty Mayer-Rokitanski-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome patients underwent creation of a neovagina using Vecchietti's operation by laparotomy (17 cases) and laparoscopy (3 cases).

An investigation of the antiinflammatory effects of an extract from Cladonia rangiformis HOFFM.

In this study, the antiinflammatory effects of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg doses of extract obtained from Cladonia rangiformis, so-called C-1, were investigated. The effects of C-1 on the acute phase of inflammation were studied in formaldehyde-induced edema. A cotton-pellet granuloma test was used to investigate the effects of C-1 on chronic inflammation.

The intracranial complication of acute isolated sphenoid sinusitis.

Acute isolated sphenoid sinusitis is a rare, potentially destructive entity, which has indistinct clinical findings and non-specific symptoms. Hence, it can be easily be misdiagnosed. We present and discuss a case of an isolated sphenoiditis with intracranial complication.

Pentoxifylline contributes to the hepatic cytoprotective process in rats undergoing hepatic ischemia and reperfusion injury.

Aim: Considerable efforts have been made to find and/or eliminate the underyling causes of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury, but many points are still unclear. Pentoxifylline-related cytoprotection is one of these unclear points. Our study tests the effects of pentoxifylline on the hepatic cytoprotective process in an experimental model.

Comprehensive microsurgical anatomy of the jugular foramen and review of terminology.

The microsurgical anatomy of the jugular foramen was studied in 12 formalin preserved cadavers (24 foramina) and 40 dry-skulls (80 foramina). The jugular foramen was exposed by microsurgical dissection with drilling from a superior to inferior direction. Observations regarding dural architecture of the jugular foramen and relationships between neurovascular structures passing through the foramen were noted in cadavers.
