Early-Life Resource Scarcity in Mice Does Not Alter Adult Corticosterone or Preovulatory Luteinizing Hormone Surge Responses to Acute Psychosocial Stress.

Early-life stressors can affect reproductive development and change responses to adult stress. We tested if resource scarcity in the form of limited bedding and nesting (LBN) from postnatal days (PND) 4 to 11 delayed sexual maturation in male and female mice and/or altered the response to an acute, layered, psychosocial stress (ALPS) in adulthood. Contrary to the hypotheses, age and mass at puberty were unaffected by the present application of LBN.

One health in the Philippines: A review and situational analysis.

The Philippines faces a complex and interconnected web of human, animal, and environmental health issues, including zoonotic and reverse zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food insecurity and contamination, and threats from environmental degradation. This paper examines these issues, existing interventions, and their implementation challenges. The overall framework used to analyze the level of operationalization of the One Health approach is the Multi-sectoral One Health Coordination Framework developed by the World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, and the World Organization for Animal Health.

The incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer in the UK and the Republic of Ireland: a systematic review.

Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) remain the most prevalent malignancies, contributing a higher workload to cancer registries than all cancers combined. The nature of skin cancers in addition to current coding methods employed by registries give a skewed representation of the workload.

Objectives: A comprehensive search examining the incidence of BCC and/or cSCC at a regional or national level in the UK and Ireland was devised.

Prenatal Androgen Treatment Does Not Alter the Firing Activity of Hypothalamic Arcuate Kisspeptin Neurons in Female Mice.

Neuroendocrine control of reproduction is disrupted in many individuals with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), who present with increased luteinizing hormone (LH), and presumably gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), release frequency, and high androgen levels. Prenatal androgenization (PNA) recapitulates these phenotypes in primates and rodents. Female offspring of mice injected with dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on gestational days 16-18 exhibit disrupted estrous cyclicity, increased LH and testosterone, and increased GnRH neuron firing rate as adults.

Analysis and physicochemical properties of cellulose nanowhiskers from Pennisetum purpureum via different acid hydrolysis reaction time.

Cellulose nanowhisker (NWC) was extracted by hydrolysing Pennisetum purpureum (PP) fibres with acid and alkali. They were subjected to different periods of acid hydrolysis; 30, 45, and 60 min. NWC morphology and physicochemical properties were characterised by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), particle size analyser, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis.

Fasciotomy for chronic exertional compartment syndrome of the leg: clinical outcome in a large retrospective cohort.

Background: Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) is an overuse disorder typically affecting an athletic population. CECS is a diagnosis based on history and intracompartmental pressure (ICP) testing. CECS patients can be treated surgically by fasciotomy; however, research on the relationship between ICP and patient symptoms and also between ICP and patient-reported outcome post-fasciotomy is limited.

Predictive Modeling for West Nile Virus and Mosquito Surveillance in Lubbock, Texas.

West Nile virus (WNV) was first detected in North America during 1999, and has since spread throughout the contiguous USA. West Nile virus causes West Nile fever and the more severe West Nile neuroinvasive disease. As part of a WNV vector surveillance program, we collected mosquitoes in Lubbock, Texas, using CO-baited encephalitic vector survey (EVS) traps.

Molecular detection of Oxyspirura larvae in arthropod intermediate hosts.

To determine potential intermediate hosts of Oxyspirura petrowi, a common nematode eyeworm of wild gallinaceous birds, various arthropod species including red harvester ants, beetles, wood cockroaches, crickets, grasshoppers, katydids, and desert termites were screened for the presence of O. petrowi using specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers targeting the internal transcribed spacer 2 region (ITS2) of the eyeworm ribosomal deoxyribonucleic acid (rDNA). This is the first study to investigate the intermediate hosts of O.

In vitro degradation of a 3D porous Pennisetum purpureum/PLA biocomposite scaffold.

The in vitro degradation and mechanical properties of a 3D porous Pennisetum purpureum (PP)/polylactic acid (PLA)-based scaffold were investigated. In this study, composite scaffolds with PP to PLA ratios of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% were immersed in a PBS solution at 37°C for 40 days. Compression tests were conducted to evaluate the compressive strength and modulus of the scaffolds, according to ASTM F451-95.

Preliminary disease surveillance in west Texas quail (galliformes: odontophoridae) populations.

Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata) occur throughout northwestern Texas and overall population numbers have been declining for the past 30 yr. This decline has been attributed to habitat loss associated with intensive agricultural practices. We propose that disease may be a contributing factor to decline.

Asymmetric synthesis of cis-2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidine, the core scaffold of β3-AR agonists.

A practical, enantioselective synthesis of cis-2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidine is described. Application of an enzymatic DKR reduction of a keto ester, which is easily accessed through a novel intramolecular N→C benzoyl migration, yields syn-1,2-amino alcohol in >99% ee and >99:1 dr. Subsequent hydrogenation of cyclic imine affords the cis-pyrrolidine in high diastereoselectivity.

Analysis of migration of press-fit porous-coated acetabular components with medial lucencies using Ein-Bild-Roentegen-Analyse.

A total of 136 patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty (154 hips) with press-fit acetabular components were evaluated for the presence of medial radiographic lucencies. Thirty patients (22.1%) demonstrated radiolucencies greater than 1 mm in zone 2 on initial postoperative films.

Two sibs with anophthalmia and pulmonary hypoplasia (the Matthew-Wood syndrome).

We describe two sibs with pulmonary hypoplasia and anophthalmia; one also had a number of other malformations. Only one other broadly similar case could be found in the literature, and it was an isolated occurrence. The condition is named the Matthew-Wood syndrome.

Long-term prognosis of displaced Colles' fracture: a 10-year prospective review.

In all, 85 per cent of Colles' fractures are clinically satisfactory after 10 years. Clinical results improve little after 3 months. Displaced intraarticular fracture, wrist deformity and algodystrophy are associated with an unsatisfactory outcome.

Assessment of a contact-plate sampling technique and subsequent quantitative bacterial studies in atopic dermatitis.

The aerobic bacterial flora of 20 patients with atopic dermatitis and 19 control subjects was extensively sampled using the Williamson and Kligman scrub technique and a contact-plate method (cysteine lactose electrolyte deficient media). Comparison of the two quantitative techniques showed that the contact plate is a reliable and convenient alternative to the scrub technique for the quantification of Staphylococcus aureus, micrococci and coagulase negative staphylococci. Quantification of bacterial flora using both techniques showed high rates of colonization by S.

The fixation and prognosis of trochanteric fractures. A randomized prospective controlled trial.

A randomized prospective controlled trial of 155 patients with trochanteric fractures compared the AO dynamic hip screw and the Jewett nail plate. The dynamic hip screw showed significantly less evidence of mechanical failure and a lower incidence of reoperation. The implant had no effect on mortality or success of rehabilitation.

Oedeme bleu: a reappraisal.

The case-histories of four patients with self-induced lymphoedema show a distinctive organic syndrome, but the underlying mental mechanisms in these patients show no common thread other than an apparent wish to draw attention to an untreatable condition. A policy of non-intervention may reduce or limit the eventual disability.
