Article Synopsis
  • This paper presents a new method for measuring deformations in geomaterials using innovative 'Smart Pebble' sensors incorporated into triaxial test specimens of stabilized unbound aggregates with geogrids.
  • Smart Pebbles use a particle tracking algorithm that effectively handles uncertainties due to signal noise, allowing accurate monitoring of the specimen's response to applied stress.
  • The study demonstrates that Smart Pebbles can effectively capture resilient deformations and provide reliable data on local stiffness enhancements, validating their role in assessing geomaterial behavior under repeated loading conditions.

In the present study, Brassica napus, a food plant, was grown for phytoextraction of selected heavy metals (HMs) from marble industry wastewater (WW) under oxalic acid (OA) amendment. The hydroponic experiment was performed under different combination of WW with OA in complete randomized design. Photosynthetic pigments and growth reduction were observed in plants treated with WW alone amendments.

This study not only provides an innovative technique for producing rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) composites, but it also offers a way to reuse metallurgical solid waste. Rigid polyurethane (RPUF) composite samples have been prepared with different proportions of iron slag as additives, with a range of 0-25% mass by weight. The process of grinding iron slag microparticles into iron slag nanoparticles powder was accomplished with the use of a high-energy ball mill.

Introduction: Primary Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a rare subtype of urothelial carcinoma and has an unknown incidence and prevalence in Yemen. Radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) with bladder cuff removal is the standard treatment for UTUC.

Case Presentation: We present a 67-year-old male patient who developed grade II vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) on the left side of the urinary tract after undergoing right-sided RNU for non-invasive UTUC.

Ovarian granulosa cell tumors (GCTs) are rare neoplasms with a unique incidence pattern peaking in postmenopausal women. This case report presents two instances of stage 4 recurrent adult GCTs with a prolonged 20-year follow-up. Patient 1, diagnosed at 54 years, experienced multiple recurrences managed through surgery, hormonal therapy, and chemotherapy, culminating in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Majority of the existing SARS-CoV-2 vaccines work by presenting the whole pathogen in the attenuated form to immune system to invoke an immune response. On the other hand, the concept of a peptide based vaccine (PBV) is based on the identification and chemical synthesis of only immunodominant peptides known as T-cell epitopes (TCEs) to induce a specific immune response against a particular pathogen. However PBVs have received less attention despite holding huge untapped potential for boosting vaccine safety and immunogenicity.

  • Dicrocoelium lancet flukes significantly affect livestock production, and co-infections with multiple species are common, but research methods for studying these complexes are limited.
  • This study applied a new metabarcoding deep amplicon sequencing technique to investigate four Dicrocoelium species in sheep and goats, confirming their co-existence and differentiation at the molecular level.
  • The analysis identified that 98% of the flukes were D. dendriticum, indicating a predominance of this species in specific regions of Pakistan, along with insights into genetic relationships among the Dicrocoelium species.

Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in vehicles represent a significant problem, causing unpleasant odors. To mitigate VOCs and odors in vehicles, it is critical to choose interior parts with low odor and VOC emissions. However, prevailing odor evaluation methods are subjective, costly, and potentially harmful to the health of evaluators.

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is an underdiagnosed form of infiltrative cardiomyopathy caused by abnormal amyloid fibrils deposited extracellularly in the myocardium and cardiac structures. There can be high variability in its clinical manifestations, and diagnosing CA requires expertise and often thorough evaluation; as such, the diagnosis of CA can be challenging and is often delayed. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) to different diagnostic modalities is rapidly expanding and transforming cardiovascular medicine.

Background: In agricultural pest management, especially in combatting the invasive red imported fire ant (RIFA, Solenopsis invicta), significant challenges emerge as a consequence of the constraints of solely depending on chemical insecticides or entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). The utilization of chemical insecticides carries environmental and ecological hazards, whereas EPNs, when applied independently, might not offer the immediate effectiveness necessary for adequate RIFA suppression. Acknowledging these hurdles, our study investigates a synergistic method that integrates EPNs with chemical insecticides, aiming to fulfill the urgent demand for more efficient and environmentally friendly pest control solutions.
