Early career psychiatrists' perceptions of and training experience in electroconvulsive therapy: A cross-sectional survey across Europe.

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a safe and effective treatment for several major psychiatric conditions, including treatment-resistant depression, mania, and schizophrenia; nevertheless, its use remains controversial. Despite its availability in some European countries, ECT is still rarely used in others. This study aims to investigate the experiences and attitudes of early career psychiatrists (ECPs) across Europe towards ECT and to examine how their exposure to ECT influences their perceptions.

DNA targeting by compact Cas9d and its resurrected ancestor.

Type II CRISPR endonucleases are widely used programmable genome editing tools. Recently, CRISPR-Cas systems with highly compact nucleases have been discovered, including Cas9d (a type II-D nuclease). Here, we report the cryo-EM structures of a Cas9d nuclease (747 amino acids in length) in multiple functional states, revealing a stepwise process of DNA targeting involving a conformational switch in a REC2 domain insertion.

Do low-risk patients really need follow-up after a pulmonary embolism?

Background: The British Thoracic Society recommend that pulmonary embolism (PE) patients with low-risk Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (PESI) scores are considered for outpatient (OP) management, in settings where robust pathways for follow-up and monitoring exist.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study. We reviewed the electronic records of 109 consecutive PE patients considered appropriate for OP management.

Background: Adequate dementia care knowledge of graduate nurses is essential for the wellbeing of both people living with dementia as well as the graduate nurses caring for them. Little is known about the dementia care knowledge, experience or confidence of graduate nurses caring for people living with dementia. This paper aims to review the available literature on graduate nurses caring for people living with dementia.

Can Emotionally Intelligent Mental Health Nurse Leaders Influence Workforce Sustainability? A Scoping Review.

Due to a global shortage of nursing staff, there is renewed attention on the impact of leadership and management styles on the sustainability of the nursing workforce. Emotional intelligence (EI), the ability to manage both your own emotions and to perceive and understand the emotions of others, has been implicated as a nursing management style impacting reduced turnover and greater nurse wellbeing. Despite these promising findings, there is a dearth of research on the role of emotionally intelligent leadership on the retention of mental health nurses.

It takes a village to raise a child- A multidisciplinary approach to promoting paediatric health literacy in cystic fibrosis.

Background: In Northern Ireland, approximately 550 people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) attend the regional paediatric and adult centres within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. This autosomal recessive chronic condition necessitates regular clinical monitoring and a high treatment burden, as well as time implications for the maintenance of respiratory devices. Development of health literacy skills at an early age and promoting children with CF (CwCF) to take an active role in their healthcare has many advantages relating to their long-term self-care in preparation for transition from paediatric to adult care, decision-making and partnership engagement with the CF-multidisciplinary team (CF-MDT).

Aquatic Therapy in Children and Adolescents with Disabilities: A Scoping Review.

Globally, around 1 in 10 children aged 0-17 years have moderate-to-severe disabilities. The aquatic environment provides hydrostatic and hydrodynamic characteristics that make exercise and therapy feasible for children and adolescents with disabilities. The objective of this scoping review is to understand the extent and type of evidence in relation to the use of aquatic therapy in children and adolescents with disabilities.

Revisiting Alcohol Consumption Among Nurses After the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause nurses stress and trauma, with alcohol potentially being used to manage this stress. Prior studies of nurses' alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic have shown increases in alcohol consumption to manage stress associated with the pandemic. The aim of this paper is to explore perceptions of alcohol consumption and stress among nurses, particularly since the declared end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The effect of prescription and over-the-counter medications on core temperature in adults during heat stress: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Heat stress impacts are an escalating global health concern. Public health bodies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) warn that certain medications impair thermoregulation, with limited supporting evidence. Our aim was to investigate whether medications listed by the WHO increase core temperature responses during heat stress.

Development of a therapeutic delivery platform with reduced colonization potential.

Bacterial biotherapeutic delivery vehicles have the potential to treat a variety of diseases. This approach obviates the need to purify the recombinant effector molecule, allows delivery of therapeutics via oral or intranasal administration, and protects the effector molecule during gastrointestinal transit. Lactic acid bacteria have been broadly developed as therapeutic delivery vehicles though risks associated with the colonization of a genetically modified microorganism have so-far not been addressed.

Psychedelic drugs have seen a resurgence in interest as a next generation of psychiatric medicines with potential as rapid-acting antidepressants (RAADs). Despite promising early clinical trials, the mechanisms which underlie the effects of psychedelics are poorly understood. The UNC Rural Interprofessional Health Initiative (RIPHI) is an intentional interprofessional model that has been in existence since 2017. This article provides an overview of this work, lessons learned, and opportunities for future partnerships.

Nurse Experiences of Caring for Medically Compromised Adolescents With Eating Disorders in General Hospital Environments: A Scoping Review.

Eating disorders encompass a spectrum of mental health conditions that are characterised by a preoccupation with eating, exercise, body weight or shape. The trajectory of eating disorders can result in hospitalisation for medical complications, such as electrolyte imbalance, extremely low weight and other medical issues that require urgent inpatient attention. Typically, care for adolescents with medically compromised eating disorders occurs in general medical settings, with most care provided by nurses who may or may not have the training and experience to provide quality care for this complex mental health condition.

Background And Objective: Scoping reviews are a type of evidence synthesis that aims to identify and map the breadth of evidence available on a particular topic, field, concept, or issue, within or across a defined context or contexts. Scoping reviews can contribute to clinical practice guideline development, policy making, reduce research waste by eliminating duplication of research effort, and be a precursor to a systematic review or inform further primary research. This article aims to provide a brief introduction of how to conduct and report scoping reviews.

Quantification and interpretation of nitric oxide-dependent cutaneous vasodilation during local heating.

Human cutaneous microdialysis approaches for assessing nitric oxide (NO)-dependent blood flow include local heating (LH) of the skin until a plateau is reached, followed by infusion of a NO synthase inhibitor such as -nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME); however, varied methods of quantifying and expressing NO-dependent vasodilation can obfuscate data interpretation and reproducibility. We retrospectively assessed NO-dependent vasodilation during LH to 39°C or 42°C, calculated as the ) absolute contribution of the NO-dependent component (along with baseline and the non-NO-dependent component) to the total cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) response to LH, normalized to maximal CVC (%CVC); ) difference in %CVC (Δ%CVC) between the LH plateau and post-NO synthase inhibition (l-NAME plateau; Δ%CVC = LH plateau - l-NAME plateau); ) percentage of the LH plateau attributable to Δ%CVC (%plateau = Δ%CVC/LH plateau × 100); and ) %plateau when correcting for baseline. The LH plateaus during 39°C and 42°C were 48 ± 17%CVC (9 ± 5% baseline; 2 ± 4% non-NO dependent; 36 ± 15% NO dependent) and 88 ± 10%CVC (15 ± 8% baseline; 9 ± 10% non-NO dependent; 64 ± 13% NO dependent), respectively.

Exploratory functional and quality of life outcomes with daily consumption of the ketone ester bis-octanoyl (R)-1,3-butanediol in healthy older adults: a randomized, parallel arm, double-blind, placebo-controlled study.

Background: Ketone bodies are metabolites produced during fasting or on a ketogenic diet that have pleiotropic effects on the inflammatory and metabolic aging pathways underpinning frailty in models. Ketone esters (KEs) are compounds that induce hyperketonemia without dietary changes and that may impact physical and cognitive function in young adults. The functional effects of KEs have not been studied in older adults.

Type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, and autoimmune thyroiditis autoantibodies in population-based type 2 diabetes patients.

Aims: The study aims were to determine autoantibodies associated with type 1 diabetes (T1D), celiac disease (CD) and autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) in individuals living with type 2 diabetes (T2D) compared to T1D and matched controls.

Methods: Individuals with T1D and T2D were randomly identified in health-care registers. Blood was collected through home-capillary sampling and autoantibodies associated with either T1D against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADA), insulin (IAA), insulinoma antigen-2 (IA-2A), and zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8A), CD against tissue transglutaminase (tTGA) or AITD against thyroid peroxidase (TPOA) were determined in an automated, multiplex Antibody Detection by Agglutination-PCR (ADAP) assay.

A reference genome, mitochondrial genome and associated transcriptomes for the critically endangered swift parrot ( ).

The swift parrot ( ) is a Critically Endangered migratory parrot that breeds in Tasmania and winters on the Australian mainland. Here we provide a reference genome assembly for the swift parrot. We sequence PacBio HiFi reads to create a high-quality reference assembly and identify a complete mitochondrial sequence.

Human outbreaks of a novel reassortant Oropouche virus in the Brazilian Amazon region.

The Brazilian western Amazon is experiencing its largest laboratory-confirmed Oropouche virus (OROV) outbreak, with more than 6,300 reported cases between 2022 and 2024. In this study, we sequenced and analyzed 382 OROV genomes from human samples collected in Amazonas, Acre, Rondônia and Roraima states, between August 2022 and February 2024, to uncover the origin and genetic evolution of OROV in the current outbreak. Genomic analyses revealed that the upsurge of OROV cases in the Brazilian Amazon coincides with spread of a novel reassortant lineage containing the M segment of viruses detected in the eastern Amazon region (2009-2018) and the L and S segments of viruses detected in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador (2008-2021).
