Owing to its specialised methodology, palaeoecology is often regarded as a separate field from ecology, even though it is essential for understanding long-term ecological processes that have shaped the ecosystems that ecologists study and manage. Despite advances in ecological modelling, sample dating, and proxy-based reconstructions facilitating direct comparison of palaeoecological data with neo-ecological data, most of the scientific knowledge derived from palaeoecological studies remains siloed. We surveyed a group of palaeo-researchers with experience in crossing the divide between palaeoecology and neo-ecology, to develop Ten Simple Rules for publishing your palaeoecological research in non-palaeo journals.

Article Synopsis
  • Climate change often leads to habitat shifts for species towards the poles, but other factors also play a significant role in determining species distribution.
  • A study on European forest plants shows that they are more likely to shift westward rather than northward, with westward movements being 2.6 times more common.
  • These shifts are primarily driven by nitrogen deposition and recovery from past pollution, indicating that biodiversity changes are influenced by multiple environmental factors, not just climate change alone.

1,4-Diazepane-6-amine (DAZA) can be alkylated with three 2-hydroxybenzyl pendant arms, resulting in hexadentate chelators suitable for coordination of radiometals like Ga. These chelators, ,1,4-tri(alkoxy-2-hydroxybenzyl)-DAZA, can be produced via a one-pot synthesis, with the first step being a carbonyl amine condensation of DAZA with two respective 4-alkoxy-2-hydroxybenzaldehydes, followed by reductive amination with sodium borohydride. While the first step of this reaction is predictable, the subsequent reductive amination can result in either mono-, di- or tri(alkoxy-hydroxybenzyl)-DAZA compounds.

Heart Failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) has a high rate of sudden cardiac death (SCD) and empirical treatment is ineffective. We developed a novel preclinical model of metabolic HFpEF that presents with stress-induced ventricular tachycardia (VT). Mechanistically, we discovered arrhythmogenic changes in intracellular Ca handling distinct from the changes pathognomonic for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.

Objectives: The risk of Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) under hybrid immunity remains unclear.

Methods: Using data from the German National Cohort (NAKO Gesundheitsstudie), we investigated risk factors for self-reported post-infection symptoms (any PCC is defined as having at least one symptom, and high symptom burden PCC as having nine or more symptoms).

Results: Sixty percent of 109,707 participants reported at least one previous SARS-CoV-2 infection; 35% reported having had any symptoms 4-12 months after infection; among them 23% reported nine or more symptoms.

Introduction: Family history of depression and childhood maltreatment are established risk factors for depression. However, how these factors are interrelated and jointly influence depression risk is not well understood. The present study investigated (i) if childhood maltreatment is associated with a family history of depression (ii) if family history and childhood maltreatment are associated with increased lifetime and current depression, and whether both factors interact beyond their main effects, and (iii) if family history affects lifetime and current depression via childhood maltreatment.

Background: To date, several chest drainage systems are available, such as digital drainage systems (DDS) and traditional systems with continuous suction or water seal. However, none of these systems were yet shown to be favorable in the treatment of complex situations such as persistent air leaks or residual spaces. We present in-vitro as well as clinical data of a novel hybrid drainage system consisting of an optimized digital drainage system (ODDS) and an underwater seal drainage system (UWSD).

Radionuclide cisternography (RNC) is a method for conducting imaging of the cerebrospinal system and can be used to identify cerebrospinal fluid leaks. So far, RNC has commonly employed radiopharmaceutical agents suitable only for single-photon emission tomography techniques, which are thus lacking in terms of image resolution and can potentially lead to false-negative results. Therefore, [Cu]Cu-DOTA was investigated as an alternative radiopharmaceutical for RNC, employing positron emission tomography (PET) instead of single-photon emission tomography.

Heart Failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is the most prevalent form of heart failure worldwide and its significant mortality is associated with a high rate of sudden cardiac death (SCD; 30% - 40%). Chronic metabolic stress is an important driver of HFpEF, and clinical data show metabolic stress as a significant risk factor for ventricular arrhythmias in HFpEF patients. The mechanisms of SCD and ventricular arrhythmia in HFpEF remain critically understudied and empirical treatment is ineffective.
