Complex plasma mixtures with three or more components are often encountered in astrophysics or in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. For mixtures containing species with large differences in atomic number Z, the modeling needs to consider at the same time the kinetic theory for low-Z elements combined with the theory of strongly coupled plasma for high-Z elements, as well as all the intermediate situations that can appear in multicomponent systems. For such cases, we study the pair distribution functions, self-diffusions, mutual diffusion, and viscosity for ternary mixtures at extreme conditions.

Background: Exposure mixtures frequently occur in data across many domains, particularly in the fields of environmental and nutritional epidemiology. Various strategies have arisen to answer questions about exposure mixtures, including methods such as weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression that estimate a joint effect of the mixture components.

Several metals have carcinogenic properties, but their associations with breast cancer are not established. We studied cadmium, a metalloestrogen, and 9 other metals-arsenic, cobalt, chromium, copper, mercury, molybdenum, lead, tin, and vanadium--in relation to young-onset breast cancer (diagnosis age <50 years), which tends to be more aggressive than and have a different risk profile from later-onset disease. Recent metal exposure was measured by assessing element concentrations, via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, in toenail clippings of 1,217 disease-discordant sister pairs in the US-based Sister (2003-2009) and Two Sister (2008-2010) studies.

Addition of the aluminum(I) reagent [{(ArNCMe)CH}Al] (Ar = 2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl) to a series of cyclic and acyclic 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,5-dienes is reported. In the case of 1,3-dienes, the reaction occurs by a pericyclic reaction mechanism, specifically a cheletropic cycloaddition, to form aluminocyclopentene-containing products. This mechanism has been examined by stereochemical experiments and DFT calculations.

-Methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA) boronates are boronic acid derivatives which are stable to reduction, oxidation and transmetalation. This has led to their widespread use as boronic acid protecting groups (PGs) and in iterative cross-couplings. Household air pollution (HAP) is of public health concern with ~3 billion people worldwide (including >15 million in the US) exposed. HAP from coal use is a human lung carcinogen, yet the epidemiological evidence on carcinogenicity of HAP from biomass use, primarily wood, is not conclusive. To robustly assess biomass's carcinogenic potential, prospective studies of individuals experiencing a variety of HAP exposures are needed.

A simple, one-pot procedure is reported for the selective defluoroalkylation of trifluoromethyl alkene derivatives with aldehydes and ketones. The reaction sequence allows construction of a new C-C bond in a highly selective manner from a single sp C-F bond of a CF group in the presence of sp C-F bonds. The scope incorporates industrially relevant fluorocarbons including HFO-1234yf and HFO-1234ze.

While it is well-established that physical activity is associated with a decreased risk of breast cancer, most studies have been conducted in populations at an average underlying breast cancer risk. In this issue of , Kehm and colleagues present compelling evidence that adulthood physical activity is beneficial across the risk spectrum, including among women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. These findings are significant because women who are at a higher baseline risk are not engaging in sufficient physical activity to meet current guidelines but may be more motivated to do so knowing that they, like women in the general population, may benefit.

With increasing interest in the potential utility of metallo-supramolecular architectures for applications as diverse as catalysis and drug delivery, the ability to develop more complex assemblies is keenly sought after. Despite this, symmetrical ligands have been utilised almost exclusively to simplify the self-assembly process as without a significant driving foa mixture of isomeric products will be obtained. Although a small number of unsymmetrical ligands have been shown to serendipitously form well-defined metallo-supramolecular assemblies, a more systematic study could provide generally applicable information to assist in the design of lower symmetry architectures.

The reactions of a series of β-diketiminate stabilised aluminium dihydrides with ruthenium bis(phosphine), palladium bis(phosphine) and palladium cyclopentadienyl complexes is reported. In the case of ruthenium, alane coordination occurs with no evidence for hydrogen loss resulting in the formation of ruthenium complexes with a pseudo-octahedral geometry and -relation of phosphine ligands. These new ruthenium complexes have been characterised by multinuclear and variable temperature NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction.

We report the design, preparation and characterisation of three small-molecule, Formyl Peptide Receptor (FPR)-targeted lanthanide complexes (Tb·14, Eu·14 and Gd·14). Long-lived, metal-based emission was observed from the terbium complex (τH2O = 1.9 ms), whereas only negligible lanthanide signals were detected in the europium analogue.

We present the formulation, simulations, and results for multicomponent mutual diffusion coefficients in the warm, dense matter regime. While binary mixtures have received considerable attention for mass transport, far fewer studies have addressed ternary and more complex systems. We therefore explicitly examine ternary systems utilizing the Maxwell-Stefan formulation that relates diffusion to gradients in the chemical potential.
