The frequencies of tetracycline resistance determinants of the classes A, B, C, and D were determined in 53 non-lactose-fermenting clinical isolates. The most frequent class of determinant in Salmonella typhimurium and Shigella flexneri strains was class B; however, the predominant determinant in Shigella sonnei strains was class C.

There is a significant association between the rapid acetylator phenotype and diabetes in European populations. Diabetes is a common problem in Saudi Arabians with some clinical features differentiating it from the disorder in Europeans. The genetic expression and dependence on gyrase of plasmid pBR322 were studied in dam-3, dcm-6, and dam-3 dcm-6 derivatives of a minicell-producing Escherichia coli strain. The results obtained with both methylated and undermethylated plasmid DNA were similar.

A method was recently adopted by AOAC for determination of methyl-bound mercury in canned and fresh-frozen seafood by electron capture gas chromatography. That method was applied to the analysis of commercially prepared freezer-case seafoods. None of the commercially added ingredients produced electron capture responses that interfered in the analysis for methyl mercury.

Seasonal changes in gene arrangement and allozyme frequencies have been investigated in Drosophila subobscura for several years. Some arrangements (O(st) and O(3+4+7)) show seasonal variation, which suggests that chromosomal polymorphism is flexible in this species. Seasonal changes in allozyme frequencies for Lap and Pept-1 loci, both located within the same inversions of chromosome O, are significant only inside the O(st) arrangement, but not inside O(3+4) arrangement.

The transposition of both portions of the sternocleidomastoid muscle for the reconstruction of the face leaves a "flat neck deformity" which has discouraged many surgeons from using it in the treatment of benign cases. By splitting the muscle in its two portions and transposing only one, this deformity can be avoided. We present five cases to illustrate the versatility of the split sternocleidomastoid myocutaneous flap.

An intellectual deficit in low socio-economic strata (S-E) of underdeveloped countries is widespread. A similar phenomenon is observed in industrialized countries and is known as socio-cultural retardation (S-CR); one theory holds that it is due to psychosensory deprivation whilst another denies that there is in fact a deficit, there being only middle class-oriented testing applied to subjects whose skills lie in another direction. Whichever theory is true, in underdeveloped countries the problem is compounded by malnutrition and perennial infection so that the intellectual deficit in these societies may be qualitatively different.

Biodegradation of [C]tri-p-cresyl phosphate was studied in a laboratory model sewage treatment system to develop information on the nature of its transformation products. In 24-h experiments, 70 to 80% of tri-p-cresyl phosphate added at the 1-mug/ml level was degraded. The remaining parent compound was associated with the sludge solids.

An intellectual deficit is known to exist in populations where extreme poverty is rife and is thus seen extensively in the lower socio-economic strata of underdeveloped nations. Poverty is a complex entity whose sociological and economic indicators often bear little relevance to the biological agents which can affect the central nervous system. An attempt is made to express poverty in terms of identifiable defects, physiological in nature.

Egg production curves of virgin and mated females of several genotypes at the singed locus of Drosophila melanogaster have been studied. Fitz-Earle's theorectical model (1971) for characterizing daily egg production has been used. In general, the model gave good fit to the experimental data.
