Introduction: Oral health is a crucial factor for service safety among military pilots, but studies specifically on pilots are still very few in Finland. The aim of this study was to assess the oral health status of military student pilots compared to other conscripts of the same age group.
Materials And Methods: The data were collected during the oral health examinations of the annual class of the Pilot Reserve Officer Course students at the beginning of their duty at the Air Force Academy (N = 38).
Objectives: About 10% of adults in northern Finland have severe dental fear, but there is a lack of detailed knowledge about dental fear among illicit drug users. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of dental fear and its association with self-reported oral health and health behavior as well as background factors of the customers of substance abuse services living in the region of Oulu, Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland.
Materials And Methods: One hundred seventeen volunteers, either active or former illicit drug users, were interviewed face-to-face about their background factors, health and health behaviors, and use of illicit drugs.
Objective: The aims of this study were to assess the accuracy of Cameriere's and Demirjian's methods in Finnish children, and compare the findings with those of the Turkish children according to dental age.
Material And Methods: Dental panoramic tomography (DPT) of children (482 Finnish, 423 Turkish) aged between 5 and 15 years were evaluated. Comparison of mean difference between estimated and chronological age was evaluated.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate factors associated with nurses' self-efficacy in oral care among infection-sensitive patients in a university hospital.
Material And Methods: All the nurses working in five wards of internal medicine and one department of oncology at Oulu University Hospital, Finland (n = 114) were recruited. Data were collected with a questionnaire containing 10 self-efficacy items (scored 0 to 10) and nine knowledge items (five-point Likert scale) that were validated in an earlier pilot study.
Objective: This study aimed to determine the survival of class II composite restorations in premolars and molars with and without base bulk-fill composite in general dental practice.
Materials And Methods: We collected data from the electronic patient files of the Public Dental Services in the City of Oulu, Finland. The timespan of data collection was from August 15th, 2002, to August 9th, 2018.
Background: Determining risk indicators behind dental caries is important for identifying children in need of enhanced dental care. The aim of this register-based study was to investigate the association of family-related risk indicators and dental attendance in the development of dental caries in preschool children.
Methods: The data for this study were collected from the medical records of 206 randomly chosen preschool children who lived in the city of Oulu, Finland, during 2014-2020.
Objective: To evaluate the ability of near-infrared light transillumination (NIR-LT) to detect interproximal enamel and dentinal caries lesions compared to clinical-visual inspection aided by fiber-optic transillumination (FOTI).
Method And Materials: From 170 Finnish adolescents aged 15 to 17 years, 5,294 interproximal surfaces of premolars and molars were examined first clinical-visually aided by FOTI (VI+FOTI) using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) classification. Subsequently, the surfaces were examined using NIR-LT.

Introduction: Anticholinergic drugs propose a threat for oral health by causing dry mouth. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate whether a high anticholinergic burden was associated with the presence of initial caries lesions, manifested caries lesions, dental fillings, or tooth loss among 46-y-old people.
Methods: The study population consisted of 1,906 participants from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 who underwent an oral health examination in 2012-2013.
A genome-wide association study was performed in sex-stratified groups representing three different caries phenotypes among adults. The study sample consisted of 46-year-old participants of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study (n = 1481). The phenotypes for analyses were the dentin caries phenotype (persons having at least one tooth with dentin caries lesion), and the enamel caries phenotype (those having teeth with more than 10 enamel caries lesions), while the control group had <10 enamel caries lesions and no teeth with dentin caries, respectively.

While in the past, caries was mainly treated operatively, the today's management has shifted toward noninvasive, minimal invasive, and, only if needed, invasive treatment options. Aiming at enabling the most noninvasive or conservative treatment option requires early caries detection, which, however, remains challenging.

However, the epidemiology of LP is not yet sufficiently understood. The aim of this study was to retrospectively map out the characteristics, comorbidities and treatments of patients diagnosed with LP.

The study population consisted of 328 voluntary, >15-year-old secondary school students (males 49.1%, females 50.

Identifying the relevant risk loci and understanding their molecular biology could highlight new prevention and management avenues. Our current understanding of oral health genomics suggests that dental caries and periodontitis are polygenic diseases, and very large sample sizes and informative phenotypic measures are required to discover signals and adequately map associations across the human genome.

At the individual level, the mean number of decayed teeth (DT > 0) has also steadily continued to decline. In Finland, military service is mandatory, and around 85% of males complete it.

Objectives: Patient-centered approach can offer valuable information in improving dental care, but literature is scarce. This study aimed to evaluate self-reported factors beneficial for attendance in dental care.
Material And Methods: Survey data were collected during the summer of 2020 comprising both structured questionnaires and an open question on factors considered beneficial for dental attendance.
Studies on measured physical fitness and oral health are sparse. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between self-reported physical activity and measured physical fitness and oral health of young men. The study population consisted of 13,564 Finnish male conscripts who had mandatory clinical oral examinations and physical fitness tests at the beginning of military service in 2011.

Other aims were to study the association between dental fear and cariological status as well as their self-reported, dentition-related well-being. The study material consisted of 13,564 men and 255 women conscripts who underwent oral examinations.

Methods: All the heart-operated children born between the years 1997 and 1999 were identified in the national ProCardio database (n = 570). Primary dental care records were requested from this population and were eventually received from 211 patients.
Aim: To evaluate the regional variation in restorative treatment need among Finnish young people based on the socioeconomic factors.
Materials And Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 20 garrisons of the Finnish Defence Forces in January and July 2011. The study population comprised 13,819 Finnish conscripts born in the beginning of 1990s, including females.
According to current care guidelines, it would be beneficial to evaluate the difficulty of a root canal treatment (RCT) after the decision of an indicated RCT. For this matter, several difficulty assessment forms have been developed. In this pilot study, fifth-year dental students evaluated the usefulness of the Endodontic Case Difficulty Assessment Form (ECAF) presented in the Finnish Current Care Guidelines for Endodontic Treatment (2014).

A visual lesion assessment system, International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS), has been developed to promote reliability and repeatability of assessment of different stage caries lesions. The aims of this study were to evaluate the experiences of a hands-on exercise with authentic teeth as an adjunct to lecturing among third-year dental students and to evaluate the learning process during the hands-on exercise measured by qualitative (inductive content) analysis of the given feedback.
