Inspiratory fall in intrathoracic pressure during a spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) may precipitate cardiac dysfunction and acute pulmonary edema. We aimed to determine the relationship between radiological signs of pulmonary congestion prior to an SBT and weaning outcomes. This was a post hoc analysis of a prospective cohort study involving patients in an adult medical-surgical ICU.

Prognostic Value of Right Ventricular Dysfunction in Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction: Superiority of Longitudinal Strain Over Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion.

Background: In heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction, right ventricular (RV) impairment, as defined by reduced tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion, is a predictor of poor outcome. However, peak longitudinal strain of RV free wall (RVFWS) has been recently proposed as a more accurate and sensitive tool to evaluate RV function. Accordingly, we investigated whether RVFWS could help refine prognosis of patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction in whom tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion is still preserved.

A cluster-randomized trial of a college health center-based alcohol and sexual violence intervention (GIFTSS): Design, rationale, and baseline sample.

Introduction: Sexual violence (SV) on college campuses is common, especially alcohol-related SV. This is a 2-arm cluster randomized controlled trial to test a brief intervention to reduce risk for alcohol-related sexual violence (SV) among students receiving care from college health centers (CHCs). Intervention CHC staff are trained to deliver universal SV education to all students seeking care, to facilitate patient and provider comfort in discussing SV and related abusive experiences (including the role of alcohol).

New dentate granule cells (DGCs) are continuously generated, and integrate into the preexisting hippocampal network in the adult brain. How an adult-born neuron with initially simple spindle-like morphology develops into a DGC, consisting of a single apical dendrite with further branches, remains largely unknown. Here, using retroviruses to birth date and manipulate newborn neurons, we examined initial dendritic formation and possible underlying mechanisms.

Solitary ulcerated plaque on the face - an unusual presentation of cutaneous plasmacytosis?

Cutaneous and systemic plasmacytosis is a rare disorder characterized by cutaneous polyclonal plasma cell infiltration frequently associated with polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia and lymphadenopathy. We report a case of a 67-year-old woman with an inflammatory ulcerated plaque in the left masseter region. A skin biopsy showed dense perivascular infiltrate of mature plasma cells in the dermis without atypia and immunoglobulin light chain restriction.

Assessment of the nitrogen fertilization effect on bioactive compounds of frozen fresh and dried samples of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni.

The present study aims to assess the effect of different nitrogen (N) rates on the chemical composition and antioxidant properties of stevia frozen fresh and dried leaves, and to define the best growing conditions to maximize the levels of bioactive compounds. In general, processing affects more significantly the tocopherol and sugar contents than N fertilization. The most abundant sugars were xylose, arabinose + fructose and sucrose, presenting dried samples with higher contents than frozen fresh ones, while the latter better retained tocopherols than dry samples.

Rod-cone dystrophy (RCD), also called retinitis pigmentosa, is the most common form of progressive inherited retinal disorders secondary to photoreceptor degeneration. It is a genetically heterogeneous disease characterized by night blindness, followed by visual field constriction and, in most severe cases, total blindness. The aim of our study was to identify the underlying gene defect leading to severe RCD in a 60-year-old woman.

Herein, the impact of gamma radiation on the production of ellagitannin-rich extracts was investigated using Tuberaria lignosa as a case study.

Background: Increased red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has been associated with poor outcome after cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). However, whether baseline RDW, and its serial changes after CRT implant, have incremental prognostic value is unknown.

Methods And Results: In 148 consecutive patients (age, 68±9years; 122 men) undergoing CRT, RDW was assessed before and 3months after implant.

Is Gamma Radiation Suitable to Preserve Phenolic Compounds and to Decontaminate Mycotoxins in Aromatic Plants? A Case-Study with Aloysia citrodora Paláu.

This study aimed to determine the effect of gamma radiation on the preservation of phenolic compounds and on decontamination of dry herbs in terms of ochratoxin A (OTA) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), using Paláu as a case study. For this purpose, artificially contaminated dry leaves were submitted to gamma radiation at different doses (1, 5, and 10 kGy; at dose rate of 1.7 kGy/h).

The first case of benign multicystic mesothelioma presenting as a splenic mass.

Multicystic mesothelioma (MM) is a relatively rare tumour arising in the pelvic peritoneum of the tuboovarian region of young woman. Exceptionally, MM occurs on the serosal surfaces of various organs including kidney, bladder, lymph nodes, and liver. We report here the first case of MM wherein a 58-year-old woman with a previous history of endometriosis of the right ovary presented with a large multicystic mass of the spleen.

A case of multicentric low-grade neuroendocrine breast tumor with an unusual histological pattern.

Neuroendocrine features are detectable in carcinomas of the breast either as scattered cells, that are recognized by their expression of neuroendocrine cell markers. Instead, pure breast carcinomas with neuroendocrine features (NEBC) are very rare and represent <1% of all breast cancer. Usually NEBC may be well or poorly differentiated and more frequent in older woman.

ARL2BP mutations account for 0.1% of autosomal recessive rod-cone dystrophies with the report of a novel splice variant.

We report a novel ARL2BP splice site mutation after whole-exome sequencing (WES) applied to a Moroccan family including two sisters affected with autosomal recessive rod-cone dystrophy (arRCD). Subsequent analysis of 844 index cases did not reveal further pathogenic chances in ARL2BP indicating that mutations in ARL2B are a rare cause of arRCD (about 0.1%) in a large cohort of French patients.

Objective: To compare the impact of chronic pain physiopathology on health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), considering the influence of pain features and psychosocial adjustment (intensity, interference, psychological comorbidities, and sleep quality).

Design: A cross-sectional study involving 1,025 noncancer patients with predominantly neuropathic, nociceptive, or mixed chronic pain conditions was conducted in 88 pain clinics within Spain. The EuroQol-5 Dimensions instrument (EQ-5D) was used to measure HR-QoL.

Modified atmosphere packaging and post-packaging irradiation of leaves: a comparative study of postharvest quality changes.

The effects of conventional and inert-gas enriched atmospheres, as well as those caused by different γ-irradiation doses, on buckler sorrel () leaves quality were evaluated and compared after 12 days of storage at 4 °C. The green colour of the abaxial surface of the leaves was relatively stable, as well as the carbohydrates content and the calorific value. The storage time decreased the amounts of fructose, glucose, trehalose, α-tocopherol, and β-tocopherol and increased the levels of total organic acids and δ-tocopherol.
