The search for gold-standard materials for bone regeneration is still a challenge in reconstruction surgery. The ratio between hydroxyapatite (HAp) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) in biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics (BCPs) is one of the most important factors in osteoinduction promotion and controlled biodegradability, configurating what is currently considered as a possible gold standard material for bone substitution in reconstructive surgery. Exploring the natural genesis of the HAp and β-TCP phases in fishbones during their postnatal growth, this study developed a biphasic bioceramic obtained from the calcination of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) bones as a function of their ages.

Initiation of PINK1- and PRKN-dependent mitophagy is a highly regulated process involving the activity of the AAA-ATPase VCP/p97, a cofactor-guided multifunctional protein central to handling ubiquitinated client proteins. Removal of ubiquitinated substrates such as the mitofusin MFN2 from the outer mitochondrial membrane by VCP is critical for PRKN accumulation on mitochondria, which drives mitophagy. Here we characterize the role of the UBA and UBX-domain containing VCP cofactor UBXN1/SAKS1 during mitophagy.

Objective: To evaluate the early stages of the setting process of chemically activated restorative glass-ionomer cements (GICs).

Material And Methods: Five GICs were evaluated ( = 5): Equia Forte (GC), Equia Forte HT (GC), Ketac Universal (3M ESPE), Maxxion R (FGM) and Riva Self Cure (SDI) by Thermography, Fourier Transform Infrared Attenuated Total Reflectance Spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and Gillmore needle indentation mechanical testing. The FTIR-ATR spectra showed the formation of metal carboxylates within the cements and enabled the stabilization time (ST) to be determined and the thermographic camera measured the temperature field images in the sample.

Sanguinarine is a natural isoquinoline alkaloid derived from the root of Sanguinaria canadensis and from other poppy fumaria species, and is known to have a broad spectrum of pharmacological properties. Here we have found that sanguinarine, at low micromolar concentrations, showed a remarkably rapid killing activity against human melanoma cells. Time-lapse videomicroscopy showed rapid morphological changes compatible with an apoptotic cell death, which was further supported by biochemical markers, including caspase activation, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage and DNA breakdown.

Colchicine site ligands with indole B rings are potent tubulin polymerization inhibitors. Structural modifications at the indole 3-position of 1-methyl-5-indolyl-based isocombretastatins (1,1-diarylethenes) and phenstatins endowed them with anchors for further derivatization and resulted in highly potent compounds. The substituted derivatives displayed potent cytotoxicity against several human cancer cell lines due to tubulin inhibition, as shown by cell cycle analysis, confocal microscopy, and tubulin polymerization inhibitory activity studies and promoted cell killing mediated by caspase-3 activation.

In this paper, a broad combined orange-red emission from Eu²⁺- and Eu³⁺-doped low-silica calcium aluminosilicate (LSCAS) glass is reported. Spectroscopic results demonstrate that it is possible to tune the emission wavelength by changing the excitation wavelength in the UV-Vis region. The color coordinates for the emission spectra were calculated, and using the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage 1931 and 1976 chromatic diagrams, it is possible to note that they are dependent on the excitation wavelength.

In this paper we report results of tunable lighting in Ce(3+)/Eu(2+,3+) doped low silica calcium aluminosilicate glass. Optical spectroscopy experiments indicate that there is a red color compensation from Eu(2+) and Eu(3+) to the green emission from Ce(3+), resulting in a broad and tunable emission spectra depending on the excitation wavelength. This result analysed in the CIE 1976 color diagram shows a close distance from the Plank emission and a correlated color temperature, varying from 5200 to 3500K.
