We report on an x-ray absorption and resonant photoemission study on single crystals of the high-T(c) cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-delta). Using an intrinsic energy reference, we find that the chemical potential of La2-xSrxCuO4 lies near the top of the La2CuO4 valence band whereas in Nd(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4-delta) it is situated near the bottom of the Nd2CuO4 conduction band. The data clearly establish that the introduction of Ce in Nd2CuO4 results in electrons being doped into the CuO2 planes.

Their critical dynamics is well described by the conventional dipolar Heisenberg model. These correlations involve small magnetic moments.

The orbital ordering above 77 K is not destroyed at the magnetic ordering temperature of 116 K, but is present as far as a second structural phase transition at 200 K. The transition between orbital orderings is caused by an increase in octahedral tilting with decreasing temperature.

This is true both above and below the superconducting transition and in the presence of doping and band formation. This provides direct support for the existence and stability of Zhang-Rice singlets in high-temperature superconductors, justifying the ansatz of single-band models.

We argue that this feature does not arise from static freezing of the U-spin magnetization, but is due to coupling between 29Si spins and a hidden order parameter. We discuss time-reversal symmetry-breaking orbital antiferromagnetism and indirect nuclear spin-spin interactions as possible coupling mechanisms.

Two distinct and isotropic Knight shifts have been found for the field in the basal plane. While the volume fractions associated with the two Knight shifts are approximately equal at low and high temperatures, they show a dramatic and opposite temperature dependence around T(N).

The different spectroscopic signatures of the insulating (paramagnetic) and metallic (ferromagnetic) phases enable their spatial extent to be imaged down to a lateral scale of the order of 10 nanometers.
