Objectives: We evaluated a novel leave-behind naloxone (LBN) program that allows Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel to distribute naloxone after an opioid overdose. Our objective was to explore EMS engagement and experiences with the program, as well as interest in education on addiction and harm reduction. We also assessed the acceptability of LBN programs among people who use drugs (PWUD).

This study sought to define principles for ethical application of educational POCUS and develop consensus-based best practice guidance.
Methods: A questionnaire was developed by a trained ethicist after literature review with the help of a medical librarian.
The important hypothesis that organic livestock management reduces the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance is either fiercely supported or bitterly contested. Yet, empirical evidence supporting this view remains fragmentary, in part because relationships between antimicrobial use and drug resistance vary dramatically across contexts, hosts, pathogens, and country-specific regulations. Here, we synthesize global policies and definitions of 'organic' and ask if organic farming results in notable reductions in the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance when directly examined alongside conventional analogs.

This was a pilot program to initiate and evaluate EPT through medication-in-hand ("take-home") kits or paper prescriptions. In this study we aimed to assess the frequency of EPT prescribing, the efficacy of a randomized best practice advisory (BPA) on the uptake, perceptions of emergency clinicians regarding the EPT pilot, and factors associated with EPT prescribing.

Consequently, a major focus of emergency medical services (EMS) systems and prehospital medicine has been improving the time until medical intervention in these time-sensitive emergencies, often by reducing the time required to deliver critical medical supplies to the scene of the emergency. Medical indications for using unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, are rapidly expanding, including the delivery of time-sensitive medical supplies.

Aim: An Initial Specimen Diversion Device®, Steripath® (Magnolia Medical Technologies, Seattle, WA, USA) was evaluated for efficacy in reducing blood culture contamination at Brooke Army Medical Center (6.8% six-month contamination rate prior to intervention) in a six-month quality improvement project.
Background: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections caused by Streptococcus agalactiae is a leading cause of meningitis and sepsis in neonates, with early-onset GBS symptoms emerging during the first week of life and late-onset occurring thereafter. Perinatal transmission of GBS to the neonate through the birth canal is the main factor associated with early-onset neonate infections, while less is understood about the source of late-onset infections.
Methods: In this report we describe a case of twin ex-premature infants who presented one month after birth with GBS septicemia.
Background: Stool is a promising specimen option to diagnose pediatric tuberculosis (TB), but studies have reported a wide range of test sensitivities. We conducted a meta-analysis to assess the accuracy of Xpert MTB/RIF or 'in-house' molecular tests on stool samples against culture or Xpert MTB/RIF on respiratory samples or clinically-diagnosed unconfirmed TB and aimed to identify factors that contribute to the heterogeneity of reported sensitivity.
Methods: We searched EMBASE and Pubmed databases and conference abstract books for studies reporting molecular stool testing against a clinical or microbiological reference standard among children.
In 2017, a mumps outbreak occurred in a barrack holding 249 service members. Suspected cases were evaluated with a combination of mumps IgG, IgM, viral culture, PCR and sequencing. Seven cases were diagnosed in febrile patients presenting with parotitis or orchitis.

In this study, we investigated the mechanism of action of the third-generation benzopyran compounds, TRX-E-002-1 and TRX-E-009-1. High-content screening of a panel of 240 cancer cell lines treated with TRX-E-009-1 demonstrated it has broad anti-cancer potential.

Methods: We present a case report of a 29-year-old male with a nodule on the right lower back, which was surgically excised and submitted to pathology as a ruptured epidermoid cyst.
Results: Histopathologic sections revealed detached soft tissue fragments containing polymorphic granulomas with abscess and suspicious-appearing spherical structures ranging in size from 50 to 200 μm.
Background And Aim: Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is implicated in tumor progression. We aimed to determine if the renin angiotensin system has a role in colorectal cancer (CRC) cell EMT.
Methods: Human CRC cell lines DLD-1 and LIM2405 were used in wound scratch migration assays where they were treated with renin angiotensin system peptide ANG II alone or with blockers of ANG II type 1 or 2 receptors (AT1R and AT2R).
Iron homeostasis is tightly regulated by the membrane iron exporter ferroportin and its regulatory peptide hormone hepcidin. The hepcidin/ferroportin axis is considered a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of diseases of iron overload or deficiency. Here, we conducted a chemical screen in zebrafish to identify small molecules that decrease ferroportin protein levels.

Methods: Orthotopic murine breast tumors (4T1 and E0771 with high and low MMP14 expression, respectively; n = 5-10 per group) were treated with an anti-MMP14 inhibitory antibody (DX-2400), IgG control, fractionated radiation therapy, or their combination. We assessed primary tumor growth, transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, macrophage phenotype, and vascular parameters.
Partial hepatectomy (PH), the preferred option for selected patients with colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM), is associated with 40-80% tumor recurrence rates. Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockade inhibits tumor growth and has been suggested to improve liver regeneration. We documented the effect of RAS blockade on tumor growth and liver regeneration in a murine model.

Here we determine the role of vascular endothelial protein tyrosine phosphatase (VE-PTP), which deactivates endothelial cell (EC) Tie-2 receptor tyrosine kinase, thereby impairing maturation of tumor vessels.
Methods: AKB-9778 is a first-in-class VE-PTP inhibitor.
Kupffer cells (KCs) are resident liver macrophages that play a crucial role in liver homeostasis and in the pathogenesis of liver disease. Evidence suggests KCs have both stimulatory and inhibitory functions during tumor development but the extent of these functions remains to be defined. Using KC depletion studies in an orthotopic murine model of colorectal cancer (CRC) liver metastases we demonstrated the bimodal role of KCs in determining tumor growth.

This study investigated the effects of RAS blockade on liver macrophages (Kupffer cells; KCs) in an orthotopic murine model of colorectal cancer (CRC) liver metastases. Here we showed that pharmacological targeting of the RAS [ANG II (31.

Although extracranial disease is controlled with HER2 inhibitors in the majority of patients, brain metastases often develop. Because these brain metastases do not respond to therapy, they are frequently the reason for treatment failure.

In hospitals and in the community at large, this organism is increasingly identified as a pathogen. To develop a diagnostic test that combines the strengths of immunoassays (cost) and DNA amplification assays (sensitivity/specificity), we targeted a genetically stable PaLoc region, amplifying tcdB sequences and detecting them by hybridization capture.
