Purpose: To investigate performance of the Months of the Year Backwards (MOTYB) test in older hospitalised patients with delirium, dementia, and no cognitive impairment.

Methods: Secondary analysis of data from a case-control study of 149 hospitalised patients aged ≥ 65 years with delirium [with or without dementia (N = 50)], dementia [without delirium (N = 46)], and no cognitive impairment (N = 53). A novel, tablet-based application (app) has been developed to act as a screening tool for visual impairment in stroke survivors; The Stroke Vision app. The app includes assessments for visual acuity, visual fields and visuospatial neglect, as well as novel tools for the education of patients, carers and staff. The app has been devised by experts in the field to address two important deficiencies; firstly a set of visual assessment tools to support and improve evaluation and rehabilitation of visual impairments in stroke survivors, and secondly to provide education for staff and information to carers about their relatives visual disabilities.

The next generation of medical technology applications for hand-held portable platforms will provide a core change in performance and sophistication, transforming the way health care professionals interact with patients. This advance is particularly apparent in the delivery of cognitive patient assessments, where smartphones and tablet computers are being used to assess complex neurological conditions to provide objective, accurate and reproducible test results. Objectives: To evaluate how an intervention, which combined hand washing promotion aimed at 5-year-olds with provision of free soap, affected illnesses among the children and their families and children's school absenteeism.

Methods: We monitored illnesses, including diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections (ARIs), school absences and soap consumption for 41 weeks in 70 low-income communities in Mumbai, India (35 communities per arm).

Results: Outcomes from 847 intervention households (containing 847 5-year-olds and 4863 subjects in total) and 833 control households (containing 833 5-year-olds and 4812 subjects) were modelled using negative binomial regression.

Airway epithelial cells are a susceptible site for injury by ambient air toxicants such as naphthalene that undergo P450-dependent metabolic activation. The metabolism of naphthalene in Clara cells to reactive intermediates that bind covalently to proteins correlates with cell toxicity. Although several proteins adducted by reactive naphthalene metabolites were identified in microsomal incubations, new methods that maintain the structural integrity of the lung are needed to examine protein targets.

Because differentiating Clara cells of neonatal rabbits are injured at lower doses by the cytochrome P-450-activated cytotoxicant 4-ipomeanol than are those of adults, the impact of early injury on the bronchiolar epithelial organization of adults was defined by treating neonates (3-21 days) and examining them at 4-6 wk.
