Habits Related to Strength Training of Brazilian Recreational Runners.

Despite strength training (ST) being well characterized by professional runners, little is known about the inclusion of ST models for recreational runners. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the presence of ST in the training practices of recreational runners, with a focus on understanding its characteristics and the motivations of recreational athletes for including ST in their routines. To this end, 801 recreational runners (493 male and 308 female) completed a structured questionnaire regarding their training habits, the inclusion of ST, and its characteristics, concerning the type of ST, training volume, and the reasons for including ST in their training programs.

Land use and cover changes lead to fragmentation of the natural habitats of sand flies and modify the epidemiological profile of leishmaniasis. This process contributes to the infestation of adjacent rural settlements by vector sand fly species with different degrees of adaptation, promoting leishmaniasis outbreaks. This study aimed to assess land use and cover changes over a 12-year period and investigate the diversity and abundance of sand fly assemblages in the rural area of Codó, Maranhão State, Brazil.

This study investigated the association between interleukin-10 (IL-10) and the Notch pathway in C2C12 cells, as well as explored the effects of combined endurance and resistance exercise on the Notch and autophagy pathways in the skeletal muscle of senescence-accelerated mouse-resistant 1 Sedentary (SAMR1 CT), SAMR1 exercised (SAMR1 EX), senescence-accelerated prone mouse 8 Sedentary (SAMP8 CT), and SAMP8 exercised (SAMP8 EX). C2C12 myoblasts were transfected with siIL-10.

The Effects of a Blend of Essential Oils in the Milk of Suckling Calves on Performance, Immune and Antioxidant Systems, and Intestinal Microbiota.

The objective of the present study was to determine whether the addition of a blend based on the essential oils of cinnamon, oregano, and eucalyptus to the liquid diets of calves would stimulate the immune system combined with anti-inflammatory action, minimize oxidative responses, and alter the intestinal microbiota, consequently enhancing animal growth. Twenty-four male Holstein calves (approximately five days old) were suckled for 60 days, underwent a weaning process, and were followed up until day 75 of the experiment. The calves were divided into control ( = 12) and phytobiotic ( = 12) groups, receiving commercial milk replacer and pelleted concentrate ad libitum.

Blended phytogenics as an alternative to growth-promoting antibiotics in newly weaned piglets.

The research aimed to evaluate the effects of a commercial blend of phytogenic compounds on the digestibility, antioxidant system, intestinal microbiota, and performance of weaned piglets. Two experiments compared three treatments (diets): control, zinc bacitracin (300 g/t) and blended phytogenic compounds (400 g/t). Introduction: Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common condition, affecting women worldwide and is known to have a significant impact on Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). Although there are various treatment options available, including pelvic floor muscle training and support pessaries, many women opt for or require surgery, with a lifetime risk of needing surgery of 12%-19%. As with any operation, this does not come without its complications and the reoperation rate following POP surgery is up to 36%.

Nasal telangiectatic osteosarcoma with direct extension to the brain in a domestic shorthair cat.

Case Summary: This case report describes the clinical and pathological features of telangiectatic osteosarcoma (TOS) with brain invasion in a 4-year-old female domestic shorthair cat. The cat presented with respiratory distress, epistaxis, anorexia and significant nasal obstruction. A rhinoscopy revealed an amorphous white neoformation in the left nasal cavity.

Carbon-Nanotube-Based Superhydrophobic Magnetic Nanomaterial as Absorbent for Rapid and Efficient Oil/Water Separation.

In this work, the simple fabrication of a new superhydrophobic magnetic sponge based on CNTs, NiFeO nanoparticles, and PDMS was investigated. CNTs were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on a nickel ferrite catalyst supported on aluminum oxide (NiFeO/AlO). The synthesis of nickel ferrite (NiFe) was accomplished using the sol-gel method, yielding magnetic nanoparticles (43 Amkg, coercivity of 93 Oe, 21-29 nm).

Hepatoprotective, Lipid-Lowering and Antioxidant Effects of Mangaba Powder () Administered to Rats Fed a High-Fat Diet.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential effects of administering mangaba powder on liver function and somatic, oxidative and lipid metabolism parameters in rats fed a high-fat diet. Prepared mangaba powder has important amounts of phenolic compounds, vitamin C, dietary fiber and oligosaccharides. A total of 32 adult Wistar rats were initially randomized into two groups for the biological assay: normal-fat (NF, n = 16) and high-fat (HF, n = 16) diets for 21 days.

Multiple myeloma (MM) patients are often refractory to targeted therapies including proteasome inhibitors (PIs). Here, analysis of RNA sequencing data derived from 672 patients with newly diagnosed or relapsed/refractory disease identified the acid ceramidase, ASAH1, as a key regulator of PI resistance. Genetic or pharmacological blockade of ASAH1 remarkably restored PI sensitivity and protected mice from resistant MM progression in vivo.

Food consumption patterns and Framingham cardiovascular risk score among shift workers: A Nova-based approach.

Objective: To evaluate the association between dietary quantity and variety, by extent and purpose of processing, and Framingham cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk score among rotating shift workers.

Methods: The cross-sectional study included male shift workers. Dietary intake was assessed using a 24-h recall method conducted by trained interviewers.

Validation of an HPLC-MS/MS method for the quantification of pesticide residues in Rice and assessment of the washing effect.

Unlabelled: A method was validated to determine 121 pesticide residues (carbamates, organophosphates, organochlorines, and pyrethroids) in rice samples, following the guidance document SANTE/11312/2021v2. QuEChERS method was selected for pesticide extraction, and the extract was analyzed by HPLC-MS/MS. The methodology demonstrated precision and accuracy, with recovery rates ranging from 70 % to 119 %.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health problem and it is known that the identification of molecular markers involved in glycemic control can impact disease control. Although the rs266729 polymorphism located in the promoter of the adiponectin gene (ADP) has been shown to be a candidate for involvement in glycemic control, the genotypic groups have never been characterized in terms of metabolomic aspects. Objective: Analyze the metabolites present in the rs266729 genotype groups.

Obesity modifies the association of race and COVID-19 mortality: analysis of a retrospective cohort from Brazil.

COVID-19 and obesity are two concurrent, interrelated pandemics that share similarities in their social causes, including racism. It is essential to understand how their characteristics are interrelated and the possible role of obesity in the association between race and COVID-19 mortality. We investigated the relationship between race and COVID-19 mortality and the modifying effect of obesity on this relationship.

HTLV infection in urban population from Mato Grosso do Sul, Central Brazil.

Background: Brazil has the highest number of HTLV-1 infection in Latin America, with around one million cases spread unevenly across regions. However, there is a limited number of studies on this infection in the general population. This cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the prevalence of HTLV as well as identify types, and subtypes of HTLV among the urban population of Campo Grande, capital of Mato Grosso do Sul state (MS).

Analysis of the efficacy of endovascular treatment with foam sclerotherapy for pelvic congestion syndrome with ultrasound assessment.

Background: Pelvic Congestion Syndrome is an important cause of pelvic pain in adult women, leading to reduced quality of life, absenteeism from work, anxiety, depression, and sexual disorders.

Objectives: To evaluate the response to endovascular treatment for pelvic varicose veins using foam sclerotherapy and outline the profile of patients with this diagnosis followed up at the Hospital das Clínicas Cassiano Antônio Moraes, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, Brazil.

Methods: Based on review of medical records, this retrospective descriptive study analyzes the profile and response of patients undergoing endovascular treatment for pelvic varicose veins by foam sclerotherapy.

Effect of maxillary advancement on velopharyngeal function in cleft lip and palate: 20 years of experience.

This retrospective study aimed to investigate the impact of orthognathic surgery with maxillary advancement (MA) on the velopharyngeal function (VF) in individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP). The study included 651 patients with repaired CLP, both sexes, aged over 18 years who underwent MA alone or in combination with nasal procedures and/or mandibular osteotomy, operated between 2000 and 2019. The main outcome measures were nasalance (nasal text-NT and oral text-OT) and velopharyngeal orifice area measurement (VA), determined by nasometry and pressure-flow technique, respectively.

Histological, reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and immunoblotting analyses were conducted, supplemented by transcriptomic data sets and AML12 hepatocyte studies.

Several therapeutic agents have been approved for treating multiple myeloma, a cancer of bone marrow-resident plasma cells. Predictive biomarkers for drug response could help guide clinical strategies to optimize outcomes. In this study, we present an integrated functional genomic analysis of tumor samples from patients multiple myeloma that were assessed for their ex vivo drug sensitivity to 37 drugs, clinical variables, cytogenetics, mutational profiles, and transcriptomes.

Cardiac embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in a domestic shorthair cat.

Rhabdomyosarcomas (RBMs) are rare neoplasms arising from striated muscle tissues in domestic animals and are exceptionally uncommon, affecting the heart of domestic cats. A case of cardiac embryonal RBM was detected in a two-year-old female domestic shorthair cat. The cat exhibited dyspnea, anorexia, pericardial and pleural effusions, ultimately succumbing to severe respiratory arrest.

Blood mercury concentrations in preschool children and potential risk factors in São Paulo, Brazil.

Environmental exposure of preschool children to mercury can elevate blood mercury levels (BML) and negatively affect their health. This study aimed to determine BML in preschool children from Brazil's largest city and explore potential associated risk factors. Blood samples were collected in 2013 from 2436 children (age 1-5 years) attending 50 daycare centers (DCC) located in São Paulo, Brazil.
