Background: Exposure to solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation significantly accelerates skin aging by inducing the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) such as MMP-1, leading to alterations in the extracellular matrix and consequent photoaging. Some plant components, renowned for their UV-absorbing and antioxidative properties, show potential for mitigating photoaging by reducing UV-B-induced MMP levels. In this context, we explored the inhibitory effects of Clerodendrum trichotomum extract (CTE) on UV-B-induced skin damage.

III-V quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as significant alternatives to Cd- and Pb-based QDs, garnering notable attention over the past two decades. However, the understanding of III-V QDs, particularly in the short wave-infrared (SWIR) region, remains limited. InAs QDs are widely recognized as the most prominent SWIR QDs, but their absorption beyond 1400 nm presents various challenges.

BACKGROUNDPemphigus, a rare autoimmune bullous disease mediated by antidesmoglein autoantibodies, can be controlled with systemic medication like rituximab and high-dose systemic corticosteroids combined with immunosuppressants. However, some patients continue to experience chronically recurrent blisters in a specific area and require long-term maintenance systemic therapy.METHODSSkin with chronic blisters was obtained from patients with pemphigus.

Autoimmune bullous diseases (AIBDs) are a group of life-threatening blistering diseases caused by autoantibodies that target proteins in the skin and mucosa. Autoantibodies are the most important mediator in the pathogenesis of AIBDs, and various immune mechanisms contribute to the production of these pathogenic autoantibodies. Recently, significant progress has been made in understanding how CD4 T cells drive autoantibody production in these diseases.

In total, four new eudesmane-type sesquiterpene glycosides, askoseosides A-D (-), and 18 known compounds (-) were isolated from the flowers of via chromatographic techniques. Chemical structures of the isolated compounds were identified by spectroscopic/spectrometric methods, including NMR and HRESIMS, and the absolute configuration of the new compounds ( and ) was performed by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) studies. Further, the anticancer activities of the isolated compounds (-) were evaluated using the epidermal growth factor (EGF)-induced as well as the 12--tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA)-induced cell transformation assay.

  • Phlomis umbrosa (P. umbrosa) is a traditional herbal medicine used to help with inflammatory diseases, including asthma.
  • In a study, scientists tested how a P. umbrosa extract (PUE) worked on mice with asthma caused by a substance called ovalbumin (OVA).
  • The results showed that PUE helped reduce symptoms like inflammation and mucus in the lungs, suggesting it could be a helpful treatment for allergic asthma.

The implementation of the Nagoya Protocol highlighted the importance of identifying alternative herbal products that are as effective as traditional medicine. and , two species used in the Korean medicine 'Sok-dan', are used for the treatment of bone- and arthritis-related diseases, and they are often mixed or misused. To identify herbal resources with similar efficacy, we compared the effects of extract (DAE) and extract (PUE) on osteoarthritis (OA) in a monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced OA rat model.

Yijin-tang is an oriental traditional herb used to treat inflammatory diseases. In the present study, we investigated the protective effects of Yijin-tang water extract (YTE) using an ovalbumin- (OVA-) induced asthma model, focusing on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the herb. BALB/c mice were intraperitoneally injected with OVA on days 0 and 14 and then challenged with OVA on days 21, 22, and 23.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on a perennial plant, (Gaertn.) DC, which is commonly used in oriental medicine and is typically grown from rootstock, leading to challenges like root rot and low productivity.
  • The research aimed to identify differences in characteristics among standard rootstock seedlings (SR), culture rootstock seedlings (CR), and culture seedlings (CS) under field conditions, noting that SR had poorer flowering and smaller leaves compared to CR and CS.
  • Analysis revealed that the fresh and dry weights of CR and CS were significantly higher than SR, while chemical constituents, particularly catalpol, showed slight differences, indicating that using culture products could help improve mass production of this plant.

  • - The study investigates the therapeutic effects of Scrophularia buergeriana ethanol extract (SBE) on airway inflammation in asthma models using OVA-induced mice and LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells.
  • - Results showed that SBE reduced inflammatory responses, including the expression of key interleukins (IL-5, IL-13, IL-17) and airway hyperresponsiveness, while also decreasing histological signs of inflammation and mucus production.
  • - The findings suggest that SBE may have potential as a treatment for allergic asthma by inhibiting pathways like NF-κB phosphorylation that contribute to inflammation.
